If Detroit could turn the Lamelo ball pick into Kyle Lowry that would be cool. They seem 99% committed to a steady rebuild with some good vets around developmental young guys and wildcard high ceiling low floor guys, so I doubt it.

Also Kyle is really small and those small pgs don't always age well. But big butt small point guards are sort of an exception. Can you guys think of some big butt PGs who played well until 33 or 34?

it'll decimate their bench depth but if the wizards are willing to move beal and the nets aren't just leaking their christmas list then it'd probably make the most sense for both sides; it's better than what the lakers can offer (kuzma + picks way far down the line + filler) and i don't know that the wizards would want a package that the celtics could put together (hayward (who might opt out) + picks)

the real sticking point is that leonsis is TOO loving STUPID TO REBUILD so we'll see

e: the more i look at it the more i like the nets trade for the wizards; they could immediately move joe harris to a contender for more ~assets~ and they'd have a promising young big they can play with rui

Is Beal best friends with Kyrie, KD, and Deandre Jordan? I don't know why he'd want to go from first option/second option to third or tied for fourth. Just standing there while Kyrie and KD run pnrs and long stretches of ISOs.

In an ideal Nets world, everyone is healthy and they can roll out great shooting and good playmaking from those 3 guys. They could probably win a lot of games, would have a hard time against elite beefy wings, Lebron, Kawhi, etc. They'd match up badly with Boston, better against Miami, again would have no one to put on Siakim. (Assuming that KD is never the defender he once was)

It feels like the Joe Tsai Nets were cannily fleeced by other teams and agents, and possibly will be again, in a manner similar to how they were fleeced under Prokhorov. The only thing we learn from the past is that we never learn from the past.

Tourny could have a loser bracket to figure out seeding or just seed teams that got knocked out in the same round based on their regular season standings.

How about a 66 team tournament with ACB, BBL, ABL, PBA teams. Single elimination. I have an athletic 30 day free trial, and drat do they have some nice writing. It's like I'm 10 years in the past when there was still sportswriting on the internet rather than terrible video clips of 6 hour long react- shows.

About the Toronto Raptors' preferences when drafting a Man to play Ball:

quote:

Vecenie: Between this and our undying love of pop-punk music, our relationship has been on firm ground for years, and I’m glad we’re actually getting a chance to talk about first-rounders instead of late-round flyers!

As you mentioned, the Raptors have been immensely successful at getting contributions from young players. It speaks not only to their talent identification — which is excellent and always has been — but also to their strong organizational culture and development-driven mindset. Masai Ujiri and Bobby Webster are two of the smartest people working in basketball, period, and they know what they’re looking for in how to make a prospect fit within their scheme. To me, the Raptors and the Heat are the best examples of why drafting for organizational fit as opposed to taking a “best player available” approach is so essential.

You ask about what “a Raptors prospect” looks like. I think, first and foremost, they find guys who are great teammates and have unselfish mindsets but are also incredibly driven with insatiable work ethics. All of the players you mentioned above, that’s the absolute No. 1 thing that stands out. Some of those guys are a bit more talkative when it comes to personality; some of them are extraordinarily quiet. But they all have a deep internal drive and want to keep getting better.

From a physical standpoint, the Raptors tend to look for guys with plus positional athleticism and plus positional length mixed with a well-developed frame that carries weight and strength well. One of my theories of draft evaluation over the past few years has been that teams drastically undervalue guys with true physical strength for their position. The Raptors seem to agree with such an evaluation given whom they have prioritized not only in the undrafted free agency market but also within the draft.

I will also note that the Raptors tend to value older prospects more than most. Siakam was 22 when they drafted him. Powell was 22. Wright was 23. Poeltl turned 21 before his first NBA season. Davis and VanVleet were four-year college players. Really, only Anunoby was on the younger side, and he perfectly fit everything else the organization looks for due to his elite-level physical tools, his frame and his mentality.

Honestly, few organizations do better than Toronto in the draft. The Raptors are very smart. I’ve tried to take some of what they look for and incorporate it into my own analysis, and they’re one of the few organizations I would say that about.

Murphy: That sounds like a pretty great rundown of what the Raptors are about in the draft. The one thing I would add, which isn’t something they look for necessarily but are willing to accept: A track record of strong shooting is not a prerequisite. Powell, Anunoby and Wright all had questions about their range, Siakam was a complete non-shooter and even Davis wasn’t believed to be a sure thing to translate that skill (which is bizarre given how well he “vaults up,” as Nick Nurse is fond of saying).

The Raptors seem to believe — and evidence suggests they’re correct — they can turn anyone not named Rondae Hollis-Jefferson into at least a passable shooter. Given the premium on shooting around the league, it stands to reason that devaluing shooting to a small degree allows you to value other, less teachable traits more highly. There might be sample-size and repeatability concerns with such an approach, but it’s worked so far.

So if we’re making a checklist, we’ve got work ethic, length, positional strength and athleticism — basically all the components of “defensive versatility” — with age and shooting less of a concern than it is for most teams.

He has the highest ceiling of anyone in the draft but Zion. We all like Ja Morant, but he's slight, RJ Barret wishes he had anything close to the potential of MPJ, and Deandre Hunter tops out as a solid starting shooting specialist.

MPJ could lead the league in points, and play good defense while he was at it.

Has anyone run through the pool of guys eligible to be Covid-19 replacements and ranked them?

"If a player tests positive, they will need to quarantine for at least 10 days and have two negative tests before rejoining their team. The same is true if a player leaves the league’s Disney World campus, which will be closed off to the public. If a player leaves and returns, they will need to quarantine for at least 10 days and test negative twice before rejoining.

Teams are expected to have the option to replace players who test positive by signing available free agents or utilizing their own players on two-way contracts. The transaction window may open around June 22, as previously reported by ESPN. A decision on the pool of players able to be signed has not yet been finalized, but the current thinking is it would likely be limited to players who were on an NBA roster during training camp or during the season, or on a G League roster at any point. In other words, DeMarcus Cousins, who was signed by the Lakers last summer but waived in February, would be eligible to be signed, but J.R. Smith, waived last summer and unsigned throughout the season, would not be."
