Thanks for puttin' this thread together. I . . . still haven't watched the video. All the reactions from the USPOL thread had the same vibe that "industrial lathe accidents" do in the OSHA thread - that I was better off not looking. I'm still not sure if it's worth watching. I'm tempted, just so I can say I did if one of my co-workers ends up saying something ignorant, but . . . I dunno. Ugh.

A big flaming stink posted:lol you have no idea There is no evidence that could possibly justify kneeling on a guy’s neck for five seconds let alone five minutes. That’s Murder 1. If you really really need to incapacitate someone there’s a quick and easy way to do it. It has nothing to do with obstructing breathing. Wrap your arm around the neck, cradling it between your forearm and bicep. Apply a firm squeezing pressure for five or seven seconds. This hold cuts off blood flow to the brain causing unconsciousness, while avoiding damage to the windpipe. There’s one way out of this hold but you both have to be standing. Grab the arm with both hands and drop your weight to the floor. This will break the hold. If you’re both already on the ground there’s no way to break the hold. I don’t care if you’re Arnold Schwarzenegger, there is no way to get that arm off of your neck from a prone position before the loss of oxygen-rich blood to the brain causes you to go ragdoll. Murder 1.

Sludge Tank posted:Whats the threads thoughts on alleged planted provocateurs My first thoughts were that it isn't unprecedented, it isn't implausible, and I trust the ability of people nearby to get a general feel for his "vibe." But it'd probably be a bad idea to assume it's an officer, and some messages from someone naming names isn't really proof. It'd be like if someone at work said there were donuts in the break room. It wouldn't be wrong to assume it's true, but it would also probably be wrong to authoritatively claim that there are definitely donuts. But then this tweet came out: https://mobile.twitter.com/sppdmn/status/1266202225677910022 And now I'm pretty much convinced it's true.

I wonder what medal Trump will award to the murderers after he pardons them?

So what is the actual word on the ground re: damage in the riots. I've seen a lot of people say "what about businesses being destroyed" and others respond with "property is not as important as lives". Which I get and agree with. Is this just a case of actually not as many places are getting hit as what they are insinuating thus "what about businesses" is a de facto right wing talking point? (Note I don't care about like say a Target or a Best Buy or big chain outfit). Or is it really that callous to say like, gently caress you to your lives work to a small business owner who wasn't doing poo poo? Like I'm on board with huge levels of civil disobedience in terms of pushing back against violent cops, taking public spaces and vandalising / protesting public government stuff especially. But I see this other talking point coming up again and again and I just don't really know how it sits with me. Killer Mike getting up and saying "hey let's not burn down our communities" and he was getting blasted for it. I'm honestly asking here I'm not American and maybe I just don't get it from that sense.

SpaceSDoorGunner posted:There’s some looting, mostly in Minneapolis but mostly just protesters getting shot at with “less than” lethals by the cops. You know what? Between typing my post and this I’ve realised it almost doesn’t matter. I can’t trust that any story isn’t just being pushed by right wing pro cop sources anyway. I mean it’s truely bad that (apparently) a Native American resource centre, and several minority owned businesses have been set alight and I honestly believe that the people responsible for those things should be punished, overall change doesn’t happen without good and bad and ultimately I can’t just keep focusing on that as that’s what it intended by the people who control the narratives want.

Killer Mike getting up and saying "hey let's not burn down our communities" and he was getting blasted for it. I have loudly argued several times on this forum that I don't generally support rioting and property damage in most protests. We've had protests in my city that involved a large amount of property damage, and were completely unfocused and unrealistic (basically "let's smash windows of small local businesses because we don't like capitalism"). That earned me a lovely red title, but I maintain that in a lot of cases, property damage against non-corporate targets is counterproductive and stupid. I think this is different. Take a good look at the news. You don't even have to go to leftist sources. Look at what's happening, how disproportionately violent the police response is, and ask yourself, is focusing on the looting and rioting the most important thing to be upset about right now? You don't have to like it, you don't have to support it, but what the police are currently doing in America so far outweighs anything else, almost any amount of rioting is completely irrelevant.
