It'd be an interesting bit of characterization for Maria, assuming she fought for the revolution--she's shell shocked, burned out, and cynical over how things ended up, so now that she's a world away from that mess she has a keen interest in reading everything she can get her hands on, even stuff written by her ostensible ideological enemies. (And if she was a former loyalist, the explanation still fits equally well, except she'd then probably be more inclined to support Dostoevsky's position.)

I'm torn. Both "Have hundreds of spare glasses" and "treated glasses to be invulnerable" seem very in-character.

She probably misplaces glasses at least as much as she ruins them so why not both?
