Crunch Crunch
DDO is a older MMO (came out originally in 2006) based on D&D 3.5 edition. After a few years of operating under a subscription-based model they migrated to a F2P model where new adventures, races, classes and items could be purchased using points that can be either earned in game or purchased.
While the game is on Steam most folks play the game via the launcher available on https://www.ddo.com/

Official DDO Discord is helpful for getting questions answered
https://discord.gg/ZS5Fkfc

unfortunately the free quests code has expired now. i may create a new thread if you guys think we should.

another coupon code to put in is HAPPY14 which grants a free sentient jewel. this can be redeemed through december 31. don't sell it...these are great once you hit lvl 20 and get a sentient weapon.

Why would i play a 14 year old game you ask?
  • It's one of the more unique MMOs and has been consistently updated and the player base is still relatively strong
  • you hate the WoW fetch quest bullshit because this game doesn't have that
  • If you enjoy a challenge they just opened up the hardcore server to everyone
  • It is Linux supported
  • i spent this long writing a post about a 14 year old game and i wouldn't have done that if i didn't want to share it with others because it's freaking awesome ^_^
  • while there isn't an overarching story there are some story arcs that are consistent with D&D lore. It's not just hack and slash or go fetch this and bring it there.
  • character building/leveling system is deep/complex. Combination of Class, Feats, enhancements and Epic destinies can help make each build feel unique.
  • ~400 unique quests and a few adventure areas
  • now is the time to get the game since you can apply the coupon and get all the adventure packs (Which were unfortunately rather expensive considering how old this game is) This take much of the pain away from being F2P and lets you use the points you earn for Races, Classes and other quality of life items
Even as a free to play character you can earn DDO points (25 free for every 100 favor earned) which allows you to gradually unlock account features.
Favor is earned naturally as you progress and grants additional benefits.

Account Types:
VIP - $15 bucks a month (cheaper if you buy a longer subscription)
  • 500 ddo points per month of subscription. There are since things like races and classes you can't buy while you have a subscription though.
  • bonus experience (+20% ...soon to also include +1% for each additional party member up to 5% for a max of 25% bonus xp)
  • faster walking in non-combat areas (nice QoL bonus)
  • first level of shared item bank free (goes away with lapse in subscription - if you buy additional levels of shared bank you will have to buy lvl 1 if you ever let VIP lapse. without level 1 any additional levels are useless)
  • ability to open all dungeons on any difficulty (premium/F2P need to either play "normal" then "hard" then "elite" (or characters on 1st reincarnation can open "hard" and characters on 2nd reincarnation can open "elite immediately)
  • additional character slots
  • can use all races and classes while subscribed (except Favored Soul which must be either purchased or earned with favor)
Premium (anyone who has spend real money on the game) players get additional character slots and a few other benefits that i can't really remember at this moment.

F2P players get a couple character slots and have to buy everything with ddo points (other than the base races, classes and quests)

If you do chose to buy the expansions i would recommend waiting for Black Friday or December Deals as they tend to get pretty massive discounts. They can be purchased with DDO points but it will take quite a long time to obtain that many points. If you do, buy the more expensive shadowfell and underdark and use the ddo points to buy Ravenloft or Sharn

there is a bunch of stuff that i won't be able to get to. The DDO wiki is great though: https://ddowiki.com/page/Newbie_guide
DDO players are generally really helpful and willing to teach new players.

Streamers to watch:
I subscribe to strimtom, axel's ddo channel, and voodu spyce. All three offer unique content. Strimtom shows off many builds and does interviews with the devs at ddo heaquarters. Axel offers more discussion based videos and dives deeps into release notes which I appreciate, he does great "first look" videos too. Voodu does great "first look" videos and playthroughs (his solo raid videos are must watch), but his explanation of sentient weapsons and epic destinies have been the most helpful content I've come across

A lot has changed for this game over the past few years.
Quest Difficulties:
https://ddowiki.com/page/Difficulty
Normal < Hard < Elite < Reaper

Various difficulties exist for each quest. For any non-VIP player you must play normal before you can open hard, elite or reaper. This can be avoided by having someone who is able to open the quest on a harder difficulty. Additionally once you are on your second life you can open 'hard' without playing normal. Third life characters can open any quest on Elite or Reaper.

Playing a quest on a harder difficulty adds 1 level to the quest difficulty, adds additional experience, raises the level of the loot you receive and you earn more favor in exchange for the additional challenge (more or harder monsters, traps etc)

Each difficulty scales differently to the number of party members. Most dungeons are supposed to be balanced for 4 players. Having less than 4 causes the dungeon to scale, while having 5 or 6 causes no additional scaling.

Favor:
https://ddowiki.com/page/Favor
Favor is gained with each quest a character completes, based on the highest difficulty ever completed for that quest. It measures how well respected your character is by one (or all) of 16 different NPC patron factions within the game. Each faction provides rewards for hitting certain levels of favor. Each faction has a patron that gives these rewards (you get an ingame mail from that patron when you are eligible for a reward like ability increases, ability to purchase buffs from a vendor etc.. patrons are identified by a star on the map in each public area).

Favor resets with each reincarnation. Some rewards like races (drow), enhancement trees (Harper, Vistani Knife Fighter) or classes (Artificer, Favored soul) are unlocked on a per-character basis via favor. if you want to buy it for the account you can do so with points.

The number of free DDO points that can be awarded to you is unlimited in theory, but you either have to reincarnate or use a new character to obtain favor again for quests you have already completed.

Save your ddo points for the weekly rotating sales. ddo puts out a newsletter each week with a coupon code for free consumables and announces what the weekly sale is.
Farvor Farming for 100 favor on each server should net you a decent amount of ddo points because of the ddo bonus points for the first 5, 25, 50 favor. at 100 favor you should net 200 ddo points
https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/481237-Favor-Farming

Starting out:
This is a rough guide to get started (partially pilfered from a thread on another message board).
Korthos has traditionally been the noob area but a newer area has better gear and more interesting quests called "Keep on the Borderlands". In addition you can farm 'feathers' in the wilderness area to obtain a mount that can be used in wilderness areas and towns for faster movement. For any lv1-2 characters, Keep on Borderlands has a comprehensive list lv1 named (blue) gear. Most notably is the Giyar's boots of dashing. It is a pair of boots that provide 3 charges of expeditious retreat that make you run 25% faster which will make you feel not want to quit the game. It also has a complete selection of lv2 weapon that can be traded for by collecting ingots of metal from each quest or wildness rare chests. This sets of lv2 weapons include ethereal weapon that hit wraith/reaper/spectres that have a 50% miss chance. So before you can get something that bypass the miss chance, this is the best place to find these ghost touch weapons. The arcane weapons that can be traded here also have the best spell power stat for its level. These arcane weapons stats are generally better than random loot gens you can get even a few levels higher.

Once you reach lv3-5, lost gatekeepers adventure pack (the most recent quests release a few months ago) has quite a bit of the lv3 items that are extremely powerful and useful. Stuff that deserve mentioning are its large selection of useful trinkets that provide various effects usually not found at this level. Again, please go to ddowiki to find more details.

