I put a pin in my list of unplayed games last night and got Mad Max - played a couple of hours and its OK, but not really enthusing me.

The Arkham style punch-block-and-dodge combat doesn't work like as well as it does for the Bat, but the driving is fun and some of the car wreck graphics are spectacular; I don't think I've seen flame burning around the edges of models without clipping done as well as it is here.

I'll give it a bit more time and see if things pick up the pace a bit, it doesn't have the always-action feeling Fury Road did so far.

Skyrim and Fallout4 get a lot of (mostly deserved) bad rap for their halfassed VR implementations but they are still p. much the only huge open worlds in town and despite all their failings the sheer cool factor of being inside theses well-known worlds make up for a lot. If you can find them in a sale / bundle for half price or better I'd say try one of them out (Skyrim is probably the better of the two technically and the archery with two VR controllers is :discourse: , but few things to me have been as fun as the 10MM pistol in Fallout4 VR)

fakeedit: bleh you're out of luck right now:

Video Jamers if you don't have an ITAD account I would recommend it, its really useful for picking up stuff you don't need right now / don't want to pay full price for. The page layout is a bit unintuitive / labyrinthine but you're smart folks, you'll figure it out.

MAD MAX is about done, 48hrs on the clock for the main story, all the side quests and about 80% of the open-world locations. It definitely picked up once your car and character upgraded past 'wet paper bag' status, though in doing a bunch of missions before really getting into the story I think I overpowered myself a bit and was wrecking effortlessly almost the whole way through. Some of the bigger battles where they throw 8 mixed skill dudes at you and four or five waves of similar all without any chance to heal up was fun though.

If you like open worlds, car smashing and very violent combat (late-game I did a 'Weapon execution' on a mook who was just getting to one knee and Max swung this big two-hand wasteland billhook like a loving golf club into his head, I was gently caress) def pick this up in a sale.

Like I said before, a good looking game as well.

Decided to try Far Cry 5 on the free weekend, I played 1-4 all through to completion and enjoyed them all (to varying degrees), this one seems very much 'more of the same', very pretty looking game as well. I popped 3 cultists with a pistol and then found a compound bow in a bunker as my first mission reward and I haven't picked up another gun since - clearing an outpost without them ever knowing you were there is a lot of fun. The bow handles much like the previous games, especially in Blood Dragon where I also used it pretty much exclusively.

I don't know if I'd pay full or even half price for it, but a tenner seems a fair outlay.

Also I have a dog buddy who will sniff out bad guys for me to arrow

One thing about FO4VR - in the original game I used the VATS stuff all the time, it was a staple of combat, but in the VR version I completely forgot it was in the game and never triggered it once in the approx. 40hrs I had in-game.

I read later it was a buggy mess of an implementation, but the fact was you absolutely don't want to use it in a full immersive 3D world.

I hit about 8hrs in FarCry5 before the free weekend finished, I like it well enough to pay the small sale price; also, they had a double-up with the sidequel New Dawn, and also an offer of a further 20% off if I spend some of my 'Uplay Points', which I didn't even know I had. Twenty notes for two fairy long games seems OK to me. A couple of the story missions were a bit poo poo (lord do I ever not want plane dogfighting in a Far Cry game again) but the open world missions are mostly fun and organic in how they unfold.

One thing that has been good about playing this; for the past few years I've been a joypad-only Jamester, but I wasn't feeling the aiming in FC5 with the pad so thought I'd try M+KB again - wow I'd forgotten how much fun it could be, a total change in how I was playing. Much more confident I can tag quickly moving bad guys and switch targets to prioritise, you'd never get this with a pad (without some generous autoaim). I still like analogue stick movement better, is there such a thing as a half-joypad for a desktop that will let you stick-and-mouse?

The confidence boost might also be I saved some ingame cash and bought the 'prestige' AK rifle and it is so much better than the ones you'll pick up off the cultists its not even fair. A midrange optic, long mag and a silencer, a 3-round burst will drop anyone but the heavies (and these guys you can take their helmet off with one burst and their skull off with the second as long as they don't surprise you and you play it cool and don't panic), suddenly the plinking of rounds into badguys as they swarm you is no more.

Definitely one to think about if you like open-world FPSes.

PS. STOP SHOOTING ME WITH DRUG BULLETS AND KIDNAPPING ME PLS.

is the witcher a good game? can i hop in at the latest one or do i need to play from the beginning?

Yeah, W1 is the very epitome of euro-jank and should only be played as a historical curiosity, W2 is much better (and deeper) but still has a lot of rough edges. W3 is as close to a perfect game as I've played in years, especially with the DLC which is essential IMO, proper excellent stories and not Horse Armor.

