so what is the bush?

a place far away in time and space. you probably don't live there.

I happen to work there and will be providing some hopefully interesting pictures for anyone who can't get there to see it for themselves.

let's take a look (mainly at the creatures that lurk there).

------------------------- ANTS ----------------------------------------

that's a green ant nest in a tree. they weave the leaves together with their silk. that whole thing is a giant sac full of ants.

look at these friendly fellows

reaching out their mandibles in greeting

luckily they are no real threat and are easily crushed

----------------------- BIRDS ----------------------------------------

small wading bird that lives around ponds

pigeons with cool haircuts. there are a lot of local variants easily distinguished by their head feathers and face/body colors. move 500m and you come across a new style of pigeon. very endemic and probably not properly documented yet.

magpies. how can you say no to these cheeky little warblers

a confrontation. no one was hurt.

a new bird. V. noisy in groups around dawn. they like bread and cheese

a new pigeon.

notice the new head colors and iridescence on the wings. This is only a few hundred meters from the last pigeon photo. I don't know if they would be classified as separate species but they are definitely very local, only 2-4 individuals of each type, and they keep to their own territory.

a water bird

another water bird. I think it is friends with the previous bird.

a different pigeon

a bustard. it's kind of like a mini emu, but it actually has big wings that it can fold out and fly with

not sure what these guys are called but they're v noisy whenever a human is near, always in a group of 8-12 birds

cormorant? type water bird. it needs to dry its feathers

Whoa those green ants are super cool, I've never heard of them before.

Also I read your whole post in Steve Irwin's voice for authenticity.

And you don't remember what I said here, either, but it was pompous and stupid.

How do pigeons in the bush behave around humans? I assume it is completely different to the urban pigeons most people have encountered

The phrase to describe them would be ground-pigeons.They have wings and they can fly any time they like, but they just don't like to fly. even when you drive you car right next to them. They will mill around on the ground and prefer to just walk a few feet away from you (or your car) rather than take wing. I've walked within 30cm of them, sometimes they run a away sometimes they just chill.

Internetjack posted:

the cows belong to a farmer. they basically just roam around, staying close to dams/ponds for water. there are some fences but they're generally in bad condition. once a year the farmer will come round and muster up some of the cows to sell. the rest get left to continue living and breeding. there is very little human intervention in their lives.

What OP said. They can be hella skittish even the bulls which is nice when they decide to wander into your camp (or you inadvertently camp right next to their mineral lick.)

They are a bitch to round up though and Im suprised none of them look ear tagged.

OP, you got any cool bone pictures?

Most of them are branded. There's always some that manage to avoid getting marked.

I'll check for bone pics, I might have some. Cows that get stuck in the mud. I've definitely come across a few scattered bones but the pigs tend to devour anything that dies pretty quickly, bones and all. A whole cow will be demolished in a few days.