At lv4, in the marketplace, run the sharn syndicate chain (completely different from the masterminds of sharn chain later at lv15). The end reward list are some lv2 weapon called nicked [insert weapon type name]. They are the same minimum level as Borderlands weapon but mainly for melee and ranged. They are a good upgrade that can carry you for while. Also if you haven't gotten the reward from the coin lords of additional backpack space these quests will provide favor that will help unlock that reward. Most of the quests in the Harbor also are around lvl 4-5 at elite difficulty

At lv5+, it is best if you go do Delera's quest chain and finish it completely on any difficulty to grab yourself a voice of the master. It provides 5% extra experience upon quest completion which is quite huge. Delera's tomb is located inside House Jorasco which can be reached through market or airship. It may be useful to play on normal at a lower level to obtain this item. https://ddowiki.com/page/Item:Voice_of_the_Master

Starting at lv3 to lv7, it is also a good idea to complete the assult on splinterskull in the tangleroot gorge via house Phiarlan. It is a very easy but long chain that reuses 2 dungeon maps for the entire story arc. They are old quests so they will be easy if you have a decent amount of current gear or even just random loot drops. The end reward is mostly ok but contains one very important item, visor of the flesh render guards (trinket that provide casts death ward which is very helpful if your character cannot cast the spell natively (arcane caster cannot cast it). You may have noticed items that provide deathblock, which prevents effects that instantly kill like Cloudkill and Phantasmal Killer) but it doesn't prevent level drain. Deathward prevents the negative level drain effects which some monster will start casting on you later (from my experience, it happens a lot around lv13+ when running attack on stormreach chain). Think of level drain as a temporary effect that treats you as a lower level character reducing your HP and spell points and any bonuses that you would get from being a higher level. Deathward is pretty awesome.

At around lv5 to 7, you should be heading to three-barrel cove and do their quests, the items there got updated a few years back, so they are not the best up to date but will be better than some of the random loot gens you find.

At lv6 and lv9, the white plume mountain chain is very good to run. They are quite a funky chain that you may wish to watch a video or open up ddowiki to guide you if you don't mind the spoilers. They provide some of the best lv6 and lv9 weapon, gear and clickies that some of my characters use until lv29. Notable mentions are leather gloves of the snake for trappers as it is an all-skill-related-to-trapping in one item thing. Coalesced coinage for warlocks because of the stacking radiance spell power (insightful) and 4 charisma which is very high at this level. There is also an entire set of helmets called memories of [something] that each provides one of all 6 ability stat depending on which one drops for you. I use them even on my alt new lv18 character sometimes and can run R1 hardest content at level no problem. One important thing to mention is that the lv9 quest white plume mountain side optional also drops death ward clickie. It is bound to account instead of bound to character so even better than the visor mentioned before (and arguably easier to find since it is just an optional chest from one single quest). Their entire collection of weapons are also quite useful.

Once you hit level 7-9 head to red fens in house K and do the chain. It will award you some of the best at level items that also carry useful set bonuses.

Once you reach lv8-10, you should be doing slaver lord chain and try to grab some items there. They are quite good. You may not be able to craft anything without running the chain on elite a few times but even the named drops will service you for a long time. I quite often wear the spinneret ring that is lv8 all the way to lv29 on my sorcerer.

At lv10, it is the time to go to Ravenloft (if you have the expansion which is free to play until Aug 31 2020). Once you complete the into the mist quest, you can go and grab a free powerful lv12 barovian weapon of your choice that will be better than most new players can get their hands on for a long time (you get one per life or character). It is right inside the adventure area that you zone into once you complete the first quest in Ravenloft. Just talk to the caravan guy down the road leading into the village. Ravenloft also has some of the best named gear 'sets' that provide very nice 'set bonuses' if you have a certain number of the set equipped. Now, depending on your character, you will want either beacon of magic set for casters, adherent of the mist set for almost everybody, and silent avenger set if you are rogue or ranged character. Don't worry if you cant get full set, even individual pieces are very powerful and can carry you a long way. If you play with a group and are looking for certain pieces party members will often pass their named loot to you if you ask. What I did when I first came back to the game is run full Ravenloft chain 3-4 times and also focus on specific quests that drop what I needed more. It will not only give enough experience from the quest and 'saga' to take you to level 15. It will also give you a good amount of ravenloft gear. Sagas are groups of quests that provide a really big XP reward or other named loot upon completion of the entire quest series.

At lv14, you can choose to do the house J age of rage chain. It contains quite a selection of items that are useful. They are very complementary to the Ravenloft items and Sharn items we will be talking about next. Since it is relatively older content (less powerful) and too close in level bracket to sharn, you may not find a lot of people farming it at this level but you should have no problem finding a group to run this at least once. The only issue with this chain is the beholder bosses that a lot of players would love to avoid if they can (you can choose to not do them, the required first quest to start the chain does not have beholder).

Now, at lv15, time to head to sharn. Sharn clifftop to be exact. Run the 2 chains and cogs adventure area over and over to get saga and experience and gear. It has even better gear than Ravenloft. Ravenloft sets can take you to lv29 no problem. But sharn sets are even better.

At lv17, you can go to the sharn docks and do quests down there. They also have some of the best gear as well. Although they are less used as most people don't bother with farming these once they have the lv15 sharn sets. Soul splitter sets (sharn docks) are lv17. They have technical better stat, but the difference is minimal with only 2 level apart.

Once you reach lv20, it is time to go back to keep on the Borderlands but this time, the epic version. There is an even wider selection of gear dropping here in epic levels. The epic ingots also provide you with technically speaking, the best lv20 weapons you can get easily (there are some better lv20 weapons, but they are usually raid items such as epic storm and epic sword of shadows that need quite a long time to farm, as in multiple past lives long or months). If you so desire, you can farm the gear here out to round out the missing gear slots that you didn't fill with the sharn or Ravenloft items. KoTB items are up to date powercrept item so they are best at level 20 and 21 and beats up most older content items that are a few levels higher.

At this stage, it is also a good idea to consider farming the wilderness adventure area of Keep of the Borderlands for rare chests that drop feathers. These feathers can be used to exchange for a horse which increases movement speed 80% to 100% depending on if upgraded or not. It is a very big quality of life item that doesn't impact your power but movement speed in public areas and wildness areas. It will be very useful later when TRing or running through really big maps like the underdark or demon sands when doing epic quests. You can find a very well drawn out map and guide on how to efficiently farm these rare drops on the forum by googling.
(/B)
If you don't have Ravenloft and it is still open of all (pre August 31 2020) you can go back to the guy who gave you your barovian weapon got a free lvl 29 sentient weapon and free sentient jewel!!! Do this as soon as you can since sentient jewels are hard to come by) (/B)

Once you reach lv20, also go back to epic version of Delera's tomb for the epic voice of the master (you can get this from playing the normal version again as it gives you the choice between normal and epic). It is one of a kind artifact that can be equipped at lv20. All other artifacts in game are lv29. It will provide quite a distinct advantage if you can fit it into your gear set at this level. You can also use this item in a recipe with the 'Mantle of the Worldshaper' item from Thernal https://ddowiki.com/page/Item:Mantle_of_the_Worldshaper to create an augment "The Master's Gift" which frees up your trinket slot. https://ddowiki.com/page/Item:The_Master%27s_Gift

Join a group, solo, do some stuff and get to level 29.

Once you are close to lv29, you should consider running Ravenloft or sharn chains for their legendary gear. Sharn legendary gears sets are the best but Ravenloft legendary gears are not too bad either, a lot of people still use them for low reaper at lv30. At this point you can also consider legendary gear from legendary version of lost gatekeepers. They are the newest gear so they are extremely powerful as well. Having all three gear lists available will help a lot in gear selections.

