the downside is that private servers are a thing of the past as well. so yeah you can queue up with your regular squad but the days of having a regular deathmatch server where you know pretty much everyone on both teams are gone

yeah i've been watching my friend play it. i'm probably gonna grab it sometime soon. it'll make a great LAN game

lol there's an unwritten rule in VR game dev not to suddenly move the player's viewpoint without their say-so etc; there's a quest in Skyrim where you have to go clear out a dungeon for one of the gods and they fly you up way into the sky suddenly and unannounced while doing the mission briefing that wasn't changed at all for the VR version, that was a ayee gently caress moment :o:

they do this once in alyx on purpose: before the final level you start to levitate off the ground in some sort of tractor beam. you only float for a few seconds but it was a deliberate choice to disorient you for a bit before the insane funhouse that is the last level. It's really well done.

also reminder to anyone with a headset that hasn't played alyx yet: what the gently caress why haven't you played alyx

ng+ is one of the best gameplay inventions ever. playing through the game the second time with all the powers unlocked is often even more fun than the first time through

yeah binding of isaac's victory lap feature is fantastic. it's already a roguelike so of course you're starting over and over all the time already. but if you beat a specific boss it lets you start over again with all the items you already acquired. then it's just pure destruction as at that point you're probably doing the cliche 'anime character walks into a room and everything immediately explodes'

it's great

i borrowed an oculus quest from school and found that i can run House of the Dying Sun in vr on my 1060. it's fun. recommended if you like games like freespace 2. just sitting in a space fighter cockpit and zooming around asteroids and such is real cool, and unlike elite dangerous it has stuff to do

vr flight still gives me a headache in a way that real flying doesn't but i'm getting used to it.

yeah i was playing it at a LAN and it really shines when you decide how each room will be your own little horror movie scene to play out as people watch and laugh

it's really good

as for my gripes it's just those small things they could have added which would have been the cherry on top. they never use the environment to inform the story or even the gameplay. same goes for introducing new enemies. it resulted in that sort of flat feeling where you know that each level was laid out from the get go rather than the game reacting to the chaos you're unleashing. for example the scientists are the same in the beginning and the end. just standing there and walking back and forth. why are you not given a small group of scientists who've barricaded themselves into room after you've unlocked the charging ability? why do you not see the soldiers getting more unhinged and desperate, randomly shooting their flamethrowers down alleyways before you've even interacted with them? where's the lone dude who just caps himself before you have the chance to devour him? why don't you see jets carpet bombing the background with agent orange in the final levels? where's the desperate team of scientists trying to arm an atom bomb that you can get one of the uranium orbs from? stuff like that. things that really make each encounter more memorable. just those smaller finishing brush strokes that would have really added an edge to the entire experience

just a few months ago i was telling a friend about 'the ooze' and how it was a pretty unique concept that should be revisited with a modern engine. then carrion came out
