I'm slowly easing my way into a new Fallout 4 VR run, with Sim Settlements and an infini-companions mod so I can recruit settlers as disposable allies. The approach is a more or less a normal game, but as a burgeoning civilization builder / warlord who recruits posses of followers to fight and die in order to win my battle.

It already feels like a more interesting and fitting narrative than the traditional, lone mecha-god play style. I get that in every video game the main protagonist upends hundreds of lives by dint of being inexplicably better than everyone, but if I woke up in a post apocolyptic hellscape, I'd be insulating myself with allies and followers first, then buggy 200 year old spine breakers second. And the former has much more lore-friendly mechanisms for dashing the plans of every major faction on the board.

Playing a VR shooty game sort of betrays a fundamental lie of the genre- in VR it's obvious that you should absolutely not be able to win a gun fight against one trained gunman, and fighting alone against multiple people of any skill level is even more preposterous.

Either you need to be able to get shot in the face a bunch, or you need to somehow know where everybody is and what they're doing while you cower behind boxes. Otherwise, you can't have human level perception and human level weaknesses to bullets and still win these sorts of fights.

Quite a claim. And at $10, it will make a nice addition to my ever growing library of unplayed steam games.

Anyone know a good, but cheap, gaming monitor? I'm eating input lag in the 20-60ms range due to old, low refresh rate monitors and it bothers me. The only things that matter to me are low input lag and high refresh rate. Colors and 4k can take a walk.

There was a distinct point where the creators decided that the game should be scaled in difficulty for the 40hr/week BoI streamers. It really made the game less fun to play.

I just picked up Star Shelter for VR and despite being buggy abandonware, it's actually a really engaging experience. It's a survival game set in space, where you're scavenging space junk to fix up your spaceship.

Some games in VR just really work.

Any steam recommendations for an old who never liked video games, is probably going to be playing games from a lazy boy chair, and is likely to be using a usb keyboard/trackpad? I need a bunch of time kill activities for my dad, and he asked for games since the news has been so painful to watch lately lol.

For instance, this is a tier 1 support person between a rock (their boss / the dev team giving them zilch backup here) and a hard place (angry customers) winging it. Like, who would followed any of this mess and decide this company is a safe harbor for their emotional energy.

The problem is that it's not broken in enough meaningful ways that it makes a difference. Unless, of course, you're doing a try hard no-kills silent assassin run out the gate, in which case the engine just isn't that reliable. Use quicksaves and it's fine.

Doom 2016 was novel enough to make a dying, over represented genre feel new again. It was a really good balance of big budget and unique ideas that made the game feel like a single, coherent idea being played out. Eternal was good fun, but it had a bit too much of everything to maintain that coherence.

Real Turok vs Turok 2: Seeds of Evil problem. Turok is the game you'd go back to play, even if it doesn't have the cerebral bore.
