Lydia Crawford, Duke's Daughter
HP: 5/5, Stress: 0, Corruption: 1
Boons: Glass Queen's Bones

Lydia rose from the steaming waters. Massaged scarred white skin and stretched wiry, starved musculature while she dried. Fingers idly stroked where the fungus had adorned her, but the substance had come off in flakes as she bathed. Her flesh seemed hale again, though her skin still crawled when she thought about it. The woman re-adorned winter rags and what remained of torn finery, then gazed at her reflection in the steamy waters. Passable. For her state.

She had not felt this good since... she could not remember. Since long enough by far. The oppressive weight of reality fell back down on her.

She tasted blood.

"Cursed hag."

With anemic lethargy, Lydia made her way back out into the oily waters and through spore-filled corridors. She did not easily back down at a challenge. Thus, she crossed the path of the blooming beast once more.

And once more she felt its lash and saw her skin flower. She swore. There had to be some way of ending this thing's unholy existence.

"Twisted beast."

"C9) Confessional (Ancient, Holy, Safe Place) posted:

Amidst the grandeur of this strange chtonic cathedral, you find this. A quiet box, and a mysterious voice. A perfect opportunity to get something off your chest... This is a safe place... but not for much longer. The smoke obscures the air, and even the voice sounds faint. Better confess quickly, it's getting tough to breathe. [TN7]
  • Servilla - You tell a truth about your feelings or state of mind, and the voice eases you. Lose 2 Stress… but the smoke is too intense. Gain 1 Corruption, and the room ceases to be a safe place. Smoke spreads to C4.

"C10) Where There's Smoke... (Ancient, Fire) posted:

...Smoke is coming through holes in the ground. One of the holes has been covered by a stone. You can feel the heat. It's not safe to breath here. [TN10]
  • Vince - You hold your breath and move out, quickly. Smoke continues to extend to C9.

"D4) Solid Ground (Ancient) posted:

This place looks as if it has been painted by a mad butcher. Fragments of the Late Johnson and Magda litter the marble floor, soaking into intricate whorls and swirls. If you look far, far above, you can see a faint light - probably the base of the sphere set into the floor of the Entrance Hall. A door in the wall leads to another staircase, well lit and invitingly enclosed. If you were falling, [TN20] Entering this chamber gives you 1 Stress.
  • Vincent - You strike the ground and explode violently, spattering the room with gore.
  • Virm - Virm spends a long, long time staring at the bodies before moving on, her ankles caked in blood and gore.

"E2) Pressure Plate Hall (Mechanical) posted:

The narrow tunnel is lined with obvious pressure plates. Spikes are recessed into the wall, but they do not threaten... yet. Dare the tunnel? [TN11]
  • Stanky - You dance your way across safely, but just as you make it some mechanism rachets the walls closer together. You're safe, but what about the others? TN increases by 2 to 13.
  • Renault - The walls press inwards suddenly, piercing your flesh before retracting slightly. Take 1 Wound. TN decreases by 1 to 12.

"E8) Grimacing Statues (Grim, Ancient) posted:

A hall of ghoulish faces. Do their eyes follow you? Impossible... Or is it? [TN6]
  • Johnson - Yes, impossible. Stone can't move, or see.

  • Lionel - You crash into something. Take 1 Wound.

"E12) Wind Tunnel (Natural, Confusing, Mechanical) posted:

The winds blow so hard here... It's hard to move! [TN9]
  • Seth - You manage to fight the wind and make it to the other side. A button recessed into the wall deactivates the sorcerous winds, rendering this a safe place.

"F) Splashdown (Safe Place, Ancient) posted:

You find yourself in a vast hall with five doors. This is a safe place. More of the same swirling architecture is evident, the walls and floors something like slick marble. The water in here is getting tough to move through, and the fumes coming off it are powerful and disorienting. [TN10]
  • Pachel - The water gives off fumes that make you light headed. Gain 1 Corruption. The TN increases by 2 to 12, and the water gets higher.
  • Jesse - The water is fragrant and strangely slick to the touch. You may take a sip to convert 1 Stress to 1 Corruption if you wish. TN increases by 1 to 13.

"G2) Steam Vents (Water, Fire, Mechanical) posted:

Steam pours out of a vent and fills the air with scalding clouds. You need to close the vents, but it'll be tricky. [TN5]
  • Crumbles - You mistime your approach and scald yourself terribly. Take 2 Wounds and 1 Stress.

"G3) Fire And Ice (Fire, Ice) posted:

A machine pumps away in here trying desperately to maintain the temperature. Cables run to the west. It's not working. Heat and cold, together... they should cancel each other out, but it's like you're both hot and cold at the same time! [TN10]
  • Raphael - You manage to find the equilibrium point between the two zones of temperature. For brief moments, it's almost comfortable. You keep moving, slowly.

