I think that MBAs are useful, in case you are looking for an answer to the question of "Is lightpole a total fucking idiot".

To everyone that's filled with woe and despair, get out and loving volunteer.

Action is always preferable to inaction and it doesnt have to be active participation at the front lines. Action allows you to build a tiny semblance of control or at least make you believe you control a tiny part of the ongoing chaos instead of sitting at home feeling helpless and unable to change the impending doom that appears to be on the way. I plan on helping out with water or clean up when I get back to land.

I was reading on Economic Times the other day that Vietnam claimed zero deaths with a population of nearly 100 million bordering China
TL;DR they credited the following
-As soon as China announced outbreak they got a committee together to start planning, even before WHO mentioned anything
-They quarantined people based on the risk of infection rather than whether they were displaying symptoms
-All testing was free and subsidized by the government
-Public health experts and epidemiologists led the execution
-Decentralized system meant they could bring care to the individuals, and wouldn't need to bring them to a provincial facility unless they needed urgent care.

Is there a possibility any numbers are swept beneath the carpet? Sure, but while I'm not a doctor and no more qualified than any of the dipshits giving their two cents a few months ago, this does seem like a pretty reasonable approach to me!

Of course it's possible but from all accounts I've seen, they have handled it much better. My buddy has been there with his wife's family for the last 6 months or so and is reluctant to return to the US at this point. It's still a communist government though so there are some tradeoffs.

Asian governments generally take pandemics a little more seriously than the west since they have encountered them more recently.

The argument against Fauci lying:

https://www.businessinsider.com/fauci-mask-advice-was-because-doctors-shortages-from-the-start-2020-6

Argument that Fauci lied: he knew masks were helpful, told people not to get them (because of the healthcare workers).

Argument that Fauci didn't lie: it wasn't known that simple cloth masks were functional and the shortages were really, really that bad.

I'm indifferent, I'm more loving pissed that the administration botched poo poo so bad to put Fauci in that position (though he's kinda part of the administration).

I seem to remember at the beginning it was to discourage ordinary people that could social distance from wearing them to save masks for first responders or others that couldn't. In the US, where face masks arent common, N95s were seen as the only really effective protection and then only if you followed proper protocols. Theres a much greater understanding and evidence of the importance of even just a cloth barrier and people can point to data showing this. People are getting death threats for requiring or wearing masks even with the data.

Fauci has spent the entire year working to overcome the administration's prejudices and has been hamstrung at times. He has been the director of infectious diseases for 36 years, I dont see how anyone can call him a Trump toady. Fauci has done the best he can while the administration continues sticking its dick in every light socket it can find.

Super Rugby has been live for the past 2 weeks and the Euro soccer leagues are playing to empty stadiums right now.

The outgoing head engineer from the port of long beach was presenting to our class on their terminal upgrades which were going to be completely autonomous a la Rotterdam. I started asking about any security they had in place as the attack against Maersk had just happened and his response was "I'm sure the IT guys have something". The system is so weak and has no protection, the attack on Maersk was crippling and just about shut down operations for an extended period and it wasnt extremely sophisticated.

This doesnt even begin to get into the power plant poo poo. When I started at the power plant of a major hospital the chief engineer was livid as he was calling in IT for the 2nd or 3rd time due to the shift engineers browsing porn and getting viruses on the workstations in the control room.

Theres no software protection but even worse theres no protection from employees being dumb which is even more likely. I'm still surprised there is no mandatory high school or college class on basic cyber security.
