As I’m sure everyone is aware, the world is going through some pretty tough times right now. Coronavirus is impacting everything and economies are crumbling under the strain. There are a lot of people out of work, a lot of people about to go hungry. There are also a lot of people stuck at home. A lot of bored people stuck at home.

To keep it simple, I want to encourage people to stay safe, stay home, work on their backlogs, and support those in need. To that end, I will make donations for models or units completed before July 15th. I will also match any additional donations people want to make to their local food banks, homeless shelters, or similar programs. More on the specifics below.

Everyone is welcome to participate though this is obviously meant as a hobby-oriented thing. That’s not meant to be exclusionary and if you would like to do something creative in lieu of donating, please contact me and we may be able to figure something out.

All I am asking from each of you is to paint models. For each painted 28mm character, vehicle, or monster model I will donate $50 US to the Houston Food Bank. If you would rather paint regular units, I will donate $50 for every five (5) models painted. This is assuming models similar to Warhammer, Warmachine, Bolt Action, etc. For any oddly-sized units, such as cavalry or ogres, I’ve included more guidelines below. If you would like to paint models in a different scale I have included some examples, but if I’ve left your game out please contact me and we can come up with something.

Additionally, I will match every donation posted in this thread. However, I am but one man and, unfortunately, I have to set a limit. Between models and donation matching, I can commit up to $5,000 US. According to the Houston Food Bank’s numbers, this will help provide 15,000 meals. If anyone else would like to participate in donation matching or sponsoring more models, please contact me directly. You are encouraged to donate to the organization of your choice and your help will be greatly appreciated. Maybe we can turn this little project into a significant amount.

I want to be clear here: This is NOT a contest. This is not about finding the best painter. There will be no judging and every participant is welcome. This is about feeding folks.

Simply post your completed models in the thread with a timestamp from http://www.worldtimeserver.com/current_time_in_AS.aspx. For an example of what this looks like, please check out the Oath Thread. I want one image with a timestamp, but you may of course post additional pictures to show off your completed model(s) if you wish.

Donations are not mandatory, but they are certainly encouraged. If you make a donation, post a screenshot of your receipt for it to be counted. Please edit out any identifying information before doing so, however, and only donate if you can afford it. These are uncertain times so make sure you and yours are safe first. There’s no shame in that.

Alternatively, you can e-mail me and I will include your pictures in regular summary posts in the thread. Please give me a name/screen name to attach them to if you choose to go this route. Partly for tracking and partly so that you may be recognized for your accomplishments. If you would rather remain anonymous, that’s fine too. Just be sure to tell me.

Please donate to your local food bank, a homeless shelter, medical charity or something similar. All I ask is that they are focused on helping people through this crisis. I’ve provided a short list of examples in the Q&A section if you’re looking for ideas.

As an example, I will be donating directly to the Houston Food Bank. I have chosen them because I grew up there, I still have family and friends there, and it’s a city of 6 million about to be hit hard by a combination of the coronavirus lockdown and a lot of layoffs. They also have a very good rating and every dollar donated can be stretched to effectively $6 through their local partnerships. This in turn lets them buy three meals for every dollar donated. I am currently far from home with no way back for the foreseeable future so I want to do what I can for my hometown while I’m lucky enough to still have a job and few expenses.

However, I do not want to dictate that everyone donate to my organization of choice. It feels crass to ask people from around the US and even the world to support one city just because I’m from there. This is a broad community and there are a lot of places that are feeling the pain right now. Donate where you think appropriate.

In addition to posting in the thread, you can PM me here on Something Awful. I have also set up a dedicated e-mail address at Hams4Hunger at gmail.com. Please feel free to use it if you don’t have PMs or would just rather shoot me a regular e-mail.

This is also open to non-goons so please feel free to share this e-mail with your friends. I will include their models and donations in any summaries.

I am part of a few goon Discords, including the main SA one, so if you can track me down there please feel free to message me directly. I don’t use it much, but I will try to be more active/available during this. I’d rather not post a direct link to my account here, but I use the same screen name so I should be easy to find.

I don’t do Twitter, I don’t do Facebook, and I don’t do Reddit. I’m honestly not good at the whole promotional aspect of all of this, but I’ll be trying to work with some people to get the word out. If new contact options become available I will add them to this section.

One last thing: I’m in a weird time zone right now so I may not respond immediately. Don’t worry. If it’s urgent and I’m not online, the best option is to e-mail me as I can’t access SA, Discord, etc. easily from work.

Q: Why are you doing this?
A: Beyond the obvious, goons are generally good folks and I think having a focal point like this could lead to some great results.

Q: What is the goal?
A: To raise money for food banks, homeless shelters, medical charities, and similar programs.

Q: Is this a gofundme or something? Are you collecting money?
A: No, I very specifically do NOT want your money. I do not want to be responsible for a larger fund and I certainly do not want to deal with any of the drama that would generate.

Please handle your own donations and post proof to have them counted and recognized. If you would like to remain anonymous, PM or e-mail them to me and let me know.

Q: Where should I donate?
A: Donate directly to a program or charity of your choice. All I ask is that they work towards helping people during this crisis in some way. Here some general ideas:
COVID-19 Solidarity Fund - https://covid19responsefund.org/
CDC Foundation - https://give4cdcf.org/?utm_source=CDCF&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=combat-coronavirus
Direct Relief - https://www.directrelief.org/emergency/coronavirus-outbreak/
Feeding America - https://www.feedingamerica.org/
Meals on Wheels - https://www.mealsonwheelsamerica.org/
Trussell Trust - https://www.trusselltrust.org/
Local food banks/homeless shelters/etc. - you can find these on google pretty easily

Q: What should I paint?
A: All models are welcome, there will be no restrictions here since that’s not really the point. The choice is entirely your own.