"K3) Fetid Library (Decay, Water, Safe Place) posted:

Strangely, you find several wet, half-rotted bookshelves. Almost disbelieving, you pick through them. [TN10]
  • Vinny - The things are sopping wet, they fall apart in your hands - and the fragments wriggle all over your flesh like leeches, sinking in and leaving strange marks that might be fragmented words. Gain 1 Corruption.

"J3) Hyphae Highway (Fungal, Decay, Enemy) posted:

Your destination lies downwards, but the chamber is a tangle of mushroom stalks and roots, forcing you to clamber between them. Suddenly, you hear a sound - you're not alone! A great, shaggy thing climbs from branch to branch, closing in on you! [TN15]
  • Lydia - It lashes at you with a hooked hypha, scoring you with a hit that causes your flesh to bloom immediately with mold. Your scream turns into a wet cough. Lose 1 Wound and gain 1 Corruption. Increase TN by 2, capping at 15.

"K5) Fat Man's Folly (Natural) posted:

You have to inch your way along, inch by painful inch. You can barely breath. You can barely see. You cannot do anything but move forward. [TN8 / TN15 if Stress >3]

If you have Corruption, you may roll 1d20 against it as a free action. If you beat it, you reduce your Corruption by 1. If you fail, gain 1 Stress. If you decide against rolling, the Queen will know…

"K6) A Breath of... Air (Natural) posted:

You burst out into an open chamber, all too aware of just how deep you are beneath the frozen sea. It's cold in here, but much drier than it was. This is a safe place. Halfheartedly, you look for something of value. [TN10]

"G4) Ruined Mechanism (Mechanical, Ancient, Safe Place) posted:

Well, this doesn't look right. Long tubes and other mechanisms you don't recognize extend upward into what must have been tall shaft of some purpose, but the walls have shifted and misaligned. Liquid rock oozes slowly through like sluggish blood, painting the room cherry red. You might be able to salvage something, but it would be incredibly dangerous. [TN18] Despite that, the lava flow is slow - it's hot, but relatively safe.

Lydia flinched as the Queen's attention returned ill-timed. Pain bloomed from wound and intrusion both, but to lose focus mid-fight was to court disaster. All she could do was invite her in.

"Do."

The Queen's attention tore at her mildewed wound, scattering the fungus into dust and exposing the red-running cut in her clothes. Lydia herself choked out a taunt at the beast, spitting a phlegm-covered lump that had near threatened to drown her as the Queen began her work. Seeing its own deeds undone, the thing roared and charged. This time, Lydia was ready. She dodged the second whip and with sudden burst of speed latched onto the flailing appendage.

"Your worst."

Looping the seized tendril around her forearm, the woman threw herself off the towering knot of mycelia they'd stood on. Gravity exerted its inexorable pull, tearing at the twitching weapon and the beast it belonged. The monster shrieked in surprise and tried to keep purchase as it skidded across the hyphae, before the limb tore, sending Lydia bouncing off another knot only to land on a third. Somehow she'd kept her feet.

Blood - and what passed for it - spattered the fungi as she discarded the amputated tentacle with a contemptuous twist.

"You nightmare."

I shrieked in anguished surprise, stabbed and alone in the dark. It really hurts! Just when I started wondering how i was going to extract myself from the trap without making my injuries worse, the spikes retracted back into their divots and the mechanically-controlled walls moved apart by a small margin.

Phew! My clothes and my self may have been unjustly perforated by the dungeon's automated defenses, but at least I could breathe and walk again! If only it didn't hurt so much...

Limping slightly, I scampered past a ruined hall... seemingly filled with garbage, only to run downstairs to another storage room... also filled with garbage, seemingly! What did that leave me to do here, exactly? I went further downstairs after passing by a stone enclosure that resembled a table and chairs.

What was this heavy, chilling presence in the air as I descended? When I got to the bottom of the stairs, I saw all the creepy, grimacing statues. They looked like they were happy to see me, like I was an old friend they had seen before...

A clicking assemblage of gears, cogs and other such bits. The wall bears the image of a crescent moon. There's an assortment of buttons here, none of which are labeled. [TN10]
  • Seth - You hear lots of loud clicking, then nothing seems to happen? Maybe something changed elsewhere? TN increases by 2.

[TN12]
  • Virm - Virm is unaffected by the mist as she continues downwards, driven by a force beyond her reckoning.

"G2) Steam Vents (Water, Fire, Mechanical) posted:

Steam pours out of a vent and fills the air with scalding clouds. You need to close the vents, but it'll be tricky. [TN5]
  • Crumbles - You manage to time your approach correctly and close a vent. TN decreases by 5 to 0. The room is steamy, but now a safe place! As you sweat, you hear the Queen's voice in your mind. "Excellent, a compatible subject. Bless you, child." Corruption reduced to 0.

  • Raphael - You burn yourself very, very badly - so badly that the shock of it makes it hard to tell just how bad it is. You take 3 Wounds and gain 3 Stress.

