oh no, Esper’s drunk the kool aid. insurrection act:

“Vice President Mike Pence favored the idea, reasoning that it would allow quicker action than calling up National Guard units, and he was backed by Mr. Esper. But Mr. Barr and General Milley warned against it. The attorney general cited concerns about states’ rights, while General Milley assured the president that he had enough force already in the nation’s capital to secure the city and expressed worry about putting active-duty soldiers in such a role.
...
Mr. Trump and Mr. Pence then conducted a conference call with the nation’s governors in which the president berated them for being “weak” and “fools,” advising them to “dominate” the demonstrators. Mr. Esper talked about controlling “the battlespace.””

One of the amazing knock on effects of the protests going national so quickly is that even if some/most PDs manage to maintain discipline for a couple days there's always a couple high profile incidents where the cops in a major city go wild and it feeds back into the national protest narrative.

Some city officials have been trying to run the traditional playbook of co-opting protest leaders and local community leaders to let the air out of the movement (see Atlanta's attempt with Killer Mike etc) but the fact that there isn't any centralized leadership or list of demands has completely flummoxed them.

It's really uncharted waters as to how this will all go, the US hasn't had massive nationwide protests since the Iraq War and that required a concerted across the board anti-protestor media campaign to quash.

Some interesting thoughts but the discussion doesn't attempt to explain "why the virus is spreading so unevenly", it just leaves that topic off with this:

I'm really curious about why there's so much weirdness going on with the spread. Even between Asian countries there's been a really wide range from countries having almost no issue with the virus to others having major problems.

For whatever reason it hasn't exploded in the Atlanta metro yet, whereas out in the rural communities it's been spreading like wildfire. Some of the counties around Albany and Gainesville are up there with NYC in terms of per capita cases (1-3K per 100K), but still low in absolute numbers compared to major cities. The pops in NC and SC are a bit more evenly distributed with more mid-sized towns and cities so maybe there's more chances for outbreaks to gain momentum.

The rumor going around is that two units got into a brawl up on a narrow ridge and a bunch on both sides ended up falling into a ravine - at least some of the official reporting seems to line up with it. The terrain is so high and treacherous that the troops they send up there need to spend a couple weeks acclimating on top of rigorous mountain training, sounds like one of the worst possible places to fight in.

I forget which goon works up at GNMP but one of the guys I work with makes an annual trip up to Gettysburg for the 4th, this year he said he's going on the 3rd because 'there's a big crowd of protestors coming up to burn flags and pull down statues in the cemetery.'

I told him there's honestly enough gaudy monuments up there the Park Service probably wouldn't mind if a couple got dismantled.

Does Gettysburg get much in the way of protests? There's certainly enough Confederate stuff around but it's a bit of a ways to get to from Philly or DC/Baltimore.

Not trying to stir things up but Biden's almost certainly going to continue the Clinton/Obama/Third Way playbook of 'fiscal responsibility'/deficit reduction and relying heavily on private industry vs government-run efforts to deal with critical issues, while only making cursory gestures towards raising taxes on the rich and big business. For your non-Evangelical Business Conservative you're really not losing out and can always use the time to drum up funding for the next round in 2022 and 2024.