Side note, make use of the auction house. It is a pretty easy interface to get used to. Before lv10, and after you have the borderlands weapon (almost guarantee drop for you since it is a trade system). If you cannot find any decent named item and RNGesus hates you, go to auction house for random loot gens. There should be quite a big selection of weapons that will suit your needs. Particularly if they are vorpal weapons or nightmare weapons. These two are to my knowledge, the best random gen effects you can have at low levels.

Last remark. If you are caster, you will want to also run cannith challenges for the best caster items (highest spell power for each level bracket in heroics, lv3, lv7, lv11, lv15 and then 20) you can get. The challenges are available from lv4 onwards all the way to epics. Ring of stalker is also worth mentioning here as quite a large proportion of melee and ranged character can use its effects. Especially the lv15 version starts to carry ethereal which bypasses wraith and reapers 50% miss chance of you are melee. And the gear are exchanged through ingredients gathered so they are definite drops. No RNGesus playing with you. Look for the cannith challenge tutorial on YouTube. They are not hard, but can be frustrating if you have no idea what you are doing.

https://www.mmorpgtips.com/ddo-leveling-guide/ another guide that has some info about quickly leveling. i'd say ignore the stuff about the purchasable bonuses and go down halfway to see the leveling guide.

General Raiding Information

How Do Raids Work?: Raids are quests that allow up to 12 people to enter instead of the standard 6. When completing a raid, you're also placed on a 3 day timer when you accept the quest reward (this means it's very important to get your quest reward right after, not a day later).

There are multiple chests in a raid, but only one Warded Chest (aka Raid Loot chest), which gives each person (on normal) a 1/6 chance of generating a random raid item. On elite the chance scales up to as much as 1/4. The exact amount depends on how much the developers feel the raid scales on different difficulties (titan barely does for instance).

In general the loot policy is: If it spawned for you, it's yours to do with what you like. Loot it, pass it, put it up for roll. However it's common courtesy and strongly encouraged that you put an item up for roll if you're not going to use it yourself.

How Do I See My Timer? /quest will let you see your active raid timers. /quest completions will let you see how close you are to a 20th.

Why Do I Care About A 20th? On your 20th completion (or multiple of 20) of a raid quest, your quest rewards are replaced with a special set. This set is comprised of a randomly generated list of about half the available raid items from that raid. For Hound/VoD this list is so small as to be more like 95%. For the Shroud you get a choice of tomes. +2 by default, possibility of being +3. You can also chose a Cleansing Essence from a Shroud 20th list, which removes the Taint on a Greensteel Accessory allowing you to wear more than one at a time without taking damage.

We are on the Argonnessen server...guild is Order of the Ten Bux
The guild is not very populated but we are trying to rebuild. Getting an invite will be difficult (at least until more active folks are made to be officers)
Get guild buffs once you are off (Snowy) Korthos. Most city zones have a Green Anchor map icon for our guild airship. Use the amenity bar on the top deck to get most of the buffs (though buffs aren't near as powerful as they once were since the resist buffs are no longer a thing)

I don't believe there is an Order of the Ten Bux discord; there is a hardcore goons one that is fairly inactive but it's another way to get in contact with the folks that are in the goon guild.

Crunch Crunch
Character Creation:
Don't use default builds. They are not great. Customize and Google a build and follow it until you understand the enhancements. I will fill this with more information but it is a bit time consuming.

Stats

(Stat - 10) / 2 = your modifier, this is what actually affects things. Odd stats don't provide you with any bonus, but there are sometimes reasons to start with odd numbers. Ideally you don't want any end-game if you can help it. And yes, this can be a negative modifier for stats under 10.

Strength - Attack/damage, this is sizable factor in your ability to hit or do damage to things in melee combat.

Dexterity - Armor Class and Reflex Save, this is limited by the armor you wear. Robes have no Maximum Dexterity limit, but other than that wearing armor can impede the amount of bonus you can derive from this. It’s also used for your ranged attack bonus (but not damage!) in place of strength. Don't invest in this for armor class unless you have something very specific in mind -- it's not really worth build points for 1-4 extra AC.

Constitution - Hit Points and Fortitude Save, you get your con bonus * level in extra hitpoints, this is a stat that everyone should strongly consider. A general rule is to not start with less than 14.

Intelligence - Skill points and Wizard casting. How many skill points you get is based upon your class, but you get one extra, per level, for every int modifier you have. You also need 10 + Spell Level, minimum, to cast as a wizard. Wizards want this maxed, many other classes can consider it a dump stat or low depending. For a wizard this is their bonus to Spell Difficulty Class stat.

Wisdom - Will Save, Cleric Casting, partial Favored Soul casting. A cleric needs 10 + Spell level, minimum, to cast. It is also their Difficulty Class bonus stat. A Favored Soul uses their wisdom modifier for their bonus to the Spell Difficulty Class.

Charisma - Bard & Sorcerer casting, and partial Favored Soul Casting. All three of these need 10 + Spell Level, minimum, to cast. For Bards and Sorcerers it is also their Spell Difficulty Class bonus stat. For Favored Soul it does nothing other than small bonus SP after you have the minimum needed for your spells, not worth raising past 12 or so for a Favored Soul.

Casting stats also provide bonus Spell Points (SP), and each stat is also tied to some skills. This isn't something you really need to worry about though in most cases.

Races (rather than trying to type up a summary of each i will just link to the wiki as it will stay updated)
https://ddowiki.com/page/Races#Human

Classes

A note on roles: Tanking is not like you're used to in other MMOs. You can use intimidate and a shield and pretend you're a normal MMO tank, but there are very few situations (usually raids) where this is all that effective. Otherwise a tank is just someone with good hp and if you can get there without giving up much: some passive damage reduction or AC. For normal questing no one is designated as a tank usually.

Barbarian: Do you like hitting things? Do you like hitting things a lot? I mean over and over don't stop hitting things DON'T STOP SMASHING THINGS IN THEIR FACES THROUGH THE RED HAZE OF BLOOD AND FURY!!!!!
Role: Melee Damage, Tank.
Recommended Races: Human, Dwarf, Half-orc.
Stats: 12 hp/level. 4 skill points/level.
Recommended Dwarf Starting Stats: Str - 18, Dex - 12, Con - 17, Int - 8, Wis - 8, Cha - 6, raise Strength at level up
Recommended Skills: Balance, Spot, Intimidate
Recommended Feats: Power Attack, Cleave, Great Cleave, Improved Crit: Slash, Overwhelming Critical, Two-Handed Fighting Line

Bard: You get to spend most of your time singing songs which are either so boring or so incredible (take your pick) that monsters just stand there in a stupor while the rest of your party beats the crap out of them. Also, you have magical parlor tricks that you picked up to impress the ladies at taverns. And because you sometimes impress the ladies at taverns that already have husbands, you've learned to handle yourself in a straight up fight too.
Role: Crowd Control, Buffing, Secondary Melee Damage, Secondary Healing.
Recommended Races: Human.
Stats: 6 hp/level. 6 skill points/level.
Recommended Human Starting Stats: Str - 16, Dex - 8, Con - 16, Int - 10, Wis - 8, Cha - 14, raise Strength at level up
Recommended Skills: Balance, Bluff, Concentration, Perform, Use Magic Device, Heal, Spot
Recommended Feats: Extend, Two-Handed Fighting, Power Attack, Cleave, Great Cleave, Empower Healing, Improved Critical: Slash, Improved Two-Handed Fighting, Overwhelming Critical, Greater Two-Handed Fighting

