It still annoys me to no end, that the Entreprise-D doesn't have a science officer. Anything vaguely sciency is either handled by Geordi in Engineering or Crusher in Medical. It just seems like an odd omission for an ostensible exploration vessel.

Ghost Leviathan posted:I thought Data was the science officer. Especially qualified being a superintelligent sentient computer. But no, he's an operations officer that gets to fill in any spot where he's needed, cause he can literally do anything, better. They would be so screwed without him and Geordi; they're the ones keeping everyone alive.

You arguably play it for its cutscenes, so yeah, it kind of is!

Gravitas Shortfall posted:If you've got a brain/machine interface then a humanoid mech makes a lot of sense because your pilot will have a lot of instinctive control over the mech, once they learn its range of motion and weight. Just have the pilot sitting or curled up in the torso. But if we have that kind of technology, wouldn't a remote-controlled drone mech make more sense? You can even have it shaped as a humanoid, but there's no reason to put an actual person inside of it by that point.

Tulip posted:star destroyers are comically underarmed and oversupplied and it is very, very funny to me Well they're ostensibly carriers, and aren't supposed to do any kind of fighting on their own. But that has never been a thing in the movies, books, or games.

Farmer Crack-rear end posted:I feel like commenting on an Impstar being "undergunned" is a bit odd in a setting where the weapons are at least partly energy based. Like, if you doubled the gun count, would the reactor even be able to support firing them all? Is it more effective to increase the number or size of your turbolasers? Nebakenezzer posted:Past 80% the speed of light, the amount of energy needed to propel a given object faster climbs exponentially, so that at light speed, the amount of energy needed to drive any mass is infinite. (I think this is why only pure energy can move at the speed of light in normal space; no mass.) Saying things are based on energy is so meaningless. It would be like saying something's based on weight or height; it's just a property of something. Not sure what else to call it, though!
