Randomly watched Punk/DBry Over the Limit '12 yesterday on the Network, some notes that I think are illuminating: – the match was excellent, of course – they managed to script a gently caress-ish finish (Punk rolled Bryan over during the Yes Lock and got the surprise pin just before tapping) that nevertheless had a clear winner and a reason to continue the feud – the crowd was crazy into it but – Cole spent the bulk of the first half of the match audibly bored, just shooting the poo poo with King and Booker – this did not main event the PPV – Laurinaitis vs. Cena did, which ended in a Big Show heel turn

Let's recall fondly the last Backlash (2018), shall we? First PPV after a pretty underwhelming WrestleMania, where...nothing really happened. - Pre-show: Ruby Riott defeated Bayley Right smack dab in the middle of Bayley losing all the time and them teasing endlessly but never ever pulling the trigger on Bayley vs. Sasha. - Seth Rollins defeated The Miz, Intercontinental Championship Best match of the night because Seth was in his "no character but wrestles his rear end off (in the WWE style) on Raw every week." Then Seth started a Cena-esque open challenge for a bit; the first challenge was answered by loving Mojo Rawley. - Nia Jax defeated Alexa Bliss, Raw Women's Championship Alexa got the heat the entire match before Nia made a big comeback, won, and then gave a stilted speech about how bullying is bad. Reaaaal bad match after they had an....OK....one at Mania. - Jeff Hardy defeated Randy Orton, US Championship I remember nothing about this; the two things I recall about this feud were Randy playing with Orton's ear piercings and the really good HIAC match later down the line. - Daniel Bryan defeated Big Cass LOL. - Carmella defeated Charlotte, SmackDown Women's Championship Carmella won clean. The Carmella/Asuka/Ellsworth stuff was stupid and damaging but this was arguably more preposterous. Charlotte then went off to have surgery on a ruptured boob implant. - AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura ended in a draw They both punted each other in the dick and got counted out. Man, did every feud Styles had between Cena and heel DBry suck. - Braun Strowman and Bobby Lashley defeated Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn They had nothing for Braun, the Owens/Zayn partnership had run its course, so the big thing out of this was the growing feud between Sami and grinning face Lashley, which was terrible. - Roman Reigns defeated Samoa Joe BEAT THE TRAFFIC (clap clap clapclapclap) BEAT THE TRAFFIC (clap clap clapclapclap) Definitely the worst PPV of the Network era. Imagine having the talent of Styles, Bryan, Joe, Nakamura (even in "gently caress it" mode), Sami, KO, and Rollins, and this is what you come up with.