"I1) Lonely Oozemancer (Slime, Enemy) posted:

You stumble into a lonely Oozemancer, who is about to scold you when he notices your supple flesh. "A warmblood," he says "do you mind if I take some samples?" Without waiting for your reply, a hooked tendril reaches out from within his robe towards you! [TN10]
  • Pachel - "Ttthank you. Now, hold still." You try, but soon you squirm and writhe as the tendril forces it's way into your arteries, and the Lonely Oozemancer is forced to restrain you with a Slime. Take 2 Wounds, gain 1 Stress and gain the Sticky Ailment until you find somewhere to clean up. While you recover, they move on - this place is now safe.

Additionally, you feel a simmering hatred from above. Nothing more occurs, but you know you have been marked by the Queen.

[TN15]
  • Lydia - You hack at it on your way out and it howls and flees, but you won't be able to pass through here until it's dead. TN falls by 3 to 12. Old wounds open, further dropping TN to 11.

"K2) Leap of Faith (Heights, Athletic) posted:

You enter a chamber of rough-hewn stone bisected by a deep, ominous hole. A rope flops loosely on the near side of the tunnel, suspended from the ceiling. Very convenient, that! [TN5]
  • Vinny - You take a running leap and soar gracefully over the pit.

"K6) A Breath of... Air (Natural) posted:

You burst out into an open chamber, all too aware of just how deep you are beneath the frozen sea. It's cold in here, but much drier than it was. This is a safe place. Halfheartedly, you look for something of value. [TN10]
  • Johnny - There's all sort of detritus in here, for some reason. Among it, you find a Chaos Wine Treasure

"G5) Grim Golem (Ancient, Enemy, Mechanical) posted:

The cables of the mechanism run towards this thing. An iron humanoid, grim of feature and thrumming with arcane force, bars your path. As you approach, it comes to life, wielding an iron bar thicker than your thigh. Smoke pours from its jaws. [TN15] Weapon use will consume two units of durability.

"K7) On Thin Ice (Natural, Ice) posted:

Your path is blocked by a layer of thin ice. You kick through it, and it shatters like glass... but there's another layer. And another. And it's sharp, and so, so cold... [TN 10]

Can't post for 11 years!
Seth (Location: E13)

Wounds: 4/5
Stress: 1/10
Corruption: 0/10
Treasure:
Canister of Tabula Rasa (Potion, Magic) - Didn't they stop making this in the 90s? You crack it open. It's still clearly refreshing! [As a free action, toss a coin. Heads, recover 1 Wound; Tails, recover 1 Stress]
Trauma Stone (Magic) - This rough-hewn hunk of crystal vibrates with something like anxiety. It just needs to be pushed over the edge... take 1d4+2 Stress to clear an [Enemy] chamber or breach a tunnel between two adjacent chambers in a blast of psychic power.

Boons:
Confident (Psychic) - You feel confident. If you would gain 1 Stress, roll 1d2. On a 2, do not. Does not apply to higher Stress gains - you're not THAT confident!
Velocitized (Magic) - You have fallen a great way and lived to tell the tale. You are immune to [Heights] chambers and may forego the roll inside. Additionally, gain +1 to [Athletic] chambers.

Well... this was fruitless.

Seth heads down to E12, and then Left.

Pachel @I2
Health - 3 remaining
Stress- 8
Corrupt- 5
Red Fascination (Psychic, Corruption) - You are fascinated by blood - yours and others'. When you or another take a Wound, gain 1 Corruption.
Seeming Idol (Artifact) - A tiny clay figurine... It looks just like you? If you would die, instead discard this Idol and gain 5 Corruption.
Slimy (Physical, Slime) - You are incredibly sticky. For each chamber you pass through - even safe places - roll 1d2. On a 1, you must beat that chamber's TN (where this is possible) before you can move on.

Pachel... did not like that. She did not like that at all. But, well, she could feel the power of the corruption taking over her. She would escape from here and find Joss and her child and take over the fashion industry by force if need be!

I passed by those gruesome statues with nary a second glance and shortly thereafter found myself descending the steps with another one of the Queen's slaves - the first I'd seen since diving, as far as I could remember. This one was brandishing a book of some portentous power, and they seemed quite confident as a result its presence. This person also had a peculiar odor about them...

"Ah, well, good luck to you." I said to the man as I stepped into the bizarre curved space we found waiting for us at the bottom of the stairs.

It didn't look terribly treacherous, but looks could be deceiving!

Name: Lionel | Location: E10 -> E11 -> E12
HP: 3/5 | Stress: 3/10 | Corruption: 0/10

And on the third attempt, Lionel's foot found solid ground and an unfamiliar doorway. He rested a moment beside the strange, inert brass apparatus and then followed footprints into a large, empty room with some large fans at the far end. He was about to approach the door at the other end of the room (and a strange red-white powdery mess that lay on the ground there) when he saw the 'prentice, Seth, emerge from a side-room. Lionel smiled at the youth's approach, trying his best to remove the recently-received bloodstains from his clothes and skin.

Two safe rooms, so heading left.
