The earliest extant version of the Fall of Gondolin include descriptions of things that sound an awful lot like tanks. I believe it was literally written in the trenches of WWI. I can't point to specific sources, but I recall reading somewhere that in some of his papers the Numenoreans at their height had ironclad warships and guns and poo poo like that, which is why they could whup Sauron at the height of his power in the Second Age.
