June is here, and I would bet something that isn't actually a that Calcio Storico doesn't actually happen due to Covid-19, which is very sad. That being said, there's a good collection of past years' Calcio matches on youtube. So my plan is to set up http://www.psp-tv.com/r/CalcioStorico with a 3-game playlist every Saturday and Sunday in the month of June. Depending on my work schedule, I might be able to super-load something on the 24th, for the feast of San Giovanni, but I promise nothing. If people who like to effort-post wanna provide information about Calcio, go ahead. But c'mon, we know about Calcio already, it rules, the only thing better is Calcio from 1994 on 360p

There’s some dudes and there’s some other dudes and they’re all hot as gently caress. They fight. Or something. I think there’s dunking too.

First game was Verdi vs Bianchi from 2001 Bianchi won, 9-4 (I think, they never showed the scoreboard, I was trying to guess-translate the scores). Good game, with some solid runs, fights, and even one stretcher job. Now we have Bianchi vs Azzurri from 1992. Game seems way most fast-paced, especially on the restarts. We're about halfway through this one, and we have one more today. Join in the psp-tv channel if you can!

That Rossi-verdi game was fun. Cool to see how much more open and less fight the game seemed back then.

I went to Italy with my wife and in-laws in October and made it a point to go stand in Piazza Santa Croce. They were all really confused that I just wanted to go stand in this town square.

Hello, I am resurrecting this old thread for a science experiment. Permitting video evidence, I will be watching all 3 calcio matches of a given year, starting with 2019, and working backwards. My plan, in addition to just wanting to watch more Calcio, is to chronicle the "de-evolution" of the game. Was there a specific year in which open field play went from brawls to the more MMA-inspired grappling exchanges of the current incarnation? Was there a year when the vile Rossi squad had a shred of honor or integrity? Starting tonight, Wednesday evening, I will be watching all the calcios available, 3 games at a time until the video record runs out If you would like to join in, I will provide the link to the PSP-TV room

Any thoughts on how the last few years have been? I realize it’s a small sample size but I am curious to see if any trends have already emerged.

I think 2018 is gonna be hard to judge, since the first semi-final was Rossi vs Viola, aka Verdi & Bianchi, because Azzurri is sitting out their suspension from 2017. So Viola wasn't trying super hard, since they had to play each other the next game But Verdi vs Bianchi and also 2019 is super slow to start, with most of the fights at the middle quickly seeing dudes getting taken down and a guy just hanging out on top. It takes a while for the middle of the pitch to clear out, but when it does, you get some good long runs. Current Calcio I would describe as 1 part Hurry Up & Wait, 1 part GO MAN GO

BIG NEWS! Maybe this was mentioned in a previous year's Calcio thread, but if it was, my brain did not hold on to that information. Anyway, I have discovered that Prato, in Tuscany, plays a game called "Palla Grossa", which translates to BIG BALL, and it is very similar to Calcio Fiorentino. The ball is larger than the normal soccer/football, clocking in at around 650 grams. Also, the game is played at night, and I think the pitch is a tad smaller.

So I couldn't update this yesterday due to my probation for thinking Jennifer Maia could do anything Anyway, 2014 was a weird year. I could only find the 2 semi-final games, so I had to dig into Italian wikipedia for details. Bianchi vs Azzurri was an ok game, but Rossi vs Verdi got called about 35 minutes in because a Verdi refused to leave after getting expelled. There was a bit of a brawl, and the Mayor of Florence refused to hold the finals. Welp! 2014 playlist is still up if anyone wants to watch it

Apologies for the lack of re-watching recently. I was feeling a bit under the weather, but things are looking up now. Anyway, finding footage of 2010, 2009, and 2008 has been difficult. Apparently those years featured a lot of exhibition games with no real tournament champions awarded. Anyway, let's watch a complete grab-bag of footage of stuff from vaguely 2010, 2009, and 2008 http://psp-tv.com/r/CalcioStorico