Q: What qualifies?
A: Anything! But to be more specific, this is what I’m looking for:
These models will earn a $50 donation from yours truly:
One (1) 28mm character, monster, or vehicle
Five (5) standard infantry, team members, gangers, etc. Normal models, essentially.
    Three (3) cavalry or equivalents
Three (3) larger infantry or smaller monsters, such as ogres, trolls, space marine centurions, etc.
If these seem lenient, it’s because I genuinely want to spend my money, help me do that. Please see the Categories section for more details and alternative options.

Q: I don’t want to paint 28mm, I would rather work on Adeptus Titanicus/Epic/Flames of War/Dropzone Commander/Etc. What will qualify?
A: I have included a few more examples in the Categories section. If your game is not covered, let me know about it.

Q: Is there a limit to how much I can paint?
A: Nope.

Q: Is basing required?
A: No. Basing is certainly encouraged, but I understand that people may not be able to have access to their usual supplies or custom bases so I’ll be lenient on this one.

Q: Do you require a bare/primed picture in addition to the final painted one?
A: No. Feel free to do so, but it is not required and only the final timestamped pictures will be counted. I know a lot of people have half-painted models sitting around and this project is about getting those things done.

Q: I would like to match donations. How can I participate?
A: Contact me directly and we can work something out. For example, if you would like to match donations you can commit to matching the next immediate donations up to your limit. Or we can split incoming donations until you reach your limit.

Q: I would like to support additional models. How can I participate?
If you would like to sponsor additional types of models we can set up a new category. Maybe you’d like to see some super-heavies, for example, or a bonus bounty for monsters or models from a specific system. Please contact me before posting anything, however. It’ll be easier if I can manage the announcements myself and keep things relatively organized.

Q: I don’t play tabletop games, don’t build models, and don’t paint. What can I do?
A: Donate to your local food bank and post about it. If you’re able to. It is not my intent to exclude RPG, CCG, or board game folks, I just don’t understand those communities or games enough to know of an equivalent to the relatively simple accomplishment of painting models. I am open to suggestions, however.

Q: I don’t have a Something Awful account and/or I am too scared to post. What should I do?
A: Just. Post.
Alternatively, e-mail me at Hams4Hunger at gmail.com and I will post for you.

Q: When does this start?
A: There is no official start date so please feel free to begin as soon as you read this post.

Q: When does this end?
A: Tentatively, July 15th at 11:59pm in American Samoa. This took a little longer than I wanted to set up so I've extended it a bit. I want to give people plenty of time, but I also recognize that food banks probably need donations sooner rather than later. I am flexible though and if this is successful and people continue to participate, this deadline may be extended as needed.

However, as this is a longer schedule than I’d like, I will donate in chunks as we hit $1000, $2000, etc.

Q: Why not just donate the money and shut up about all of this?
A: I could do that (and I will if this doesn’t pan out), but I thought this might be a nice opportunity to get the broader community here involved. If we can get other folks matching donations we may be able to get to a much more significant total. At the very least, this might give someone sitting at home a vague sense of purpose as they work on their backlog.

Q: How do we know you’re serious about this?
A: There’s no good way to prove that on the internet, but to show I am doing this in good faith I have already donated $1000. This will not count against the total, but I hope it shows that I am committed to this.

Pretty simple, just a list of regular donations. Remember that I will be matching these in my contributions to the Houston Food Bank. Sorry, not anymore.

And here's my receipt(s) as proof I'm being honest:

This is for the call-outs.

This section is for anyone that wants to challenge a specific painter. Maybe one of your friends has a titan stashed in a box somewhere and you want to give them a bit of a nudge to get it done. Maybe you know someone’s recently bought a character model you’d like to see painted up. Or maybe one of your buddies is notoriously slow and you think some motivation might help.

Demand for this sort of thing was almost immediate. I’ll keep the list above updated as more come in. Feel free to pile on to any existing challenges.

This list is to track any sponsors in this thread. Essentially, sponsors sign up to fulfill my role for a bit. They can offer to match donations or cover models. For example, a sponsor may want to see more super-heavies and can offer an additional bounty on them. Maybe they want to see more 40k or Bolt Action or just models of any kind. This is a pretty flexible category.

Normally, these will be in addition to my standard donations. If all you want to do is offer a $5-$10 incentive on your game of choice, that’s fine. Set your own limits here.

It genuinely seems like I might hit my limit before the end of all of this so while this category isn't important yet, it'll play a bigger role later.

I don't know much about Malifaux, but I'll take a look and come up with something. The core boxes seem to be 5-6 models so it may just be $50 for the set to keep it simple.

I started this conversion... probably at least eight years ago? But never got around to actually painting it because I fell out Warhammer 40k almost overnight when the new (at the time) Tyranids codex was relaunched and it became clear that, at the time, no force without "Space Marine" in the name was ever intended to be able to win a fight against a force that did.

I never really played chaos, but the new plastic terminator lord had just come out and I was inspired by the yelly little jerk, so I picked one up. I was never good at painting marines, so I know this is barely tabletop quality, but I just finished it tonight and I hope it's passable enough to qualify.

I'm going to try to finish up the rest of the conversion too (assuming I can find the drummer's arm), so I can hit that five model minimum.