You could read a recap: https://www.polygon.com/2015/5/18/8620223/witcher-3-guide-witcher-2-witcher but don't let missing all the W2 plot out put you off playing W3, theres a bit at the start of W3 where you are asked about what you did in the second game; just pick whatever sounds interesting, or look here:

https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/The_Witcher_3_decision_checklist

(but don't scroll past 'prologue' as its spoiler city onwards)

If you have W2 in your backlog of games give it a try, if it grabs you there's a lot of game to play before you even hit W3.

I put a pin in my unplayed games list again - Hard Reset (Redux) - yeah this is a throwback to old-school linear corridor shooters and no mistake (I don't remember the last time I had healthpacks instead of health regen). The rainy cyberpunk setting is decent and atmospheric, but the weapon loadout is anemic at best and the enemy roster is somewhat thin on the ground, I think maybe 8 different types, and two of those are just flood trash. I read it's only about 5 hours in total so I'll continue on to see the end. Usually these days I like to have a game with a story and while this does, its kinda obscure so far - maybe it'll all wrap up later on.

Finished the Titanfall 2 campaign at 7 hours, just a good length IMO to keep the plot and setpieces coming without stretching out any filler levels. Apart from the Viper mech fight on the ship hull I really enjoyed everything it threw at me, definitely if you like FPS and big robots this is a no brainer buy on sale.

Especially liked how at the start it would pit you against one or two mechs and by the end you were in pitched battle blowing away twenty plus of the drat things.

The modelling on the mechs was exceptional as well, I'm glad I watched the end credits and you get a good look at the unique mercenary mecha and they are all excellent.

I posted about this before in another thread but if you enjoyed Overlord and would like more 'hordes of minions doing your bidding', go buy Undead Horde while it's 60% off

https://store.steampowered.com/app/790850/Undead_Horde/

It's not even as strategic as Overlord's different minion types, so if like me you don't dig strategy type games don't let that put you off. I absolutely enjoyed my 11hr playthrough, and you can start a NG+ if you want more.

Its also in this Fanatical bundle

https://www.fanatical.com/en/pick-and-mix/platinum-collection-build-your-own-bundle-june-july-2020

so if you can find two other games on there you fancy to make up the asking price (Orwell is meant to be OK?) then that might be a better purchase.

edit. Do check Steam prices before buying a bundle right now, Orwell for example is £1.79 to buy.

ED is the epitome of 'Make your own fun', I put checks 915 hours in just flying around, upgrading / engineering my ships and shooting pirates, probably the last hundred hours in VR where the game really shines.

I haven't logged in to the game in almost a year, and I know there have been a bunch of new additions since then, not least player-owned starship carriers. New players can probably get up to speed and one of the previous 'endgame' ships (the base unengineered model) in a week or two now, which honestly I think is a bit of a shame; a lot of my fun was early days in a Space Transit Van making small delivery runs, now with the right knowledge you can make tens of millions in a single mining run and skip over all the early ships.

Played 7hrs of Cloudpunk over the past couple days. The game looks fantastic, the huge cyberpunk city has the rainy aesthetic absolutely perfect - I usually don't like the 'chunky pixel' look but here it seems to work for the huge neon-washed maps.

The gameplay, well I don't think its going to be for everyone - there's not a lot of interactivity past delivery quests with an occasional moral choice at the end, and picking up junk on the streets to scav for extra cash / picking up collectibles to take to various npcs. No combat, no jumping, no fail states or gameovers so far at all as far as I can tell, so yeah if 'walking sims' aren't your thing this will disappoint.

I saw a few Steam reviews decrying the game as 'Full of SJW poo poo', those reviewers are thin-skinned rightwing tools. The game has a bunch of stuff to say about 'android' rights (standing in for LGBTQ issues etc) and also the rich / poor divide. I did an irl lol when I met Glen Bo, one of the npcs you can run into who demands you debate him like king fedora reddit - the dialogue / humour in the game is really its main selling point I guess and it mostly hits the mark.

I'm enjoying the game, you may find it good or you may think its just wasting your time depending on your temperament.

edit: The newest patch lets you drop into full fps vision instead of 3rd person following your character, and I like it a lot better for running around the city streets.

also another lol at streamer Rory Alpha, I can see why Trumpy-types got butthurt.

re: Mad Max, yeah when you upgrade a stronghold to always give full gas when you arrive (also full water / health etc) and you can fast travel there at any time really easily it does cut down on the 'empty wasteland' feeling.