Cleric: Do you like praying to gods and killing undead monstrosities with shiny lights? Well boy-howdy, is this ever the class for you. Also I hope you enjoy healing things, because you'll be doing that a lot too. On the plus side, you get to shoot laser beams, call down comets to knock your enemies on their asses, and summon giant walls of spinning blades that enemies just seem to love trundling right into.
Role: Healing, Magic Damage, Buffing, Crowd Control, Secondary Melee Damage.
Recommended Races: Human, Dwarf, Elf, Drow.
Stats: 8 hp/level. 6 skill points/level.
Recommended Human Starting Stats: Str - 10, Dex - 8, Con - 14, Int - 14, Wis - 16, Cha - 12, raise Wisdom at level up
Recommended Skills: Concentration, Heal, Spellcraft, Use Magic Device, Jump
Recommended Feats: Maximize, Empower, Empower Healing, Quicken, Heighten, Spell Focus: Necromancy line, Spell Focus: Evocation line, Spell Penetration

Fighter: You get to hit things. But unlike the barbarian, you get to be tactical about it, using your brains, your smarts, your wits. Which is to say you're slightly more clever than a rock but you've managed to pick up a few dirty tricks along the way to even out a fight when you might be overmatched. Angry ogre lumbering towards you? Knock him on his rear end and proceed to introduce your sword into his face.
Role: Melee Damage, Tanking.
Recommended Races: Human, Dwarf, Half-Orc.
Stats: 10 hp/level. 2 skill points/level. Bonus Feats at: 1, 2 and every even level thereafter.
Recommended Human Starting Stats: Str - 18, Dex - 12, Con - 14, Int - 8, Wis - 10, Cha - 8, raise Strength at level up
Recommended Skills: Balance, Spot
Recommended Feats: Power Attack, Cleave, Great Cleave, Improved Critical: Slash, Two-Handed Fighting Line, Overwhelming Critical

Monk: Monks are masters of enlightenment and serenity, channeling their inner Ki to enable them to perform superhuman feats of strength and agility. Which is a real fancy way of saying they punch the crap out of things using a variety of elemental powers they combine to cause powerful effects. So if you want to shoot fire out of your fists, run across water, leap through the air or use the freaking five step exploding heart technique, this is your class.
Unlock: Free to VIPs, 895 Turbine Points otherwise.
Role: Melee Damage, Tanking.
Recommended Races: Human, Dwarf.
Stats: 8 hp/level. 4 skill points/level.
Recommended Human Starting Stats: Str - 16, Dex - 16, Con - 14, Int - 8, Wis - 10, Cha - 8, raise Strength at level up
Recommended Skills: Balance, Concentration, Spot
Recommended Feats: Toughness, Two-Weapon Fighting, Power Attack, Cleave, Improved Two-Weapon Fighting, Improved Critical: Bludgeon, Greater Two-Weapon Fighting, Great Cleave, Overwhelming Critical

Paladin: Holy warriors devoted to destroying all things dark, unnatural and unholy in the world. Of course, what is considered dark, unnatural and unholy is purely open to speculation and is at the discretion of the burly dude in platemail with a shining sword. Paladins are tough fighters, able to cleave through swaths of foes without breaking a sweat, and if that weren't enough, their gods give them all kinds of spells to make slaughtering everything even easier.
Role: Melee Damage, Tanking, Secondary Buffing.
Recommended Races: Human, Dwarf.
Stats: 10 hp/level. 2 skill points/level.
Recommended Human Starting Stats: Str - 16, Dex - 8, Con - 14, Int - 8, Wis - 10, Cha - 16, raise Strength at level up
Recommended Skills: Concentration, Heal
Recommended Feats: Power Attack, Cleave, Two-Handed Fighting, Great Cleave, Empower Healing, Improved Critical: Slash, Extend or Improved Two-Handed Fighting, Quicken, Overwhelming Critical

Ranger: Friends of nature, companions to all manner of beasts and plants and hahaha who am I kidding. Rangers are racist bastards who specifically pick a group of enemies to hate and get bonuses to slaughtering them wholesale. In order to help them out in their quest to exterminate all life on the planet, they recieve free feats to allow them to dual wield and use bows more effectively. Additionally, rangers get some pretty useful utility spells, including some that help them kill things even better.
Role: Dual Wield Melee Damage, Tanking, Secondary Ranged Damage, Secondary Buffing.
Recommended Races: Human, Dwarf.
Stats: 8 hp/level. 6 skill points/level.
Recommended Human Starting Stats: Str - 17, Dex - 14, Con - 14, Int - 8, Wis - 11, Cha - 8, raise Strength at level up
Recommended Skills: Concentration, Heal, Search, Spot, Balance, Use Magic Device
Recommended Feats: Favored Enemy: Undead, Empower Healing, Power Attack, Cleave, Great Cleave, Improved Critical: Slash, Overwhelming Critical, Quicken

Rogue: Yeah you're not as tough as a fighter and you don't hit as hard as a barbarian. You have less hit points than even a cleric. So why would you want to be a rogue? Because you can learn every single useful skill in the game, and, while your friends are busy getting their spleens stuck full of swords, you get to stab enemies for sneak attack damage. So what you might say. Oh boy, I get to do damage if things aren't hitting me. Well, one of those skills you can learn makes things forget about you, and attack your friends. Which even if you're not trying to get sneak attack damage is still a great party trick. And as for the damage itself? Well, let's just say you will murder the poo poo out of everything. So to recap: you get to be batman.
Role: Melee Damage, Secondary Trap Disarming.
Recommended Races: Human, Halfling, Elf, Dwarf.
Stats: 6 hp/level. 8 skill points/level.
Note: You generally can't sneak attack while solo, making pure rogues one of the worst choices for soloing.
Recommended Human Starting Stats: Str - 12, Dex - 18, Con - 14, Int - 8, Wis - 8, Cha - 10, raise Dexterity at level up
Recommended Skills: Balance, Bluff, Diplomacy, Disable Device, Open Lock, Search, Spot, Use Magic Device | Alternatively drop Balance/Diplo for Hide and Move Silent.
Recommended Feats: Toughness, Weapon Finesse, Precision, Two-Weapon Fighting Line, Improved Critical: Pierce, Improved Sneak Attack

Wizard: So all that reading in some poorly lit dingy room finally paid off. You can now cast magic missile! How proud you must be! But wait, you just gained a few levels and now you can create walls of fire on the ground that incinerate everything. Oh what's that? You've gotten some more spells now and learned some forbidden necromantic arts and are now a lich that can easily instantly kill entire rooms full of enemies with a single spell? Surely no self-respecting wizard would turn to the forbidden arts of necromancy in order to gain incredible godlike power. That would just be wrong.
Role: Magic Damage, Crowd Control, Buffing.
Recommended Races: Human, Warforged, Elf.
Stats: 4 hp/level. 2 skill points/level. Bonus Feats at: 1, 5, 10, 15, 20.
Recommended Human Starting Stats: Str - 10, Dex - 8, Con - 16, Int - 18, Wis - 8, Cha - 8
Recommended Skills: Concentration, Spellcraft, Balance, Heal, Spot, Use Magic Device, Move Silent or Repair
Recommended Feats: Insightful Reflexes, Maximize, Empower, Quicken, Spell Focus: Necromancy line, Spell Penetration line, Heighten

