Watched 3 episodes so far. It's not great but I don't hate it either. It's pretty weird, I guess it's supposed to be The Office but "in space" (except not) and it's definitely not even as god as the US Office. I'm not mad that they're not tearing into MIC all the time but it's just kind of bland so far. The monkey business in ep. 2 was the most ridiculous/fun so far IMO. Hopefully it's more of that and less family drama nonsense.

Tr*ckin' and F*ckin' all the way to tha
T O P

I'm sure there's a good show somewhere in here, but the few episodes I watched come off as bland and unfocused. It's not clear to me what the writer's targets are or what they want to say. So much of the comedy plays second fiddle to banal platitudes and vague, uplifting messages. I suppose the inherent joke is that all the characters' achievements are in service of an absurd organization that should not exist, but that barely qualifies as observational humor. And, when the show periodically depicts Russia, China, and others as getting the leg up on the United States, it isn't clear that the Space Force is as an absurd concept in the show as in real life.

idk. I probably won't continue watching this. I like a lot of the comedic talent on screen but the script gives them almost nothing meaty to work with.

E: My other problem with the show is that it doesn't actually seem to understand the organization that it is mocking. Like, if this were a show about the 88-man service branch that controls, at most, an office in the Pentagon, that would be one thing. As Veep showed, there's a rich vein of comedy to be mined in portraying the powerless trying to appear powerful. Instead, the show skips over the satire and portrays a fantastical workplace comedy untethered from reality. I don't understand this world where Steve Carell commands a huge base in the middle of Colorado and can kidnap people at will (while still, inexplicably, being a joke to a bunch of high school students).

I love the series but the methods didn’t seem very threatening, which might’ve been part of the comedy. Those could’ve been three random people trying to chase her for no reason or unrelated.
The marital estrangement stuff hit me in the feels, not gonna lie. Steve Carell plays what could be a very stupid character as someone with leadership potential and emotional intelligence.

I thought the show was good and had a lot of funny moments. I especially liked Yuri, gently caress Tony and Jimmy O.

And I think a lot of the hate is coming from people who were expecting a hard hitting and highly political comedy, which Space Force isn't. It's a comfortable dramedy with lovable characters in an absurd setting. If you can accept that, it will probably be a lot more watchable.

Yeah there’s probably an early version of this where the thesis was “having a space force would be stupid and sucks poo poo”, and it’s hard to get 10 episodes out of that

Having watched this and Irresistable within a month of eachother, I'm of the opinion that Steve Carell can be a really funny guy, but writers are terrified of being accused of writing Michael Scott.

Finished the season last week and... yep, unfortunately. I think what I wanted from the show was, like someone said before here, VEEP but in space. Instead it's more like a goofy West Wing. Steve Carell can be great but here I think he's not being used to the full potential

I really disliked the ape episode because it felt like it was TOO wacky. The same goes for the chinese satellite attacking the american one.
Yet I was fine with the stuff later in the series - it felt silly in a way that fitted, I guess.

I put myself through all 10 of these, mainly because I dis-liked Seasons 1 of both The Office and P&R but they both turned out pretty drat good. But by god this is one of the worst shows on TV. I came in here to see the flames and people are generally positive? I'm gobsmacked - its brutally bad. The second biggest TV disappointment of the year after the abysmal Picard.

Yeah, the split seems to be "people who went in wanting to see this new show space force" and "people that looked at the cast and producers and went in wanting 'The Office: Terok Nor edition' and being real sad about it"

Yeah I liked it, but I wasn't expecting an office or P&R type show either.

That said, Space Force and Upload (especially Upload) have definitely convinced me that, of the two of them, Mike Schur was the much more important talent in the success of those shows.

I think painting everyone who doesn't like this show as not liking it because it's not the Office is poo poo. The show has weak writing and jokes that has nothing to do with whatever preconceptions you want to pretend someone has so you can dismiss them.

To me it felt like the Orville but much worse, (granted I only saw a few episodes of that show). I was expecting it to be funny and edgy satire, but it was just kind of lifeless. It tried a bit and had a decent enough cast to not be completely terrible but only managed mediocre, which somehow made it even worse. I think I said this in another thread, but it felt like they had a concept for something with potential when the show was developed, but then by the time it came to actually writing it, the writers knew they couldn't compete with how hosed up the real world actually was so just went super safe. We get a show that reflects the resignation of the writers to a time when, yeah, ok, the country is crumbling around us but now we can get excited about <checks notes> Space Force. Yay?

The TVIV chat thread was pretty vicious and most people I think tapped out after an episode or two especially with the reassurances that, no, it does not get better.

