Sigh.
My buddy recently went completely off the deep end and is now posting a bunch of #redpill fake anon bullshit.
Most recently was support for Trump stripping the shield laws of social media platforms of his choosing.

I was fine putting up with the Hydrogen water bullshit, and the EMF/anti 5g tinfoil hat bullshit, but this is too much.

Just in case anyone is solely focused on how this affects social media platforms, please remember that the whole "corporations have a right to free speech" thing also greatly affects FEC/campaign financing laws. So it's not such a stretch to see Trump use it to his advantage next election beyond Twitter messaging and into punishing opposing political donors.

Hello, AV is my work industry and you're drat right everything is hideously expensive and mostly lovely. I particularly love complaining to a company about a specific issue and them release a firmware upgrade to solve that issue which ends up breaking a dozen other things. Luckily Extron are pretty quick to reply to problems though they should be considering how much money we give them.

My favourite issue was a bunch of new Sony laser projectors we got in by the hundred. The first one I installed I noticed the top of the screen was tearing on moving images. I installed another and noticed the same problem. And another. And another. I got in contact with Sony, told them the problem and they reacted very very quickly. By the end of the week there was a guy sent over from Japan to blast all our stock with firmware that was probably compiled on the plane ride over. What had happened was they'd released a firmware upgrade as the models were rolling out of the factory, they tested the projectors before they left and they were fine. What they failed to do was test them UPSIDE DOWN which is the standard install position for the vast majority of projectors. So when you click through the settings and tell the projector it's upside down and to flip the image, that's where the tearing occurred. The Japanese guy was massively apologetic for not finding the fault before we got them and I hope that Sony didn't shame him too hard about it.

*edit: Just remembered we bought a Sennheiser powered speaker that killed itself a week into use. £2200. We sent it back, they repaired it and it broke again, just stopped working completely. The other powered speaker we bought from some cheap company for about £150 is still working fine after about 4 years... I think a lot of kit is just too clever for its own good, something pops in software and that's that. I very much love 'dumb' products.

*edit edit: NEC outdoor LED video walls, quarter million quids worth of video walls that have panels die once every couple of months and scaling kit that decides it doesn't want to scale properly. It's a good thing we paid for a service contract, it has definitely saved us a lot of money. NEC have probably spent about 3/4 of what we bought the thing for in replacement panels over the past 3/4 years we've had it.

 AV buddy?
Not specifically in my job title but most all decisions get my weigh in.

Most poo poo is stupidly overpriced yeah. I've got to say though, QSC has been REALLY good with their amps. I've got a SPA2-60 on my desk right now powering a couple lovely Realistic Minimus 7's (Actually Optimus Pro7's with a rear port) that I modded with a custom crossover. It's a bit of a waste on those crappy speakers but I couldn't rightfully put anything larger on my work desk without getting a brow raise from the boss.

I just gave a whole set of 6 in ceiling speakers and Extron XPA amps to a coworker because I don't have any plans to install any of that poo poo in my house. I already have more than enough equipment to put a proper good stereo in every room including the bathrooms.

I shouldn't need to recap the fucker after only 10 years. Still a hiss when it's running off of a UPS (battery power, not AC), but not nearly as audible. There's no ground connection on it. It sounds fine if you're playing audio through it, but without audio there's a pretty good 60 hz hum from the speakers. Tried both A and B outputs.

Your receiver has only 2 plugs yeah?
Is the hum coming through the speakers or from the unit itself?

If it's the former then you're in for a world of hurt chasing ground loops. If it's the latter then it's probably transformer hum and nothing you can do about it.

Goddamnit. That was it. Plugged it in between my TV and Roku and no more hum. Sounds as good as a low end Onkyo with ancient Infinity bookshelfs will ever sound.

poo poo design I guess. Weird thing is nothing plugged into it is grounded in any way; the TV doesn't even have coax hooked up to it. TV and receiver are 2 prong, receiver has no grounding screw on it, Roku is obviously on a wall wart. As soon as I disconnect the HDMI to the TV I get the hum again.

That might explain why ex's TV would sometimes freak out, but only when it was hooked up. It'd occasionally power-cycle, sometimes it'd switch to the built-in speakers instead of HDMI return, sometimes it'd just turn off. It was always a "wtf?". Never had an issue with my own TV (which is what it's hooked up to now). Her TV also has a 2 prong cord, and wasn't grounded in any way (no coax, nothing hooked up to it had 3 prongs).

LOL that's dumb.
Could be that's the default mode if your onkyo can't detect an input source? If it picks up a source but doesn't detect audio then it mutes everything? idk. Seems a bit of a reach for something so old and ...onkyo.

I wonder what would happen if you grounded the chassis separately.

Kinda wondering about the ground part myself, even though there's no grounding screw on it.

BTW, it still hums if it does have an audio source hooked up via RCA cables. Tried it with my phone (not on the charger) and roommate's mixer, also tried it with my PC. The hum only goes away once there's a TV hooked up via HDMI. It's bizarre. I need to find my multimeter and see if there's any potential between the chassis and a known good ground.

Random thought... I wonder if some of these outlets have a bootleg ground? The place was built with 3 prong outlets to begin with, but I found a couple of bootleg grounds in my last apartment.. which was built in 2003. There's a couple of outlets that flat out don't work too (nothing coming in on the romex, verified by meter - stone cold dead) - one of them being the GFCI in the bathroom. I need to see if I can find a tripped GFCI anywhere, but the only other one I've found has been in the kitchen. I'm fairly sure the late 70s NEC required a GFCI for outdoor outlets, didn't it? Other older houses I've lived in had one that protected all of the outdoor outlets and the bathrooms. The only outdoor outlet I've found works fine, but it's not a GFCI.

The hum coming from RCA is fairly common when you have the amp and source not grounded. It just happens.
Could be RF noise entering the single ended connection by the RCA wires acting as antennas, or just your source finding a ground through the RCA for whatever reason (usually poor chassis ground or circuit isolation on source).

Ideally, the amp should not be grounded (being class 2 and all) to an electrical ground because that could be another source of interference.

Yeah that sounds about right.
Signal ground and electrical ground shouldn't cross imo because the electrical ground can actually introduce noise rather than remove it.

Lol wait what if you plug the HDMI from one port into another on the Onkyo? Or touch the outside of the connector to a bare chassis screw?