Sorcerer: Books and scrolls? Screw that stuff. You're better than a wizard because you don't need none of that there book learnin. You gain spells naturally as you level up, and sure you might not have as many different spells to choose from as one of them book-learned wizards, but you're inherently better at magic than they are. You cast spells faster, have more magical energy to draw on, and can attune yourself to the very elements themselves, gaining incredible power.
Role: Magic Damage, Buffing, Crowd Control.
Recommended Races: Human, Warforged.
Stats: 4 hp/level. 2 skill points/level. Double benefit from SP increasing items. Higher base SP than a wizard or cleric. Faster casting and less recast than a Wizard.
Recommended Warforged Starting Stats: Str - 10, Dex - 8, Con - 16, Int - 12, Wis - 6, Cha - 16
Recommended Skills: Concentration, Spellcraft, Balance or Repair
Recommended Feats: Maximize, Empower, Quicken, Spell Focus: Evocation line, Heighten

Favored Soul: You're a special person. A very special person. You see, some god decided that you were a pretty cool dude (or dudette) and has decided to make you one of their champions. You have a stronger connection to the divine and as such gain various bonuses related to the god that has chosen you, as well as having more magical power to use on spells. So essentially you're the envy of clerics everywhere. Oh and you get wings. Magic angel wings that let you leap distances and look super cool. And a little glowing light ball friend that hangs out over your shoulder and shoots laser beams at everything, kind of like the shoulder mounted cannon that the Predator has.
Unlock: 2500 Total Favor or 895 Turbine Points.
Role: Healing, Magic Damage, Buffing, Crowd Control, Secondary Melee Damage.
Recommended Races: Human, Warforged.
Stats: 8 hp/level. 2 skill points/level. Double benefit from SP increasing items. Higher base SP than a wizard or cleric. Get a short distance forward teleport with Wings at level 17.
Recommended Human Starting Stats: Str - 8, Dex - 8, Con - 14, Int - 10, Wis - 18, Cha - 12
Recommended Skills: Concentration, Heal, Spellcraft
Recommended Feats: Maximize, Empower Healing, Quicken, Empower

Artificer: You get to be Megaman. No, seriously. You have a cool mechanical dog and an arm cannon that you can charge up which has various effects, much like boss weapons from Megaman games! Other than that, artificers, as their name might imply, are tinkerers and dabblers in mechanical devices. Many use repeating crossbows, though some people do use melee weapons. Additionally, artificers get quite a number of unique spells, several of which can be used to increase damage, bypass damage reduction of enemies, or provide useful defensive buffs. Being tinkerers, they are skilled at disarming traps and also are the best at crafting items, giving them a bit of a unique edge over other classes in that regard.
Unlock: 150 House C favor or 995 Turbine Points. Favor unlocking is annoying, and you won't do it until you're 20+.
Role: Ranged Damage, Buffing, Secondary Magic Damage, Secondary Trap Disarming.
Recommended Races: Human, Warforged.
Stats: 6 hp/level. 4 skill points/level. Awesome mechanical dog companion.
Recommended Human Starting Stats: Coming Soon
Recommended Skills: Coming Soon
Recommended Feats: Coming Soon

Druid: So you like trees? Dogs? Bears? Being a ranger not quite fufilling your nature-hugging needs? Then turn that frown upside down and make a Druid! With the powers of Mother Nature at your beck and call, you can call down lightning, freeze your foes solid, turn into a dog and bark bark bark until they go "AUGH SHUT UP ALREADY!!" Or if that's not your thing you can also turn into a big ol fat bear and chill out doing bear things like getting hit a lot and smacking the poo poo out of skeletons that stole your honey.
Unlock: VIP or Standard Menace of the Underdark Pack or 1495 TP.
Role: Healing, Magic Damage, Melee Damage, Tanking, Buffing.
Recommended Races: Human, Half-Elf, Half-Orc.
Stats: 8 hp/level. 4 skill points/level. Awesome wolf pup companion.
Recommended Human Starting Stats: Str - 12, Dex - 10, Con - 14, Int - 8, Wis - 18, Cha - 8
Recommended Skills: Concentration, Heal, Spellcraft, Use Magic Device
Recommended Feats: Maximize, Empower, Empower Healing, Quicken, Heighten, Spell Focus: Evocation

Warlock: [WIP]Be a magical machine gunner!
Unlock: VIP or 1395 TP.
Role: Magic Damage, Buffing.
Recommended Races: Human, (Blade/War)forged.
Stats: 6 hp/level. 2 skill points/level.
Recommended Human Starting Stats: Str - 10, Dex - 10, Con - 14, Int - 10, Wis - 8, Cha - 18 (8 str/dex and 16 con also good)
Recommended Alignment: True Neutral will let you use any pact. Fiend is recommended, but any can work.
Recommended Skills: Concentration, Use Magic Device, Spellcraft
Recommended Feats: Maximize, Empower, Quicken, Spell Focus: Evocation, Greater Spell Focus: Evocation, Force of Personality
Recommended Spells: (1)Expeditious Retreat, Jump, (2)Blur, Invisibility, (3)Displacement, Dimension Door, (4)Evard's Black Tentacles, Teleport (or scrolls and whatever), (5)Mass Protection From Elements, Finger of Death, (6)Wail of the Banshee, Power Word: Stun
Recommended Enhancements: Passive Shield from Enlightened Spirit, Cone Shape/Consume/Stricken/Hungers from Soul Eater, Penetrating Blast/Strong Blast/Eldritch Ball/Planar Focus/Spell Focus: Evoc from Tainted Scholar

Multiclassing

Multiclassing needs to be planned out from the start pretty much. You can have up to 3 classes when multiclassing, and as this is a 3.5E based game you spread out your 20 levels between the classes, it’s not like 2E where you just level slower.

If you want to multiclass I strongly suggest you ask for advice here or on the official forums before going forward.

Reincarnation
(snagged from the wiki)
Reincarnation enables players to leverage their existing progress with one of their current player characters and allows them to change certain decisions made in that character's advancement:
Lesser Reincarnation (LR) allows a character respec, retaining current character level
Heroic (HR), Racial (RR) and Iconic (IR) reincarnation allow the creation of a more powerful hero, starting from level 1 (as a non-iconic) or level 15 (as an iconic)
Epic Reincarnation (ER) provides more character power and allows a character respec in the current class, returning the character to level 20

Past Life feats are acquired through all forms of Reincarnation except Lesser Reincarnation.
Racial Reincarnation awards Racial Past Life Feats
Iconic reincarnation awards Iconic Past Life Feats
Epic reincarnation awards Epic Past Life Feats
https://ddowiki.com/page/Past_Life_Feats

the past life that is chosen for heroic past lives is based on the dominant class or in the case of a tie, the dominant class is the first listed on this list (the one with the lowest number):
Barbarian
Bard
Cleric
Fighter
Paladin
Ranger
Rogue
Sorcerer
Wizard
Monk
Favored Soul
Artificer
Warlock*
Druid*
Alchemist

Skills (stolen from an old DDO post but still relevant)

Insane

Use Magic Device
Lets you use scrolls/wands that your class may not have access to. Must-have for rogues and bards. Highly recommended for pretty much any build with skill points to spare for it.

