wearing a mask gives you an excuse to do the bain voice, which is all the reason I need

homemade masks only

wonder if moisture effects it, so mask which have huge amount of breathing going through it persist longer than say fomites on your jeans

SKULL.GIF posted:

I don't think that that's surprising. Remember the study a few months ago that found that the virus persisted for a long time on smooth metal surfaces but died quickly on cardboard?

Rough surfaces expose it more to the air which dries it out, and I expect the absorption properties of cardboard/cotton also suck moisture from the shell and expose the virus

yeah this makes sense

So I guess the question is the reduced protection from a cotton mask due to filtration worth the trade-off in comparison to an n95? Or maybe a single layer cotton mask over an n95?

lol the cotton is just useful for fomites, having a respirator will always be better. Doesn't matter if its slathered in covid, just store it and sanitize your hands, bing bong. hand sanitizer ftw

I looked this up and its astounding they went through the effort of making the mask, getting it certified & then they just put it on a website that looks like a scam. goddamn lol

Kinda that too.

Look you gotta understand Americans literally will kill themselves if they are forced to stay indoors 24/7, they're not goons. They don't have that power. The productive process is to manage their risk, not eliminate it. Get em mask, sanitizer, what have you.

honestly, thinking it over, it's remarkable how slowly this has spread given the initial R0 numbers combined with the method of transmission (aerosols)

we have "only" 7.85 million official cases in half a year. given the initial r0 of 5.47 I would've expected us to be in the dozens of millions by now

twiv mentioned this ages ago about how transmission is really not the most well studied, how one guy going through an area for 5 seconds managed to infect like 7 people (diff disease) but others can stay around for ages and not infect anybody. I'm sure it's all partly chance/probability but yeah it's not even close to the doomsday, flesh melting off bone, it appeared initially. Probably just the difficulty of studying, reliably, transmission across air.
