the political aspect of disco elysium is absolutely one of the best things about it. how many other games are there that have the courage to discuss political ideas explicitly without compressing everything into a bland mush that couldn't possibly offend anyone? Cybernetic Vermin's point is also really true - rather than a fantasy about being communist, it's more about mourning the collapse of the real-world socialist project and how we're supposed to proceed after it's happened.

i think it absolutely holds up even discarding that, though. the writing is so constantly beautiful and funny and moving and surprising. it's a role-playing game that actually lets you do a bit of role-playing beyond what way you kill guys or which faction you join.

DE handles its political themes so much better than any other games ive played. concerning communism, i particular like how the game highlights the contradiction that no matter now much of a pro communist comrade you try to be, you are still a cop; a reactionary, class-traitor whos job it is to keep the status quo.

the game is outstanding at switching from comedy to drama seamlessly and has so many "holy poo poo" moments that its really impossible to talk about without heading into deep spoiler town. i really have a hard time choosing my favorite moment in that game but it might be revelation you have with Volition that your thoughts could be lying to you during Klaasje's conversation . the way that check was handled just blew me away and made me reflect on how i was playing 20 hours into the game

I haven't really played an immersive single player rpg since skyrim, but i always liked how they at least tried to make npc's seem like they have lives. they wake up and have a daily schedule and then go back home at night. and they follow you around if you try doing suspicious poo poo. it was obviously far from perfect but it really made an improvement over the typical "this merchant stands at his fruit cart 24/7 day and night" thing. doesn't seem like anyone's trying to do that anymore, but i also haven't played anything modern because every ambitious game seems to launch as a pile of poo poo these days.

i like "living" worlds that are well thought out but i also can't think of any recent examples

This is where I am too. A friend of mine loves DE so much that he played and beat two playthroughs in the course of two days just because he needed to know where the story led and how the game handled his decisions. Though I suspect that if he had put it down about as long as I have he would have lost steam too - while you're playing it, it's a game that grips you.

the part that punched me the hardest was loving with that lady outside the bookstore about her husband being missing just because you were a dick. then you find a dead body at the docks and track down the widow to deliver the bad news. then she opens the door and you realize it’s the lady you were loving with earlier.

heck yeah, start charging in and you'll feel more comfortable (only suddenly jumping occasionally)

there's a bell curve where you start to get powers and feel confident until the post ending content where, especially with the dlcs, enemy types can be really varied all at once. it (to me) felt like i had more of a challenge and i was less ad hoc with my strategies for entering a room

shield and launch are my gotos and i mostly use spin and grip to hold things off while i recharge. at leas it did when i last played it but it's been a while, and it can accommodate a whole bunch of styles

you ever really really enjoy a game but then for whatever reason you don't play it for a week or two and then it seems like too long to pick up from where you left off, but also you can't really be bothered starting over, so you just don't play it again even though you'd probably continue to really really enjoy it if you did?

I think I'm near the end of Control, I just got through the ashtray maze and I'm still loving it. It feels difficult in spots but not unfair, and once I unlock the right combo of mods to clear a room/challenge/mini-boss I feel like I can wipe the floor in a way that's fun rather than boring.

Also I'm still totally smitten with the setting and lore and weirdly fascinated by the Threshold Kids videos.

I did this with FFX. I unlocked everything in that game (the monster arena, the celestial weapons, blitzball, the al bhed language books, etc), got to the final boss, and said nah and never beat the game. I only beat it after I picked up the remaster a while back.

i really don't get this, the script was fine for a video game and the actors are actually pretty good? i mean, maybe my expectations for acting in games are "anything better than shenmue" but i found it passable given remedy is a pretty small studio

i didn't find that effected the pacing or performance, to me. it seems about in line with max payne and alan wake. it could be the studio is finnish, so there's some quirks coming through in stylistic choices

it could also be my bar is low, since many many studios are terrible at acting performance and direction, regardless of language or origin

yeah i finally got over my thing of "it's on sale, gotta buy it for when i want to play it eventually!" i "save" a lot of money by just buying what i want when i want to play it (even if it's at full price). of course sometimes sales are just too good - i got new super mario bros u, astral chain, and link's awakening all digital on switch for $80 in the gamestop sale cause little jones loves watching me play zelda and mario and astral chain just looked cool. i know that the nintendo games will get played, but it's possible astral chain was a waste. well see. the tub in the new place has a vertical back that you can't really lean against to play video games laying down, so maybe a tub pillow or something will help with my tub gaming

of course sometimes i see a sale and it's like "ok yeah i'll pay $3 to play that right now" so im still a mark. but at least im a mark who almost always buys poo poo to play immediately, instead of for "later" that will never come

i also learned not to pre-order this way - i got really pumped about finally playing ni no kuni cause its supposed to look like a ghibli movie, and i had a ton of down time to play a fat jrpg. i pre-ordered it but by the time it came out i didn't have time any more. it's been on crazy sales since and i still haven't played it. i got octopath traveler on sale one time cause i wanted to play it but by the time i got the code, redeemed it, etc the same thing happened. i was _really_ bad about this with steam sales back in the day (i think we all were) but

oh word, i got psnow a couple weeks ago and suspect it'll serve much the same purpose. it isnt near as good as gamepass is, but there'll always be something interesting to play so there oughtn't be much, uh, impetus to buy generated from sales. havent had much time to mess with ps5 since the move though

Prey
Titanfall 2
all the Dishonoreds
Control
Doom Eternal
Hades
Jedi Fallen Order
wolfenstein 1 + 2

All of those are like definite plays and there are a bunch of other good but not as good games in there too.