Great

Balance
Opposed check versus your opponents trip DC for you to stand back up. You get a roll every 2 seconds after being knocked down. Resisting a trip is a str/dex check, so you'll get tripped but get back up quicker with this skill. As a bonus, with 40 (modified) balance you'll not get knocked down by the Titan anymore.

Concentration
Allows you to continue casting a spell even if you take damage during the casting. 1d20 + Concentration is opposed by 10 + Damage Taken + Level of Spell Being Cast. Quickened spells do not suffer a chance to be disturbed when hit, so it's viable to eschew this skill on Sorcerers/Favored Soul if you keep quicken on permanently, but that's not something you do often. This also determines the maximum amount of Ki a monk can hold without degeneration.

Disable Device
Only available to those with at least one rogue/artificer level, it allows you to disable traps when you find the control box via the Search skill. Thus allowing your party to continue safely through the trap. Many traps can be avoided through timing or jumping, so while it's not a required skill it can still prove very useful (especially while TRing and doing elite quests for the experience bonus).

Heal Only Great for Clerics/FvS, Good for Ranger/Bard/Paladin, Skip It otherwise
As of The Shadowfell Conspiracy, increases your Positive spellpower 1:1 for each point.
Increases the amount you and your party heal when you're near them at a rest shrine. Also allows you to use healer's kits to stabilize an incapacitated person and allow them to slowly regenerate health until they are up again. It's much better to simply use a Cure Light Wounds wand charge or even just let them bleed out and take them to a Resurrection Shrine. The benefit is too small to be wasting skill points on.

Perform
Increases Sonic spellpower 1:1.
Bard only skill. Required for some of the bard class abilities, and the bard Fascinate ability gets it's DC from this ability. The DC is 1d20 + Perform skill, meaning at low levels it's not so hot, and at high levels even without items your DC will be decent, and with items it's sky high. Might as well max this if you're a bard.

Search
Well worth keeping maxed as a rogue-like character. Not worth it otherwise. Allows you to find hidden doors, and more importantly trap boxes. For secret doors, other characters can use clicky items with Detect Secret Doors or Wands. Even with a rogue, I'd encourage keeping a clicky on you for doors as it's just faster. True Seeing only lets you find doors up to DC30, so if you can get your skill beyond that, it's worth considering investing in this skill for epic levels.

Spellcraft
Increases Fire, Acid, Cold, Force, Electric, Light/Alignment spellpowers 1:1. Great for any full caster.

Tumble
1 point - Great, beyond - Okay. Passively decreases the amount of damage you take from falls, but featherfalling makes this so-so at best. Actively tumbling allows you to roll when you move while shield blocking, and just 1 point is enough to allow this. This roll also lets you move at full speed while under the effect of movement debuffs such as slow or shallow water. At 31 modified skill you can do back flips and side dives. With 36 modified skill you can do front flips. Not recommended for raising, but if you have the free points and it's a class skill and you want flips go for it. Note: You need both a base skill of 1, and a current skill of at least 1 to be able to do rolls. Armor check penalties can lower you below this, but dex modifier can counteract this. It's usually not a concern, as most people stop using armor late game or can easily counteract the penalty, but it's something to know.

Good

Bluff (Great for Rogues, especially solo)
Single target, makes the target vulnerable to being sneak attacked for a few seconds, as well as giving you a deagro buff for 10(?) seconds. Diplomacy is going to be more useful in a group setting usually but Bluff is great for when you're solo as while it does have a slight activation time, you'll put out a lot of damage in the few seconds of sneak attacking and the deagro can help with not getting agro in a group even after the auto sneak attacks wear off.

Open Lock
Allows you to open (some) locked doors and chests. Some require quest objective keys instead. This skill requires at least one rogue level to obtain. Is also the lowest priority rogue skill because you can try an infinite number of times on a lock, and rolling a 1 has no negative effect unlike with Disable Device (where it can blow the box up, rendering the trap permanently unable to be disabled). So letting it lag a little is okay, but you want to make sure you don't have to spend an hour trying to roll a 20 to unlock something if you can help it.

Decent

Diplomacy
Area Effect skill that lets you shed agro. It has no activation timer and affects all targets in range (short range AE). It also has occasional use in conversations. Handy skill to consider on a rogue character, less so on others.

Haggle
Vendors give you 10% of an items base value (Brokers 15%), this skill gives you an extra 0.25 per point. So 8 points means vendors will now give you 12% (Brokers 17%) of an item's base value. A great way to make extra money over the lifetime of your character, but often a tough fit for non-bards due to other more actively important skills. Also doesn't effect the amount of plat returned via Deconstruction.

Hide
Allows you to, in combination with the Move Silent skill, sneak around mobs and not agro them. It takes a lot of knowledge of how the skill works to properly abuse this, but it has the potential to be a very useful skill. That said, it's very low on my list of priorities.

Intimidate
Small range Area Effect taunt. 6 second cooldown, keeps them locked onto you for 3? seconds. Okay if you have spare points floating around, and it is AE, but often agro is achieved through massive damage, not this skill.

Jump
Increases the height (and therefore length) of your jumps. This skill has an effective hardcap at 40 (buffed) points. With the jump spell providing +30, heavy investment in this skill is not recommended. A few points if you really have nothing to spend them on is nice, but you can easily drink a jump potion if your buff fades to make it over most obstacles.

Move Silent
See Hide

Spot
Allows you to passively detect the presence of secret doors (but does not aid in finding them) and traps. Also allows you to tab target as well as see a faint outline of hiding creatures if you are within a certain amount of their Hide skill. As a rogue it's a solid skill if you don't know where all the traps and trap boxes are, and for the quests where they're randomized.

Skip It

Listen
This skill is largely superceded by the spot skill. It lets you see little red circles around hiding mobs feet, and they often have lower move silent than hide, but it doesn't let you target a stealthed mob like spot would.

Repair
Increases Repair and Rust spellpower 1:1. Might be okay on Warforged Sorcerer or similar.
As heal, but only works on warforged characters.

Swim
Allows you to swim (slightly) faster and/or against stronger currents. Also increases your underwater breathing time. Underwater action items make this skill almost totally irrelevant and the places where it comes in handy are so few as to not be worth the expenditure of skill points.

Placeholder for discussion on Feats

Good Starting Builds:
Melee
Melee builds are pretty strong starters because they don't require high stats to overcome DC (difficulty class) to cast stuff like phantasmal killer.
Dwarf Barbarian https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/512407-THF-Dwarf-Barbarian
This was my first build when i came back to the game. it's pretty strong particularly with the changes to two hand fighting (they removed glanding blows and added a concept called strikethrough which basically determines how often additional targets take damage). This is a very sturdy character with some self healing capability. Hirelings are still a positive when not running with a group.

Paladin is really strong now but i haven't played one since they made significant changes to the enhancement trees. if anyone has a good build to post please feel free.

Ranged:
Solid Arcane Archer build. I think there were some changes to ranged but i am not familiary with whether they impacted this build. https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/469213-quot-Strimtom-s-Acid-Arrow-quot-Maximum-Bow-DPS-F2P-new-player-Friendly

Casters:
Only thing to note is metamagic feats can be turned on by clicking on the icon in the toolbar or right clicking the spell in your toolbar and setting it on or off. This can help with managing damage and spell points.

