That's fair, the enemies are really annoying. I think they tried to make the combat dynamic with the whole combo thing but weapon switching is too sluggish so it always feels like a chore. I love everything else though.

SH1 has a fairly dumb story about cults and reviving an old god etc etc and SH2 manages to take all that dread and horror from that and turn it into one of the best personal-scale stories ever told in a video game. It'll forever be a highwater mark in video game storytelling and atmosphere for me because of how it pulled that off at a time when most video game stories were still "man shoot alien with scantily clad big tiddy woman sidekick"

But yeah, it's clunky as gently caress.

Dark Souls 1 has the best world. DS3 plays smooth as butter but the first one is the whole package. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts, it's pretty magical.

I never played 2 but everyone seems to say it's good but weird?

And SH2 somehow managed to be even better. I even liked 3.

Yeah I can't really fault the gameplay or ambience of SH1. I was always a bit disappointed that the story was kinda silly. But the tech and direction are unreal. The PS1 jank actually enhances it.

Really bummed there hasn't been any sort of successor. Plenty of horror games but nothing comes to mind that uses that same sort of otherworldly dread.

Prey 17 is kind of a meat grinder and frustrating until you hit a point when, after getting enough upgrades, it all just clicks. Just absolutely expert game design. Well-done story without shoehorning in a Ken Levine plot twist. Great cast of characters for being on a derelict space station and primarily hearing about them through audio logs. It's just peak game design all around.

That's what makes the power fantasy so rewarding towards the end, I think. There was totally a moment for me where I became really conscious about how I was just blowing through encounters that took multiple tries earlier in the game when I still had to stealth around. I've only really had that level of satisfaction from Souls games.

Man, a couple years back I tried to revisit it in earnest, and just couldn't stick with it. I love the world so much but the quests and gameplay are so boring.

Sorta wish there was a TES3MP type deal for Oblivion, that would be a blast. Last I checked there was a project for it but it was super hacky and clearly abandoned.

Finished Prey. What a wonderful game. I thought the ending was a bit weak and then they threw in that spectacular post-credits sequence. We don't deserve Arkane.

Downloading mgs5 now with expectations calibrated appropriately for gameplay (high) and story (I am ignoring the story)
