Nobody outrules the Marquise de Cat!
in super mario bros for NES, mario starts as a normal sized man. then, he eats a mushroom and gets big. he turns into a giant man. we know this because princess peach is the same size as mario is when he's small. small mario is the size of an ordinary person, big mario is unusually big. mario is eating a magical mushroom and growing to twice his normal, original size.

in the modern games, mario starts big, or is always big. this is probably because big mario's sprite's proportions are more like a normal human's and easier to translate to 3d. peach is now the size of big mario, everyone else is too. big mario's size is now the size of a normal person, but in the original 2d games, big mario is like andre the giant sized. now he's just the same height as everyone else. this now means that getting hit shrinks mario to half his usual size, and eating a mushroom gets him back to his normal size

also, the toads are now small. they're as small as small mario would be, but in the older games, toad is the same size as mario. so everyone but the toads got the size upgrade

canonically, what is mario's original size? is mario naturally a very short, squat person who grows to normal size when he eats a magic mushroom, or is he a normal sized person who shrinks when hit?

getting the super mushroom turns mario into "super mario" in the first game up, lets just get that straight first. secondly it is canon that all the characters in any mario games are merely actors in the game meaning each game has different rules as it occupies a different universe. this question is much akin to asking how arnold schwarzenegger got pregnant to his twin brother scientist when he is physically unable to since he's a robot that melted to death in molten lead

He's a child in the NES games. Now he's a grown man.

except in that example that's arnold playing two different roles, but mario is playing the same role every time, and there seems to be continuity in the main series, for example bowser jr. persists after mario sunshine sets him up

the main series is still continuous even if it is a fictional story within a fictional universe

fine. its like how arnold isnt the same robot in terminator 3 as terminator 2 but is the same character. Bowser jr is an addition to the cast and like a travelling troop of actors they play the same roles and characters, but do stories that occupy different universes each time. the only established canon is that the cast of mario games are all actually friends.

basically the answer is that in some games the mushroom is what gamers like to call a "power up" whilst in other games mario is his default state and instead is "powered down" when he takes a hit. but never forget that marios greatest power is his incredible jump and kind heart

Mario is simply a man whose size changes in response to external stimuli, like an erection. You wouldn't ask whether the penis's natural state is flaccid or erect, both are natural depending on whether one is seeing boobs, asses etc or not.

the games show mario and luigi either starting small and becoming big (super mario bros) or starting big and becoming small (super mario bros 2) to save RAM but the truh is mario is small and gets big, and luigi is big and gets small

"small mario" in super mario bros. is the same height as mario is in donkey kong. Is that anything?

Mario hasn't gotten larger from eating a mushroom outside of the 2D games to my knowledge so I interpret as him getting stronger, kinda like Popeye.

Mario is never ‘small’, he’s just at varying distances away from the viewer. Eating mushrooms makes him get into your face, while getting hit causes him to run away in shame.

‘Big’ Mario can break the blocks because he is close to the screen, directly underneath them. ‘Small’ Mario can’t because he’s too far away.

small mario is mario as a child, a few years after yoshi's island. the super mushroom transports him through time to the future, while injuries send him back to his childhood.

The portion of the brick that's farther away is harder and more difficult to break.

If Im understanding correctly if we had free manipulation of the camera it wouild look something like this.

net cafe scandal

THats why mario can run full speed on a Platform without losing his balance... they're a lot wider than they look. And he's determined so basically he only wants to go forward not sideways, though, er, he gets stoked when he gets a mushroom so he wants to go closer to the camera, and then covnersely if he gets hit hes ashamed and retreats into the background, as was said already. Thats also why you cant go back past the screen you're on: MArio's determination.