Spell like abilities, or SLAs, from the enhancement trees can have metamagic feats added with no additional mana cost. This is the real benefit of SLAs

Wizard vs Sorc?
Wizards primarily focus on INT as a spellcasting stat whereas Sorcs use Charisma. Wizards can 'scribe spells' to their spellbook expanding their spellbook to encompass all the spells you can find scrolls for. Sorcerers on the other hand can only get new spells by choosing them during a level or paying a trainer to swap out spells (can only be done 1 spell at a time with a cooldown and it costs plat)

Wizards are more flexible but generally less powerful.

Pale Masters (undead wizard) are popular choices for Wizards but they are very DC focused so they may not be best for a first life where you don't have gear saved up in your bank.

I don't have a ton of experience creating builds but in my ~2 yrs experience playing the game these are pretty solid and still work well in the current state of the game:
Fire Sorcerer https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/506304-The-Best-Way-To-Level-Fire-Sorcerer-Build?p=6221078

Support/Caster:
Swashbuckling Trapper Bard [url] https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/459103-Bard-Trapper-for-new-players[/url]
swashbuckling is a single weapon fighting style that requires weapons that take advantage of weapon finesse (daggers are pretty ideal because they often get doublestrike, but shortswords, light maces and rapiers also work)
depending on the path you pick in your enhancement tree you can choose bucklers, orbs (more caster focused) or nothing in your offhand. each style adds certain bonuses and unique abilities.

Favored souls can only be used after unlocking or purchasing so i'm not going to speak to them. they're like the Sorcerer equivalent of a cleric.

Clerics are good but i am not sure i would recommend them for a first life as they can be a bit lackluster in their dps and many folks bring their own healing to dungeons now. Clerics are a lot more fun now than they were in the early days of DDO when people would complain if you did anything other than heal (any Spell points towards damage spells were heavily frowned upon). With the addition of domains clerics are significantly better but as many of the best cleric spells in both light and dark domains require DC to hit they aren't the most effective. Feel free to disagree but these are my thoughts

Gameplay placeholder

Your skill Hotbar can be frustrating if you don't have it configured well. I suggest doing some work getting it customized. Maybe watch a video on YouTube and get some suggestions.

One thing you should know... If you level up an enhancement you needed to replace the icon in your Hotbar to utilize the leveled up version

New skills or spells can be dragged into your Hotbar from the character sheet (C). There are tabs for skills (bluff , diplomacy, open lock, haggle, disable device), enhancements, feats, and spells.

The quests adapted from classic modules are some of the best content in the game. Not that there aren’t decent missions the devs made but those were classic for a reason.

I'm glad the code offer goes till August. Their launcher/patcher is some pretty oldschool slow poo poo. I think it rebuilds the game files like 14 times.

I'd hate to do this through Steam.

Unfortunately plying the game in steam is not as good as their standalone. The high res packs are worth it but take forever. One issue that will likely but the crap out of you is they haven't fixed UI scaling for 4k

Feel free to ask any questions. The game is a hell of a lot more fun in groups. When you open a quest open your group to others using the lower right hand toggle in the quest entry screen. You can do it with the social panel as well. People are happy to teach in game if you say you are new.

all these cool races and classes locked behind paywall are really turning me off not gonna lie

do Fighters get cool abilities or is this game THAT faithful to the D&D that all I can expect from this is auto-attacking, and maybe toggle Power Attack or do a Whirlwind Attack at some point?

Cognates! They stay crunchy, even in milk!
Fighters will typically get cleave and great cleave from feats, and then depending on which enhancement trees you put points into you'll get a few active attack skills and action boosts. A lot of melee classes boil down to that, but they usually end up being fuckoff powerful blenders in exchange.

I agree to an extent but you will earn favor pretty quickly through normal play. Most classes other than Artificer, Alchemist and Druid aren't really behind a paywall and those classes aren't all that OP. You can even earn Artificer but that's more challenging on a first or second life. Races aren't that impactful other than maybe warforged for self-healing casters. The stat bonus isn't all that much of a game changer...Maybe their racial enhancement tree makes gameplay slightly different but again not a gamechanger. Favored soul and Drow elf are easily unlocked with regular play.

If you do the 100 favor farming on each of the servers (it's boring but can teach you about builds) you can get 200 DDO Points per server doing that (you can get much more but the first 100 favor is quick to get and will net you 200 points) and that can get you the Shadowfell and Underdark Adventure Packs and maybe a race or class.

Fighters are more jack of all trades. i'd say barbarians are more interesting personally. Doing a tempest ranger (2 weapon fighting) is another fun build to try. Fighters do get heavy armor which is certainly nice. Barbarians are only medium armor unless you take the feat. Fighters will get free martial feats (for all the exotic weapons)

I own Druid and Artificer and still haven't used them yet.

I've only done a little but while it does have a bit of D&D wizard supremacy, fighters do actually have buttons to press

do Fighters get cool abilities or is this game THAT faithful to the D&D that all I can expect from this is auto-attacking, and maybe toggle Power Attack or do a Whirlwind Attack at some point?

I'm new to this game over the last couple of weeks and prefer melee. I found this barbarian build and have been enjoying it up to level 7. In combat you have quite a few buttons to push: trip (single target cc), sunder (single target armor debuff), cleave (frontal aoe), supreme cleave (full? aoe from barbarian enhancement tree), sprint boost (temporary speed buff to gap close), blood tribute (instant temporary hp), rage (temporary damage buff), and melee power boost (another temporary damage buff). The second post in the thread gives an updated feat priority (two hand fighting feats were improved recently, basically give you more damage and strikethrough which gives you a chance to auto-cleave) as well a feat list for picking human. I have played with different enhancement builds as it is a trivial amount of currency to respec. I prioritized getting to blood tribute to survive elite dungeon difficulty and maxing out blood trail (makes supreme cleave free instead of costing hp) for extra aoe in large packs, something like this:

1 - FB0 Die Hard; FB1 Power Rage I
2 - FB1 Power Rage II; FB2 Sprint Boost I; FB2 Blood Tribute I, II
3 - FB0 Frenzied Toughness; FB2 Blood Tribute III; FB3 Supreme Cleave I, II
4 - FB3 Supreme Cleave III; FB3 Blood Trail I, II, III

I had also tried rogue first from reading about traps and range superiority. Learning the trap system was nice, and rogues are powerful with their kiting, I just do not like ranged play as much. Also, the builds I found used Inquisitor or Harper enhancement trees (unlocked with a lot of favor or you can buy them), as well as stat tomes I did not have access to as a new player. On the barbarian I have died a couple of times to traps, but typically can bulldoze ahead with blood tribute.

There is a customize button. Don't pick the 'named' builds. They are crap.

does anyone currently play a paladin that can dispense some information on their pros and cons? I have never played the game before but I will google any terms I don't understand, thinking about playing this here old game and I'm 100% dead-set on paladin

also other important questions about paladins:
-can I use a big mace and not be a detriment to my group
-how about halberds
-can I detect evil as part of a quest objective and not just to home in on skeletons in a dungeon
-can I get one of those plate helmets with the stubby beak shaped visor thing

edit: why does the patcher keep erroring out, I ran it as administrator and changed the game folder to not be read only and it still doesn't let me get into the game

Paladins are pretty sturdy and have ability to self heal and buff. They are a solid class that has recently been reworked to make them stronger as they had been underpowered. They have one of the best past life feats (healting amplification) so they are one of the better classes to play early.

