Well I guess Joel is dead!

...but not in the cool "he's a Battlestar Galactica hallucination" way like I hoped

Everything I had seen before this made TLoU2 look to be relentlessly cynical, wallowing in misery to prove It Should Be Taken Seriously, so I am not really surprised by any of the leaks. It is the product of jaundiced minds

Like I don't think the kind of story they want to tell, in general, is completely off limits.

The issue is that Funny Games is focused and less than two hours, it's not something that's 20 hours of combat arenas with sick execution animations interspersed with box-pushing puzzles

Yeah I am not ready to jump whole hog into literary critique of the details without the whole picture of the story beyond broad outlines, there has been some confirmation of odious thematic elements but those were obvious from the first reveal trailer.

I am totally here for the corporate drama and hope we learn more about what mismanagement went on, if this was at its core a worker retaliation incident like the rumors are saying

the relative value of optimistic/pessimistic media aside, going by those spoilers i still wouldn't give credit for tlou2 for any kind of grander artistic merit even if it is relentlessly grim, no more than i would for something like outlast 2

at least the first game had something to say about the human condition even if it wasn't breaking any new ground, this one's just using the studio's clout to dial up its r-rated imagery as far as it can go

The latter point is what really bugs me about Naughty Dog's approach, it's like they consider abstraction or remove to be a limitation rather than a tool that can be used to center psychology or existential dread. Instead they have chosen "realistic ultraviolence" to signal Serious Intent and regardless of theme I don't really get much out of that

Telephone spoiler summaries are always gonna be extremely suspect, and doing a switch to Abby is so drastic that I feel like it kind of has to be done fairly well.

What I mean is, this game has had a lot of time, oversight, and a hefty legacy to live up to. If people haven't been playing and giving the feedback "yes, I like this story" then I feel like it would have been changed.

This isn't an indie studio that can afford to say "gently caress you, this is our ~vision~", if they haven't extensively tested this poo poo out then that'd be an uncharacteristically big whoopsie.

Hell, Uncharted 4 sounds dumb as gently caress on paper: Nate has a brother and a nemesis he's conveniently never mentioned at all and now he's back and you're expected to care about him (and even play as him briefly)

Amy Hennig's version would have been better.

Seems like there's a common denominator between the projects

from joels perspective they are going to find a cure from ellie and he is acting purely out of self interest, and not only that he is doing it because of his own cowardice in continuing to take her to them for what he knew was going to happen. then compounded on him massacring everyone in there, he refuses to even take a possible step towards any sort of redemption in his character by just lying to ellie when she already knew the truth and just wanted him to say it. he sucks and its good he dies in 2 regardless of anything else.

This is why I have been a firm believer in the "Joel is Dead" theory since the reveal trailer (I was never joking about this) and the earlier he dies in LoU2 the better

The actual physical violence affects me less than the realistic reactions that accompany it. Like with Tomb Raider the actual stabbing or bludgeoning is less traumatizing than the amount of detail they put into depicting the reaction of fear and panic and then the life draining from her eyes, and the camera like lingers on that. Same with Last of Us, where their "special" execution animations feature the person thrashing or begging for their life before they get domed

Yeah the Mad Max movies are absolutely more successful in building compelling emotional experiences through their action than The Last of Us (and from what we've seen, Last of Us 2)

I can't think of a single thing TLoU did that was a positive innovation on shooter gameplay.

Harry Potter is a touchstone entry into reading for a generation and has become a part of culture and it's a mediocre written children's book with some grimdark to make it seem more mature.

A significant part of the critical establishment in cinema recognizes the Academy Awards as pure politics and celebrity worship, which is why indie and art cinema are recognized as spaces with clearer artistic voices

Harry Potter is rightfully mocked as garbage literature now mostly known for "wizards poo poo themselves" and "liberals applying this book to every political context."

My read on LOU's ending was that Ellie is not dumb and knew exactly what happened, but wanted to give Joel a chance to talk about it. With his lie, he declined, and they both end up not talking about it.

LOU2 looks like it will probably use GhostJoel to hash out the things they never actually talked about
