Is it just because it's a poor man in a small town in a backwater state? Is it because that a white man being killed by white police in a majority white state doesn't really have a racial component to it and therefore isn't as newsworthy?

The following footage is :nms: and :nws:. I've watched it with a nurse and a paramedic, both people who know people in the department involved, and their opinion is that even though the victim has drugs in his system, his death was a direct result of how the police positioned him.

because the police brutalize the gently caress out of the poor, particularly minorities. white people can never fathom themselves being poor or a minority. to them, it isn't "the police are preying on our community" it is "some bad person got what they deserved".

I don’t know the answer to your question but I can tell you that solving the problem of police brutalizing minorities — mostly black people — will solve the problem of police brutalizing white people. I would not bank that solving police brutality for white people would benefit blacks people though.

That said, my opinion is that one is a drop in the bucket in an ocean of racial injustice, and the other is a power trip. One gets coverage because a minority group is getting victimized with no justice so they speak out, and the other gets glossed over because at the end of the day, I’m white and the status quo is built for me.

If nothing else the incident I linked is almost a control case. No racial issues present and the police still kill a man through incompetence and malice.

Is it as simple as "Jackson County gonna Jackson County" and people move on with their day?

Yes.

This is inflamed because the media narrative is always directed towards how responsible the victim was for their own death, and how complicit our communities, by name, are critiqued against white American stereotypes for our cultures and races.

And let's be honest, the typical response from someone who would be best positioned to be empathetic in that case (poor, white, rural, limited education) is cheering when Trump tells police officers to rough up detainees. The event doesn't fit the narrative their social networks are interested in amplifying, so it will go nowhere.

a) white people haven't been systematically oppressed for centuries, so white people aren't as collectively outraged when they're the victims of police brutality
b) even so, this absolutely should have garnered a response. the fact that there wasn't has no bearing on the response to the murder of George Floyd

Well, for one, I suspect it's not as huge news because, as much as the cops escalated and hosed it up and used unsafe positioning, when he goes pukes and then goes limp, they check his responsiveness, roll him, realize it's VERY BAD, and start attempting mediocre first aid. That's a far cry from calmly sitting there with knee on neck for minutes after the guy has gone limp and refusing to render any aid until EMTs show up.

Second, maybe sincewhite people haven't been systematically abused and killed by cops as often, they're more likely to assume the best of cops.

:lmao: I needed to laugh, thank you.

So I've been ignoring news until the past few days for the sake of my sanity AND NOW find myself kind of needing to pay attention. Madison WI saw its own protests that went south last night, and most of State St. is super hosed. Over 75 shops trashed.

It's okay though, we used to have yearly riots on Halloween just 'cause and bounced back just fine from those.

Anyway, I realize like half the people here hate Dems and whatever but consider donating to this guy who is going up against McConnell:

Or just throw money at various charities that are on the ground helping protesters. Here is a handy list of resources: https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/

Hope everyone's doing okay.

Sorry, I phrased that wrong.

Dunking on the guy because he likes a dumb children's cartoon show seems to me like a much smaller problem than the fact that he tried to stab a bunch of people with a sword.

We give ICP fans and Furries a pass because they got on board with anti-facism. the same should apply to equine cartoon fetishists, or whatever weird poo poo he's into between consenting adults.

gently caress this guy because he's a bootlicker who was willing to murder to protect property. Piling on his dumb nerdy fanfic hobby should not be done, even if it is slightly hypocritical, because that makes us the hypocrites, and alienates potential allies.

The Right spent the last 70 years sewing together a big tent of racists, sexists, militarists, greedy sociopaths, and religious fanatics to get them in the position they are today. The left must take a similar approach.

There's all sorts of resources if you google for a couple minutes. A lot of them overlap, and some of them probably aren't as useful here, but it seems like employing some of these strategies would help keep them from getting dispersed by the police so easily.

By and large the protests are at their core peaceful. They're not expecting to walk into raining tear gas and walls of rubber flying at them. I'm sure if the organizers planned to become more confrontational they would suit up but even right now there's a lot of black protesters arguing with antifa-wannabe turds to stop trying to escalate.
