Just get a passport. They're already Real ID compliant, and they weigh about an ounce so you have to be a colossal wiener to complain about having to carry one to the airport. Also, you can do the process at your local library to avoid lines at the post office, and you get the fringe benefit of being able to leave the country whenever you want to.

I had to renew my license two years ago, and I was extremely grateful to be able to tell them I wanted a regular license since everyone else in the building was trying in vain for three times as long to appease the Formlord for Real ID compliant licenses.

In some states, the only difference between a complaint and non-compliant license is that the complaint one requires two pieces of mail proving your address instead of just one. You still need proof of name, birth, legal residence, etc... There is no sense in not getting a complaint license unless you really can't come up with one extra piece of mail with your address.

The US should just add a permanent address field on the back of the passport card and bingo: instant, federally issued, compliant ID for everyone.
