quiggy posted:IANAL but i assume it depends on what the original terms were and whether or not the previous licensing agreements leave room for modification after the fact almost certainly not valid if it's "we reserve the right to retrospectively modify this contract at any time" because then lol what contract, but it could allow for arbitrary pricing changes though I'd have expected that someone would have raised that before...

the great part about this is that even if unity walks back every single announced change, they've permanently damaged their own reputation. i know that i'm never gonna use unity for a hobbyist project again because on the off-chance i decide to sell it and it takes off i don't want to be on the hook for this stupid bullshit

god the map and journal in bg3 are awful. Jenny Agutter posted:apparently the terms of service state unity can change or add fees at any time. oops! ianal but i thought "contract wording that lets you change the contract without both parties' agreement" is specifically called out as unenforceable. like how you can't use a contract to sign away your right to an attorney, or give someone permission to murder you, or whatever. the law just doesn't work if you allow that sort of thing. can you actually write one that says "also, we can unilaterally go back and add extra charges for anything that happened in this business relationship any time if we decide to" and will that stand up in court? it's like buying a car and the car company says three years later "by the way, we're now charging by the mile, so someone will be by to check your odometer and send you a bill." no goddamn way would you have to pay that, even if the car's EULA (what a sad phrase) said they could. EULAs are not magic spells, a suit could easily end with a ruling that this exceeds the bounds of "fee" for some arcane lawyer reason or that you can't put that sort of thing in a contract
|
![]() |
|
well they’re not retroactively charging, only charging for installs after Jan 1 2024. in any case unitys lawyers say it’s fine for them to change/add fees, and I doubt the vast majority of unity devs can even afford a corporate lawyer, and unity will absolutely settle with anyone who can afford to sue before it gets decided by the courts. maybe all the backlash gets them to back off to one extent or another but I doubt the courts are going to be much of a factor

Roosevelt posted:can anyone even do radiant damage, other than my shar-worshipping cleric who i suspect is looking for any excuse to bleed my charming elf rear end over an altar? a couple of weapons can, and there's a ring that adds it iirc but pillar of radiance or whatever it is seems basically useless. also for that fight the "spawn enemies everywhere" produces a classic "your wizard gets killed round one" situation. In the end I had to keep reloading until I got lucky with a round one stun that let me take him down and then clear out the rest of the trash

i think games like the black watchmen are cool but the fact they kind of depend on external websites functioning and the domains still being owned by them kinda sucks. i have paid money for a cool game that just might not work if the developers decide its not worth the money to keep paying for its upkeep
