S5: 10am on a Sunday morning during a beach themed breakfast show

I still remember that Christmas, when they broadcast the final few episodes with a great big obnoxiously-coloured clock in the bottom corner!

Channel 4 were great insofar as getting international premieres of the final few episodes of each season, but by the end they really didn't care. At least they were nice enough to have a repeat run of the series at 1am on Monday mornings...

Question to the newbies - what triggered watching Babylon 5? As far as I'm aware it's now only available on DVD (wasn't it taken down from Amazon Prime?), so to have several people all jumping in at the same time is a welcome surprise.

I'm enjoying watching this thread; but unlike something like Star Trek which is on Netflix it seems like this is a less likely show to have multiple people start fresh at the same time.

Wow, they originally showed it 5 nights a week? That's crazy, but man watching this show air like that in 93 must have been incredible.

No - those dates are from when Sci-Fi repeated the show daily.

Babylon 5 was originally broadcast weekly.

I just noticed that the newspaper uses the same font as the TNG credits.

I like how it references past episodes - the Raghesh 3 situation from 'Midnight on the Firing Line' and the Home Guard from 'The War Prayer'

Londo shouting "VIR!" is one of life's little pleasures

One of my favourite B5 stories is how Peter Jurasik gets into character as Mollari. He would sit up straight, shout out ‘MEEster GariBALdi!’, and he’s there.

The intro gives away that Delenn is half-human now.

Regarding the first point:
This is an error on the US DVDs - the episodes as broadcast had Delenn in her S1 Minbari makeup up until her reveal.
Thankfully the UK DVDs had this error corrected.

Regarding one of the guest stars:

Oh man, Londo’s wives. :allears: Timov is my favourite. Holy poo poo, every line of hers is absolute acid-filled gold. The whole plotline was a delight, and I had a strong feeling Londo was going to choose her, particularly for her honesty.

Did you see what they did with her name? Maybe look at it the other way...

The one thing I remember about Furlan was how she had barely escaped from one of the war-torn ex-Yugoslavia countries and had been in the US barely a year before she was hired for Babylon 5.

(and I noticed a weird flub at the end where they mention murders in the East End, but Sheridan clearly mouths ‘West End’).

IIRC when this was originally broadcast in the UK (scheduling quirks meant the last few episodes of each season were broadcast there before they were in the US) Sheridan indeed said West End - this was reported back to JMS on Usenet and he was able to get it corrected for all subsequent broadcasts.

My problem with the Season 3 cast credits is that there seems to be no consistency with how they’re directed - some of them are trying to be stoic and straight faced, Vir looks terrified and then you have Dr Franklin and Zack Allen grinning away!

Regarding the general...

General Hague was supposed to be in this episode, but the actor portraying him chose to do the DS9 episodes Homefront and Paradise Lost so meaning he wasn’t available. As a result, JMS intentionally killed off Hague off-screen as revenge. As noted, it actually works out better for the story, and JMS had intended for him to die sooner rather than later.

Apparently the remastered editions are also available on Amazon Prime too - a UK twitter account I follow had purchased them and was commenting how they were significantly better.

Did anything come of those Babylon 5 Blurays which were listed on an online shop?

Cailyn’s song is some terrible easy listening dross. Was it allowed to play so long to pad out the episode?

IIRC JMS wrote that song himself, so I suspect he wanted to get as much airtime as he could with it...

Most of B5's intros are pertinent to the story, but they are the same through the season. So if you see it once, you're good for that season. But I believe the first 1/4 of season 2 SHOULD be skipped on streaming platforms because it actually spoils something in that season.

I think they fixed that spoiler on the streaming platforms - the spoiler was on the US DVDs (but not the UK ones!)

Its nice to see this storyline expanded on, but idk if it adds much to the story as a whole. I guess it had to be ripped out of season 4 because of the cancellation rumours?

Spoilers for some behind the scenes goings on:

Thirdspace (along with In the Beginning) weren't planned when they were filming Season 4, but when TNT took on B5 for Season 5 after the cancellation they wanted some TV movies as well. ItB worked as an introduction for new viewers, and Thirdspace worked as a movie which didn't need intricate knowledge of the B5 arc.

Ellison was involved in the series (he co-writes an episode in the final season) - it’s definitely not a paying him off situation.

JMS (the creator and writer of Babylon 5) has been long involved with Ellison and I believe he’s in charge of his creative estate or something like that.

[*] Nice of them to include Marcus in the credits even though he's been dead for a while. I'm a little surprised they didn't show the rest of the former main cast some love too, and put Sinclair and Na'Toth and Talia in there too. (But not the forgettable fighter jock character that the network made them put in, because lol.)
[/list]

This is down to Sleeping in Light being the final episode filmed of season 4, so it retained the season 4 cast in its credits (which also explains why Ivanova is in this episode and not the season 4 finale, since that was filmed as the first episode of Season 5). I don’t know which version you’re watching, but the originally broadcast credits for the season 4 finale are specifically edited to remove Ivanova (and I assume Marcus?).
The DVD release incorrectly has the regular Season 4 credits for the finale rather than the edited one. I think the HBO Max version has the correct credits?
