Honestly curious for a list of that

Actually that hosed up two parter with poor ghettos in the past springs to mind, but no fair picking that one, that was a criticism of RL politics at the time

I've only watched DS9 recently and that episode is really a peak example of "they needed people to watch it on fuzzy CRTs" because in high def it's really distracting how clean the slums are.

the one where obrien brilliantly escapes jem hadar capture but bashir orders him to stay because he wants to play benevolent doctor for a group of people who will kill them anyway

lol just saw that one, it was great

I'm probably gonna ask this in more than one thread but like, why is O'Brien an NCO? Not like, what chain of causal events led O'Brien to not obtain a commission, I mean like, why does Starfleet have an entire category of rankings that seems to apply to only one person? As far as I can tell it's a shame pig thing?

This reminds me of the Casino Heist episode where Sisko doesn't want to help because the program whitewashes the racism of the 60s, ranting about how black people could only be laborers or performers and would never be permitted to be customers on the strip. But it turns out that by the year her cites that Sinatra and the Rat Pack had been working with Sammy Davis Jr. on the desegregation in Vegas for like a decade and succeeded in strong-arming a lot of the big hotels and casinos into going along with it.

I always thought that was kind of funny since I heard it. Like maybe by that point in the war Sisko is so frayed that its getting hard to keep all his Enlightened Starfleet Renaissance Man skills strait and his encyclopedic knowledge of history is starting to blur a bit.

Honestly it's pretty unbelievable that he'd be able to keep track of that much history without slipping things up by a decade here and there. The 1960s are like 400 years prior to when DS9 takes place, which is the equivalent of like, 1620s relative to now. Even pretty well educated people get muddled about major events in that period (Witch Trials and 30 Years War in Europe, Ming-Qing Transition in China, peak of Mughal expansion in India, etc) unless they're actually specialists in that one of those events.

What I'm saying is that it's good that Sisko was wrong.

I feel like he got more characterization than she did half the time

I can definitely name more strong, driving traits of Curzon than I can of Jadzia, despite Curzon having like 1% as much screen time.

"Show don't tell" is generally good advice but DS9 managed to pull off a lot with Curzon and Morn all from "tell."

Kinda funny that Worf gets to gently caress up a lot but also be badass as contractually obligated

It kind of bleeds through the fiction barrier that it's contractually obligated and thus becomes substantially more comical and lame.

Jadzia Dax (and presumably Ezri as well).

It was extremely funny to me that they felt so low in their confidence about having an out queer character that it was couched as like, a sub-component of an extremely ~wild and crazy~ alien lifecycle instead of just like, incredibly mundane.

Also I have a bone-deep confidence that Miles is bi.

this talk about queer trek got me thinking, so there was that one episode where quark teams up with a woman pretending to be a man so her horribly sexist society will take her seriously right, and her entire gender change outfit is fake ears and pants, why does lobe size not scale up with wealth due to the availability of expensive lobe augmentation surgery

if humans could get big high-tech dongers that actually functioned right then every short-sighted rich guy would be packing a 14 incher and ferengi are basically cartoon capitalists so this seems like it should be canon

Which Trek culture is it that can't provide healthcare but can blow the everloving poo poo out of anyone in the galaxy?

Ferengi?

Dominion will provide the Jem Hadar with healthcare for exactly as long as the Jem Hadar are useful to them and not one second longer.

The important thing to this whole scenario is that humans are the only main space faring civ we've seen who would be ok with this, thats why they were chosen. Its all so, logical.

What horrifies me is the knowledge that if garak showed up again they would forget the most important thing that makes his character work: He has to be an awesome super talented super spy, and a complete lazy weirdo disaster of a person

Garak will just be Jack Bauer.
