@ the doctor Interestingly, this is 4 years before the anti-vax movement started, and this is a good encapsulation of that daftness. anti-vaccination movement has a very long history way before kareninitis hit the humankind. smallpox for example

The Hyperion is a really ugly ship. I feel personally attacked! Blocky design for 'inferior human tech' is an old thing in science fiction. I can't seem to find where it originated but there are a lot of such designs everywhere. Many games and other sci-fi works utilize robust, bulky and blocky 'function over form' for depicting earth starship designs and I honestly sort of like them. Any help with finding origins of robust construction design in sci-fi works would be greatly appreciated.

Antifa Poltergeist posted:though i image the narn and centauri throw f bombs at each other in centauri.centaurian?centaurianese? I'd say that they do it in their respective languages with the pun point being the fact that both centauri and narn know each other's languages, know that other party understands what they said but refuse to acknowledge the fact of knowing ps or worse, in narnese. Point being the centauri are of such low expectations of narns that they think no narn speaks or able to understand a second language. Fits centaurian decadent arrogance Erulisse fucked around with this message at 15:11 on Jul 13, 2020 |

CGI was on par with contemporary games.

Elder Postsman posted:Not the first time I've seen someone say this but games contemporary to Babylon 5 season 1 include TIE Fighter and Doom 2. Even season 5 we're talking about, like, Star Wars Rogue Squadron and Half Life 1. The CG in B5 is way ahead of those games and I have no idea how anyone can say they are on par. Are we talking immersion or polygon count? If we talk series-wide timeframe, Toy Story was released in 1995. After you finish crying of how old are we all, theres that caveat to the discussion - show and movie CGI was prerendered for max quality, whilst games had to be dynamically playable on small devices and not on render farms with aftertouches on a different device. To water it down - in 2001 we had mummy returns (enjoy https://www.thewrap.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/the-mummy-returns-scorpion-king-the-rock-bad-movie-cgi.jpg) and it was NOT on par with any game released back then.

Chevy Slyme posted:Yeah. A lot of what us old hands have to chatter about without spoiling things is the behind the scenes circumstances that acted as head and tailwinds for the show and explain a lot of the choices that leave new viewers scratching their heads. There are a lot more of those very early (and very late) in the shows run. Where you’re at right now, Disco, is basically the show firing on all cylinders at the very heart of what it tries to do. There’s just very little for any of us to say but “heat up some popcorn, because poo poo is going down” for the next, oh, 15-20 hours of television you’re about to watch. The willows must scuttle carefully...

^ Also, DS9 is all about promenade (the ring itself that appears to be what, ~500m dia tops?) whereas B5 entire inside surface appear to be inhabited, that is apparent from a few shots.