I really like The Orville because it's a good classic TNG-style show that just happens to have characters that are more laid back and willing to joke around, if Space Force had been a good sci-fi show that just happened to have some goofs I would have been pretty happy with that. Similarly I think it being a bad and weirdly reactionary sci-fi show wouldn't be a deal-breaker if it was funny. But it sucks at both.

Seeing people complain that the story isn't political enough comes off to me as very confusing. Did they really think that the show would just be "gently caress trump and his ideas" the show? Because it's very political to me, from what I've seen. You have, in trump stuff, being extremely petty and terrible (cutting the general's wife time because he isn't a "winner") while also being into the kind of present that a literal toddler would find cool (the star registry thing, please dont defend this, you cannot have claim to a star/asteroid/whatever, if one of those stars ended up being important in any way or having any valuable resources and you went "b-b-b-but the star belongs to me! I paid money for it!" your claim would be laughed out of any serious court).

It's really about a dude who is in a seriously awful situation, being put in charge of a branch of science where we really don't know how to do most of the things we assume we can very well, and expected to get results. Establishing a permanent moon colony(from what is basically nothing) in four years is just an insane goal and being petty and childish when it doesnt happen right loving now is a flawless portrayal of the current administration's "just do it i dont care how" attitude. That whole scene with the senate hearing is loving incredible, especially with the older senator being like "ha ha the earth is flat :)" is pretty biting and relevant. There are senators currently elected that believe the earth is 5000 years old and other nonsense.

It's not perfect but the writers need time to bring it into focus. It's a good show, and needs more time.

Solid characters, I'm interested into that BWAM couple, which feels natural and well done, and the john malkovich character is just tops.

I do wonder how hosed that prison guard is, considering you can't help an inmate escape for any reason, and you really cannot gently caress an inmate if you're the guard at the prison, I'm pretty sure you cannot consent to that if you're a prisoner (in a legal sense, so even if you said, yeah lets bang, it would still end in an arrest).

Outside of expectations, I’m just seeing a lot of people saying they didn’t think it was very funny. Which is subjective, because I thought it was pretty funny.

In the end I think this is the kind of show where you can say “give it two episodes and if you still don’t like it don’t bother” — it doesn’t really evolve drastically from what you see one or two episodes in, for better nor for worse.

The whole “BWAM” thing was kind of jarring for me because Tawny Newsome, the actress that plays Angela, has a podcast where she talks about race issues and she’s specifically called out people that fetishize other races as a racist and disturbing thing.

Yea, it's not laugh out loud funny but it's like shows such as Cold Feet in the UK.
I don't think America really has that kinda TV landscape and while I'm not saying "It's wrong to not find it funny" I feel like it's funny in the way a lot of UKTV is.

i dont think the show needed to mimic veep or the office or whatever. my issue with it is that the show isn't funny and doesn't have many interesting things to say. the only notable aspects of the show are its budget and the talent associated with it.

It’s ok I guess? It fell flat for me in that I felt it couldn’t decide whether it was dry, understated humour or broad farce.

I did like Steve Carell channelling Bruce Boxleitner as a kind of incompetent Captain Sheridan, but that might just be because I’m coming off a B5 rewatch.

You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? Just put your lips together and blow...

Interesting. I absolutely loved everything about this show. It got me in the feels so many times.

My favorite is probably Yury the totally obvious Russian spy. I love the little flair he gives all his movements and his attempts to get information from the daughter. “Let’s have babies and name them after your grandmother! ...from your fathers side. What was her maiden name again?” F. Tony being the walking embodiment of the internet gets me whenever he is on screen. I loved the match up of of him and Dr. Chan because those are two characters I didn’t picture interacting much and I really enjoyed them together.

And John loving Malkovich. God I love him in this. He plays super smart, eccentric, anxious and exasperated so well. His repeated insistence he’s not wearing a suit but a carefully selected ensemble tickles me. The cadence of his voice is perfect for this character. I loved him and Brad in the parking garage when he tried to light himself on fire and the look of glee on his face when he told Naird he has made his life by defying authority was awesome. His irritation at the Chinese was great too.

Yeah, the characters are grandiose and silly sometimes but I feel they’ve done well at really giving them a heart. I enjoyed seeing them come together and finding pride in being the red headed step children of the military. Spacemen.

I think what may have helped is I had never heard of this show or seen a trailer. I just saw Steve Carell’s face on Netflix and decided to give it a whirl. So I have absolutely no expectations and just let the show inform me what it was. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I think that's the case with everyone, they're mad about the concept of treating Space Force seriously rather than anything else. Like I didn't go into it with any previous conceptions beyond "Oh it's got John Malkovich in it"

Although the specific jokes you've mentioned there were way too obvious to me, Yury was easily my least favourite character and it worked better for me when he was in it less.