Generally speaking you would want to pick your weapon based on your feats which are chosen with level. There are feats that give various bonuses to these specific damage types. I would recommend following a build until you are comfortable with the system

There are piecing (shortsword, rapier, dagger, pick), blunt (mace, mail, quarterstaff, hammer), and slashing (axe, longsword, greatsword, falchion). There are a few exotics I am forgetting of the top of my head. I think ranged fits into piercing as well

Also with clerics, favored soul and paladins the diety grants a favored weapon that increased hot chance and damage so you would try to build within those constraints to optimize your character.

Feats and enhancements can be changed but have a cost to change in ingame currency or other items (ebberon dragonshards for feats and platinum for enhancement trees).

Not sure about your launcher issues. Might be worth googling with your windows version. Could also try steam and see if you have more luck

effortpost is very much appreciated, when I get time later today I'm gonna google that error code (that the launcher won't let me copy/paste), when you say follow a build you mean an in-game prefab build right?

I'm excited to jump into an mmo I know dangerously little about, I'm specifically going to try to get my bearings through a combination of reading the posts in this thread and asking people in-game for the best(?) possible experience. from what I understand, my ten billion hours of time spent in all the bog-standard tab target MMOs have not prepared me for this game in the slightest so this should be a fun adventure

Oh hell no. Always use the customize button

this was the build i did when i did a paladin life before the changes to the class. (it's now U46 so a build from U29 has potential to have things that need to be shifted around but if you're willing to take some liberties with a build it's a good starting place)

looking to see if any updated ones exist.

this build looks promising. i'd replace the tiefling/aasimar with human. you'd get an extra feat (you can add "stunning blow" which is a great ability. In most case the race just helps min/max better.
with human you'd have to do 14, 14, 14, 8,8,16 so you'd have less charisma starting out. 16 is still respectable but won't be quite as good

with enhancments you could just change the tiefling tree to the human tree and add 2 to charisma to compensate.

this build uses 1handed bludgeoning weapons (warhammer) so "followers of ontar" is the deity that gives you favored weapon for that.
i also would remove quicken spell and put something else since paladins aren't really casting enough spells to make a metamagic feat worthwhile in my opinion. you could maybe add another one of the defensive feats to make yourself more survivable. i'm not sure why that build had perfect two weapon fighting unless shield is considered a weapon. Either way this is certainly something that could take you to 20

i'm not the best at creating builds yet. if someone who knows more wants to weigh in feel free.

It's tempting to rush through quests but try to enjoy them on your first play through. If you open your group to pubbies put 'flower sniffing' in the title so you don't have people rushing you through. Then you can read and enjoy the experience.

If you haven't already open the ddo store ingame and enter the coupon. That's also where you put the weekly freebie coupon

also enter this one in once you have a character you want to keep. HAPPY14
this will get you a free sentient jewel. it's only redeemable on one server and can be redeemed through the end of the year. don't sell it by mistake. put it in your bank (shared bank if you get that) until you use it. sentient jewels are for 'sentient' weapons which are certain weapons for lvl 20+

I've seen this feat taken on two hand fighting builds as well. I think it's because it provides 5% doublestrike even if you aren't using two weapons.

Had this same problem. Don't gently caress up your computer like I did.

Go to your DDO folder -> Right click -> Properties -> Security -> Advanced

Note the user that owns the folder, it should probably be something like DESKTOP\Administrators. If it's not that, change it to that. If it IS that, change it to your Windows user account. Don't click anything else. Click OK and then go to the tmp folder in the DDO directory and drag any files out of there into your DDO folder. Then go into Security and change things back.

Don't gently caress around with the ownership of folders and files too much though, you can apparently seriously gently caress up your PC (which I did after reading bad advice on how to fix this issue).

Much appreciated with all the info again! I finally got into the game but before I roll my dude I just want to ask one more thing that isn't covered in the link to the build, the character creation screen says I need 11 wis to cast first level paladin spells but this starts me with 8, it looks like I get +wis from gear later but how does that work at low levels? Do I just not cast anything at the start?

Paladins don't get spells immediately and when they do have very few spell points (maybe enough to cast one buff). By the time you do have enough points you should be able to get Some wisdom gear in a quest or auction house

Spells become more useful at like 8 or so

I haven't played since some time after the paladin pass, but Quicken and Empower Heal used to be really good. Quicken means year CSWs will always land so it is a defensive feat, and if you can fit in Empower Healing Spell they'll land for more.

No idea if it's still a good idea on a first life or if something changed mechanically, but I'd for sure consider quicken for the level 15 slot if you're using self heals a lot. By then you should have an idea of what playstyle you like and can lean into it.

Low level casters get better with the extra spell points from Sorcerer or Favored Soul past lives. Alchemist gives SP too but that’s a paid unlock.

Just want to mention that resellers pretty much always have the xpacs for 50% off. It's not as good as the potential 75% off on Black Friday, but if you wanted the standard MOTU for the greater tome of learning right away then it's not a bad deal today as opposed to waiting until November. Also, there's usually a summer sale, not as big as Black Friday, but worth keeping an eye out for. Not sure if they'll still do it with the current freebies being so generous though.

I'm doing Invitation to Dinner in the Ravenloft adventure pack. I did it on Normal, cleared optionals with no problem. I'm redoing it on hard, and I'm basically stuck inside the optional `Engage Strahd again` fight. I've killed 2 champions, and upwards of 60 spirits, but nothing is happening. I don't remember what happened in the Normal clear...and nothing on the Internet is helping. Am I just screwed? Anyone have any ideas on what to do short of dying/recalling and losing a chunk of xp?

Unfortunately there is the occasional bug in the game. I would suggest recalling and re entering if a big red door doesn't show up. When the game first started that had enough staff for petitions to fix stuck quests.

That dude’s build makes me kind of sad. Like, you don’t need traps. Max CHA, get decent levels of STR and CON, maybe a little WIS for early spells (don’t need higher than 12), then build for damage. Use the extra human feat to pick up Bastard Swords and 2H fighting maybe, go enough into KotC for the pally cleave and Divine Might, then go Vanguard.

Bring a wand of Resist Element and absorb pots if you run into traps.

Also bring a tower shield and equip it if you need to face tank a trap. Generally Barbs fighters and pallys can tank traps if you aren't on to high of difficulty

Paladin doesn’t get Tower Shields for free, not sure that matters for usage vs traps. Getting THF feats, Shield Mastery feats, Imp Crit, an exotic weapon feat, and Stunning Blow is going to put you pretty tight on feat points if a pure paladin, not sure where tower shields would fit.

Edit: Also as paladin, first thing enhancement points should be spent on is Sacred Defender for more Lay Hands uses.

I've been using https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/451677-Sacred-Vanguards-%28aka-Revisiting-S-amp-B-Paladins-for-New-Players%29 as my 1st-life/1st-real-character-ever and has been fine (the first build, full pally human). Now it's a bit out of date, so the enhancements aren't 100% accurate anymore. But it's about 85% right, and has served me well so far (as of level 13 through 1/3 of Ravenloft) as a solo F2P player.

Id say that doesn't happen super frequently. Often in that quest people finish it first then do death. It's not required for completing. You just get an extra chest and sometimes get killed. So finish first then go back and do it

I highly recommend this game. It’s probably the most fun MMO I’ve played in the last 5 years. The level of character customization is unreal, the combat is fun and very diablo-like, the quests are fun, reincarnating is a cool mechanic that encourages my constant need to try new classes.

My main tip would be to join the main discord, this community is hugely helpful and there is too much to learn on your own. Just take the game one step at a time and ask questions as you go.
