This is all well and good except true difficulty didn't exist in game design at this time and was all just cheap lovely tricks to keep people from beating the 45 minute long game in a single rental.

Yeah, Sakura Wars is real good. Protip: Give the koi-koi minigame an honest few tries. Once I internalized the hands and cards after a few games, it's one of my favorite things in the game.

It feels like nobody gives a poo poo about the next generation, probably because these things are supposed to come out in like 4 months and we know poo poo all about them, or maybe it's because there's like no next-gen exclusives and the big next gen engine isn't going to get games even starting development on it until next year so why not wait

That reminds me of how in the original Ring novel, the video tape is a memetic virus born from a mutation of the last living smallpox virus' anger at being wiped out and the anguish of a dying psychic woman and how the movie just went "gently caress that" and made it a ghost, and the ghost was much more popular.
