They're called fishermen because they use a weapon/tool that works by manipulating something at the end of a string. So basically the answer is it's actually less metaphorical than you were thinking.

e: Also it's less tank than "melee / midrange DPS." There isn't really a tank role among the five described.

The roles are called that, IIRC, because those were approximately the roles Jahad and the 13 Family Heads held in their original climb up the tower, and over time I suppose the lines got a little more muddled.

Yeah, Fishermen traditionally use a fishing rod as one of their weapons. Though we don't see as many Fishermen actually using them as you might expect.

You are right mostly. To give a little more in depth

and i'll tag it to be careful

seriously don't read this next one if you want 0 spoilers

When Jahad and crew climbed the tower they did not fight people. They fought the magical fish in tests comprised by the administrators. (Supreme magical fish like the one bam spoke to when making the contract.) The roles reflect that sort of battle rather than versus people. So for example likely they had to do tests like that which Headon made Bam face in the first floor.

tanks only make sense when aggro exists. without some enforced targeting priority, no one is going to aim for the tank over their squishy friends. so, even for the people who can take hits they have to be able to do more than that.

Is there anyone in multiple classes? There seems to be a lot of overlap between scout and light bearer.

Scout and Light Bearer, despite both involving gathering intel, are exact opposites in their battlefield positions. Scout is the most forward, risk taking role (out past the front lines, in enemy lines) whereas the Light Bearer sits back and surveys, examines, and supports their team from their own back lines.

Bam is night in Korean and Yoru is night in Japanese. His name is literally Twenty-Fifth Night.

Why don't they call him Night in English translations? I have no idea. Maybe they just thought it sounded a bit too silly.

Ah that makes sense, thematically appropriate too. I did notice in the Japanese VA list it does refer to him as 25th Bam

What were the rules again for this new test? I assume the lead up to it with Bam making friends with everyone will lead to him finding a way to have everyone pass, rather than just one side.

The rules are simple. Each team (1 ranker vs half the regulars) has an IT.

Regulars IT needs to escape (100k points) out of one of two exits without being caught by the ranker IT, or Capture the Ranker ITs badge (200k points)

Ranker can only use Shinsu once in this fight but that matters very little because they are still a Ranker.

Is the ranker on Bam's team side? I'm confused as to why he's there trying to capture the other team's "it" by himself?

Is it just taking place in two rounds, with half of the people who haven't passed against the ranker each round? That's what it seems like from how it was portrayed, but if that's so there's no reason both teams can't pass.

Yes, each team will fight the ranker.

They don't explain it in the episode and so

There are a limited number of positions that can advance from here. and its decided by points.

They are scoring it. Even if both teams beat the ranked that would just mean individual ratings would break the tie.

Yeah I want to give Rachel the benefit of the doubt but she's super duper not very appealing at the moment.

Feed Bam a bunch of lines about friendship and being there for others and then peaces out to go to the Tower.

When Bam does the unthinkable and follows her into the murderdeathtower decides she needs to :sever: because friendship makes you weak.

Like even if Bam does turn out to be some unholy monstrosity that she was trying to keep under control after he lost his memory, she's just kinda a jerk about it to be honest.

Endorsi is kinda growing on me which is pretty impressive given I normally hate "bratty princess" archetypes. She's straddling that line between amusing and annoying impressively.

King of Jahad sounds like he's kind of an rear end in a top hat but I guess we'll wait to see since he'll undoubtedly be central to this story as The Only Person To Clear.

I presume they skipped over it or I've forgotten but the whole dealio is that they're all getting points for classes/clearing tests/etc but they spend points every time they need food or medical care or whatever? I guess that makes a bit more sense as to "injuries are your own responsibility", though it seems real rough for someone like the Fishermen who you would think would get injured in the course of training more often then say, a Lightbearer.

Tower of God is meticulous about explaining and justifying why characters behave the way they do, to the point where it's arguably the series' single greatest strength. It adds a lot of depth to what would otherwise be pretty well-worn tropes (like our amnesiac protagonist).

Ah, that explains why Baam's fellow wave controller was getting so upset about Baam surpassing him.

Since we're at the point now where singular people can fail, rather than whole teams of 3. What happens to a team if one team member fails? Does the whole team fail?

It's been a long time but I think individuals pass and the team no longer really matters in the rules. If your teammate fails and you pass then you get to go on. The 3-person team was arbitrarily decided in the rules of the test floor, but as we have seen the test floor isn't really that standard (Quant's area vs Leroro's area, for example)

During the scene with Khun, Bam, Hatsu and Leesoo you have Khun and Leesoo fighting over earrings and harakiri and at the time Khun brings up that Hatsu and Leesoo were Anaak's teammates and Hatsu says they aren't teammates anymore.

This scene seemed cut down a lot in the anime so I think some of this might have been glossed over. Just like the positions and how a certain number will pass from each position. So at the moment everyone is not in a three person team anymore.

The two big teams victory may play an important part in who passes, but each person is individually scored so even if a team wins that doesn't guarantee someone on the team might not fail, or if a team fails a person on the team may still pass. That said the team passing or failing is a big swing in the scores.

The initial deathmatch is a bit out of place, yeah. It feels like the author shifted his concept of the setting somewhat since then. Obviously the lives of Tower Regulars are still built around brutal competition, but I don't think it's ever taken to quite that extreme again.

Once you culled everyone you don't have to do much more culling. At this point the idea is that everyone who survived those opening tests are worth spending the time on training and evaluating before sending them up.

Seems like if you just wanted to reduce the numbers, the pass the water wall test would have been just fine. Probably better as you don't risk someone qualified getting killed.

I couldn;t handly being a week behind on Crunchyroll Free, so I went ahead and read the webcomic. There's a lot of it, so I'm still not finished, but it's interesting knowing who to watch out for in the animation etc. when they first show up, and who's just a background extra.

Despite all this, I'm still terrible with names, so unless they get said extra-often like Anaak I'm still thinking of them as 'Tracksuit' and 'Sleepy'

Speaking of Tracksuit, impressions from before reading ahead. While he's the comedy butt of a lot of jokes, it's interesting to see his big talk somewhat paying off. He may not have super-deadly kung-fu, but he can hold his own in the Crown Game against people who aren't fight-obsessed idiots. And he legitimately solved the timer puzzle, rather than getting lucky. If he didn't make two of the group's most antisocial swordfighters his team of three, and so have to spend his time doing PR damage control, he'd look a lot better.

Yeah I never had a problem with the battle royale at the start even now. While the true goal of the test is to weed out/identify potential dangers to Jahad's power, it does also give Regulars a good taste and idea of what they'll need to both survive and move up the Tower.
