Does Def Leppard count?  The band was formed pre-1981, but they only really hit their stride in and after 1983, with albums like Pyromania and Hysteria.

Lotta action in this thread lately! Hmm, what about Dirty Looks? Does anyone else still remember them? Their first album came out in 1985, and they were going up until the late noughties, until Henrik Ostergaard died.
