Like it's very pleasing to hear some metalhead going on an anti-Bieber screed or something because it's one of the most obvious ways to mine whatever insecurities they harbor. In this case usually they're mad that normal people listen to music they don't and thus their taste won't receive the recognition they think it should.

I couldn't name a Bieber song off the top of my head but I like the guy just for that. It's fantastic, just great. I hope Miley Cyrus pisses more people off by doing innocuous things that shouldn't make any reasonable person angry but somehow does in spades. God bless America.

I like miley
because
when they asked her what "the jay-z song" was in "party in the u.s.a." she was like "??? it's not a true story. i don't write the songs"

and then
years later
she was covering "nothing compares 2 u" at a concert and she didn't know the words, so she looked them up on her phone
sat on stage reading the lyrics off her phone

it don't matter to her lol

I learned these things because people were mad at her

the monkees didn't even play their own instruments
everybody get mad
everybody get mad

now we have ed sheeran
he plays the instrument. thank gently caress. thank gently caress we have this lame buttwad with a guitar doing weird bad songs on radio stations I don't listen to
did we need shakira to pick up a guitar? and justin timberlake? and fred durst? I guess it made them more "real", because lord knows that's what people come to shakira for.
these millionaires somehow found the time to learn three chords. incredible. that's "talent" and "real music", a white dad decided while frothing in rage at disco 40 years ago

even justin bieber will worm his way into writing credits on his songs by improvising a "yeah yeah" or a "whoa"
he's a song writer, you guys!

miley couldn't be bothered

"miley, you must work really hard and pour your heart into your music, right?"
"I'm the achy breaky heart guy's daughter. they gave me a tv show when I was 11."
... god drat you to hell

learn the words beforehand you little trollop!!!!! your spontaneous decision to sing a song you like for your fans is only authentic if it has been carefully rehearsed!

and yet, she doesn't take up the "villain role" in pop culture
that thing where somebody is elevated and their importance artificially inflated as a negative example, like bieb or kanye or the kardashians or the president. people don't watch them because they like them, they watch them because they're such bitches (and in kanye's case because he really is a phenomenally great producer, I KNOW, you don't have to tell me)
she denies you that
she's not a "bad girl", she really just shook her tiny flat rear end because she wanted to

she's just completely uninterested in providing comforting illusions of authenticity
what could be more authentic than that?

Dixville posted:

my favorite thing about taylor swift is that she accidentally created a really strong, amusing illustration of the importance of prosody

because the lyric "got a long list of ex-lovers" in the song "blank space" has a really clunky stress structure in natural speech (got-a-LONG-LIST-of-EX-LO-vers)
so to make it fit with the melody of the song, she put the emphasis on the wrong syllables (GOT-a-LONG-list-OF-ex-LO-vers)

and tons of people misheard it, because the brain automatically associates words with their normal speaking rhythm and vice versa, so it searches for something that fits that emphasis pattern (trochaic tetrameter), which the real words don't fit, so people's brains kept landing on something nonsensical– usually "all the lonely Starbucks lovers" (ALL-the-LONE-ly-STAR-bucks-LO-vers)

I just love it

prosody is sort of a pet topic of mine, I champion learning about it because I consider it to be the equal counterpart of rhyme, but a lot of people are woefully underinformed about it. I honestly think should be taught in grammar school, because a basic understanding of prosody makes a great deal of poetry and song more accessible

I was going to make a thread trying to encourage goons to write double dactyls or mcwhirtles or something (maybe start with something simpler like limericks?), because poetry is fun, and I was going to use this example to help illustrate a brief crashcourse in stress-timed speech and poetic meter, but I never got around to it because I figured I'd get like 5 replies, most of them insincere
are you being insincere? that's mean, I can't believe you tricked me

God that pro-LGBTQ song of hers was sinfully awful. It's like when you're at a gay bar and some soused loud white women come in thinking they're going to have a great affirming time with all the gay dudes like some kind of wretched gay tourism that straights do and it just ends up them using it an excuse to invade the personal space of attractive gays while making a minority scene entirely about themselves, but instead it was in song form.

I need to sit down I'm reeling. My brow is sopping wet. My heart my heart wont stop thundering in my chest. Please god...

I can't really tell if you're making fun of me or not, but I have to say I agree with your post on the previous page about liking popular stuff.
People should just like what they like and not care about what other people think about them.
Like the whole 'guilty pleasure' concept? Dumb as gently caress. Why should you feel guilty for liking something? Sing along to wrecking ball if that's what you want. Don't feel guilty about it. Fight the power!!
