Im one of those dumn nerds that just piles obsolete techjunk for years. As a result I have an old dell 21" monitor from my parents and an ancient faded 27" monitor attached to my teensy 13" work laptop with the 21 on a kvm with my personal laptop. Not like it really matters since my work laptop shits itself constantly because it gets used way harder than it should be.

Turns out I would need those HDMI>DVI DVI>VGA adapters afterall.

Yeah I had a couple of old laptops in the shed from ~2011 that came in handy when my eldest daughter had to start schoolwork WFH. I set her up on a clean Windows 7 install with nothing at all on it apart from her Chrome bookmarks. Some of the kids were doing it on an iPad, which I can't imagine was a lot of fun.

Tell me that isn't the perfect soundtrack for redlining a Countach down the PCH in a driving game.

Ulpio Minucci, who composed the theme and some of the BGM for Robotech, also scored The Day That Shook The World, a 1975 YugoCzechGerman film about the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand.

"found 83 gold coins at the bottom of the coal chute in a house while renovating"

French, renovating an old house, finds a small fortune in gold coins in the bottom of the coal chute, after people have paid him to take the ~4 tons of coal that was in there away. People have said they're worth around $400 each; Swiss 20 franc coins issued between 1897 and 1936. I assume the WWII-era owner dumped them in there and bugged out one step ahead of the nazis.

It's going to be in limbo for a while. There are treasure laws where there's a flow chart who gets the loot.

I've seen three episodes, because I was willing to give it two more tries in an effort to understand why the show had such an ardent, cult-like following. When I consulted a superfan and asked if the show was really anything more than a parade of men in massive shoulderpads and anime Ugg boots, talking about fighting when they're supposed to be fighting for 40% of the time, random blurry poo poo for actual fighting 5% of the time, and shaking and screaming for the remaining 50% of the series, I was told 'u just don't get it.'

Kinda sounds as though I did get it.

Itís basically a cartoon soap opera with an American idol type show in the middle and once in a while a giant robot fight break. Oh and like three romance subplots.

If you stick it out to the end you get a giant anime robot space battle while a pop idol sings a very anime ballad. The song is diagetic, so that shits happening in the universe of the show.

It also helps if youíre a giant battle tech nerd so you can laugh at all the robots that were borrowed/licensed/stolen. By BT to be clear.

Iím not going to defend it at all but Iíve watched the first one a few times.

Edit: oh and the English one is a mash up of like two different Japanese shows and then it gets crazier with that in later seasons so you can always get in a fun nerd argument about which one is the REAL show. Like, imagine if power rangers was actually two unrelated shows spliced together.

I'ma stop you right there. I've been through Battletech, nobody is capturing that lightning in another bottle. Second, I would resent anything that reminds me of the time I wasted in FFX-2, or, may have been a clear inspiration for the stupid tropes going on in that awful game.

Dragon Ball is good. It does sound like you donít get it, to be honest! Itís an adventure comedy with an emphasis on character relationships, set in a high fantasy world where characterís emotions are borne out as baroque, cataclysmic battles.

I could understand not being onboard if you never saw any of Dragon Ballís first series, though, because DBZ is the second series in a three-part work. A lot of the impact of that first arc of DBZ comes from following Goku as a supernatural orphan immigrant for a whole series, coming into his own as a hero, and then surprise: his family comes to town after decades of absence, and they suck poo poo, and they want to kick his rear end.

I have sat through Pokemon, Naruto and One Piece because my oldest kid really liked those shows when he was a bit younger. I have endured a lot of 'we are selling toys anime' other than Pokemon, like Yu-Gi-Oh, Bakugan, and Beyblade, because my youngest liked those shows.

I get tired pretty quickly with any show that has conflict management that leans way the gently caress into more talking than fighting, bullshit filler 'energy building' sequences that don't trick me into a false sense of tension, complicated bibble-babble pissing-match narrative punctuated by exaggerated character reactions that dictate to the viewer how to react also in case you were lost, and DBZ is the grandparent of that kind of show format.

It probably sounds like I must just dislike all anime, but that's not entirely true. I mostly liked Naruto, and I was cool with Pokemon because I felt that the shows encouraged more than anything in kids a sense of justice, fair play, and personal fortitude when dealing with other people's compromised bullshit. One Piece has a lot of great stuff going on, even if it will periodically dip deep into the crap I complained about. One Piece and Naruto are both at their worst with the battle-jabber- when a 10 year old kid idly says 'I wish they'd shut up and fight', yeah.
My son and I really like My Hero Academia, even if we both kinda acknowledge that it's just Naruto re-skinned in a superhero format.

I don't judge anyone for liking DBZ. But something doesn't have to be 'liked' to be understood.

Itís absolutely insane to me to enjoy Naruto and MHA but not Dragon Ball on the basis of not liking reaction shots that dictate how the audience should feel. Those shows are way worse with that, and spoonfeeding flashbacks that tell you what you should be relating current events back to for context, than Dragon Ball even at its worst.

Itís cool to like Naruto et al, theyíre mega hits for a reason, but I personally find them unwatchable for exactly the reason you bounced off DBZ, so thatís crazy to me.

I really enjoyed DBZ back when it was airing on Toonami right after school, and got pretty into it. I had a few shirts and action figures, and even bought a bootleg fansub of one of the movies on VHS. Thinking back, that was probably my first online purchase, which is weird to think about.

Then I moved and got more into skateboarding, punk music, weed, and girls.

I have found memories of it, and still remember a lot of the lore, but the nostalgia has never been strong enough for me to want to revisit it.

Car Bullshit -

Welp, I'm still having that alarm gremlin problem. My car is supposed to have a key fob, but doesn't. The two keys I got are Volvo branded, but one looks rough. The alarm keeps going off, at random, when the driver's side door is opened. It stops when the car is started.

The shop I took it to couldn't get the alarm to go off. I couldn't get it to happen when I picked it up. But the shop straight up told me, "We don't have the Volvo dealer diagnostic tools, so we aren't going to be able to give you a great answer about why that's happening." I wanted to just disconnect the alarm, but they were worried it could drain the battery.

Because I live in a condo filled with old people, I need to get this fixed. So I'm actually taking the car to a dealer on Tuesday. That's not something I've ever done. I asked the dealer if they could just disconnect the alarm. They said the same thing about possibly killing the battery if the alarm is silently going off all the time.

Right now, I'm into the car for $3k with another $1200 expected for the timing belt in the near future. As long as solving the alarm issue doesn't somehow involve replacing the transmission, I'm going to get out ahead on this. I had budgeted 3k for the car and 2k for maintenance/repairs out of the gate.

Please, Volvo Gods, let this alarm be an easy fix.

After I typed out that post about my Volvo, something managed to fly off the top of my desk that hasn't moved in over a year, tumble end over end, bounce off a small storage container on my desk, slam into my full thermos of coffee, and spray it all into my lap and onto my wireless keyboard.

It's going to be one of those day, isn't it?

If you want to just disable the alarm sound, #10 is the siren, looks like it should be pretty accessible

This thing has plenty of false alarm opportunities, glass break sensors, ultrasonic sensors, level sensors

However, I'm not seeing anything specific about the alarm system in the symptom based diagnosis or repair sections. The immobilizer/key rfid interface is still working fine, right? The removal/replacement section has some information on replacing the immobilizer, including replacing the ignition switch antenna ring so let me know if you want that.
