gay picnic defence posted:I thought a single virus could infect someone, it's just that the odds of a single virus landing on the exact part of a cell with the right receptor and then managing to not get nuked by the immune system were so low you typically need a shitload of them to get in your nose or something to be a realistic chance of becoming infected. Yup, most viral infection loads are usually between 100-1000 virii.

That and the spike protein really isn't any different outside of being easier to bind to ACE2 so it's a valid target for therapeutics. Still best defeated by not getting any exposure in the first place.

I do know that my colleagues in manufacturing just finished a bleeding edge biologics manufacturing site like six months before the pandemic hit, I’m actually borrowing ideas from them for our site. Scaling up this kind of stuff is tough, but that work has been done in parallel with Discovery because we knew this pandemic was gonna be bad.

sincx posted:* I think there's better ways now, like you find the genetic sequence that makes the good antibody (which is just a protein) and paste that into an easier-to-manage cell (yeast?) to mass produce. You pretty much got it- instead of yeast we use chinese hamster ovary cells. It’s fuckin weird Admiral Ray posted:i don't understand why we just don't have a single gigantic humanized rat with like 500 thymus glands to grow these antibodies in yet. surely someone has succeeded there. We have humanized mice, but they don’t need a huge thymus because antibodies are very small.
