The "reopen everything" freaks were always going to have to confront the idea that people just will not loving go to these businesses no matter how much they shriek, and further federal assistance will be necessary. Whatever big crowds they get on the first day are not going to be sustainable.

Once again the rhetoric paid for by right wing PACs fails to withstand reality

R0 is just based on observed positive tests, right? So our lack of testing would contribute to a lower R0, as would any positive impact of social distancing, masks, and shutdowns?

I think it's a number based on mathematical models using the observed characteristics of the disease and how the infection works, not real world testing data. It would be impossible to determine an actual R0 from our state case data because it would be so variable.

For example, if they used Colorado's data from the last month the R0 would be <1.

Eh, it's not for the public. It's for scientists who can get some use out of "If you model a human as a frictionless sphere in a vacuum, and he has a 10% chance of contracting it, a 5% chance of being asymptomatic, and a 7% chance of spreading a week in..." and so on.

Yep, this is why I never really post about my job. The most insane, violent right wing rhetoric is a-ok on Facebook but associating with mild leftism is risky. I’ve had a guy on internal chat threaten to report me as a security clearance risk because I suggested that cops should act like heroes if they wanted to be treated like them (after one of those shootings of an unarmed person), and that was the last I ever chatted on there.

It is 100% not a given that developing a nuclear bomb was a required step along the way to exploiting nuclear power. A society not on a wartime footing might have gone straight to energy production/resiliency.

Kind of like how renewable energy adoption might have gone a lot differently in the US if not for very non-technological reasons related to keeping the correct people rich.

Government/university partnerships in basic research and civil applications are already a thing so it's not unimaginable to think of expanding the resources in those programs instead of funneling everything through the DoD (which also does university partnerships).

hi, i work in computers and webs and study their history. the DOD almost entirely stopped funding fruitful basic research in our field when ARPA became DARPA. it's good for governments to conduct research, and not good to manage the funding and evaluate the results of such research as part of "Defense."

i also think it's pretty defeatist to think that say, we were only ever going to get nuclear power through nuclear warfare or national space programs as testbeds and PR campaigns for ICBM strategies, even if it's obvious that's what happened.

It's not really defeatist it's like "this is how it happened therefore this is how it must happen" which is probably something on the massive list of cognitive biases. The balance of investment through the DoD is obviously something we can change in the future if we at least recognize that warfare is just a way to stimulate research, not the way.
