How about alien civilisation from Amnesia games, whose entire society runs on adrenochrome vitae, which they extract by torturing kidnapped humans 24/7 on industrial scale?

The very fact that you can make holodeck characters self-aware and fearful of what happens then the simulation stops is beyond hosed up.
Also, being able to create super Moriarty by just gong "computer, create a character who is very very smart". Data was supposed to be a wonder of science in that he was a true artificial person and, whoops, turns out you can make them by the dozen down in the holodeck.
Trying to remember the name of short sci-fi story I've read a long time ago. A group of scientists on remote space station are working on creating artificial life, but all their attempts are failing. For entertainment, they use a machine that lets them roleplay as various characters which they control with their thoughts. At some point their characters start disobeying them, and they realize that they've actually created new life accidentally.
