Things seem stable enough to move forward for now.

Our results are:

1) A cheap ZERO win.
2) Slim gets the match
3) We're aiming for Crime Buster to turn heel eventually.
4) We'll test Devilfish's chemistry with both partners over the next couple of shows and see what happens.

It's time for January, 2020's show, ZEN Way of the Dreamer!

In the pre-show, Devilfish and Aukland Raider beat Crime Buster and Urban Fox when Devilfish pinned Fox after a Fish Finger Shuffle in 7:41. Devilfish really carried this match – his performance rating was a 58, when the next highest was Raider at 28.

Rating: 37

Our opening match was a tag match between Ferdy and the Flea and The Ghost Hunters. Ferdy and the Flea got a couple of hope spots, but Mister Hyde pinned Flea with The Cleansing at 7:48. This was the Hunters’ second defense of the ZEN Harmony title. Ferdy Lloyd was really off his game tonight, but the Ghost Hunters provided bonuses for having excellent chemistry together and for both being tag specialists. The individual performance ratings were: Strange 44, Hyde 40, Flea 27, Lloyd 24.

Rating: 37

A vignette was taped showing HalloWarped, Toady, and Guru Vishni causing trouble by stealing the protective wood chips from a neighborhood playground. HalloWarped is a good improviser, but Toady isn’t. Vishni helped both of them this segment.

Rating: 43

The next match was a four-way match between Azazel, Booster Boy, Pink Spider, and Vertigo. This was a match with a lot of high flying. Vertigo picked up the win after pinning Azazel with a Rader Legdrop at 11:51. The individual performance ratings were: Spider 49, Vertigo 46, Booster 36, Azazel 28.

Rating: 43

Next up was C-W-A against Killer B. Killer picked up the win with a pin after hitting the B-Sting at 9:21. The individual performance ratings were: Killer B 49, C-W-A 44.

Rating: 48

Cyanide and Damian Dastardly cut a promo about Vertigo and Cyanide’s plan to destroy him. Dastardly got a bonus in this after introducing a new catchphrase that instantly got over with the crowd. This should help him out for a few months at least. Cyanide was proven to be a good improviser.

Rating: 49

Dastardly then grabbed the mic and talked about his own plans for ending the career of Killer B. Dastardly did well here improvising, and the catchphrase helped him here too.

Rating: 51

Kalliope Woodchuck next defender her ZEN Conceptual championship against Lerone Slim. This was a very back and forth match, but Woodchuck ended up getting the pin at 12:25 with her Wood Chipper finisher. This was her first successful defense. Woodchuck was unfortunately off her game here, and it hurt the match. The individual performance ratings were: Woodchuck 37, Slim 36.

Rating: 37

After the match, Rekha ran into the ring and started trash talking Woodchuck as Slim got to his feet. Woodchuck turned her back, and Rekha and Slim attacked her. After a couple of minutes, Buckminster Snark ran in and chased Slim and Rekha off. Woodchuck and Snark stared at each other for a moment, until Woodchuck rolled out of the ring without looking back at Snark.

Unfortunately, this was a mess. Slim, Woodchuck, and Rekha all struggled without a script. Rekha was also hurt by being asked to talk in a segment that went five minutes.

Rating: 28

We cut to a pre-taped promo where Halloween Knight sits in a dark room and talks about his plans to stop the Alien Armada by cutting it off at the head – specifically, the head of their leader Karrg the Conquerer!

Rating: 41

Our semi-main event is a trios match, with Halloween Knight, Devilfish, and Crime Buster teaming up to face the Alien Armada’s Karrg the Conquerer, Man O’ War, and Deathwatch Beetle. The match was stopped at 12:18 after Karrg hit Buster with his finisher, the name of which I can't find right now, multiple times, causing the ref to stop the bell. Devilfish debuted a new comeback spot in this match, which will help his psychology out in the future.

The individual performance ratings were: Devilfish 60, Knight 55, Man O’ War 46, Karrg 42, Beetle 27, Buster 24. Despite that high rating, Devilfish was off his game in this match.

Rating: 46

After the match, the Armada use the number advantage to continue beating Knight and Devilfish. Suddenly, the lights go out. When they come back on, Knight and Devilfish are out of the ring, leaving the Armada staring at a ghost! A ghost with many eyes! The ghost starts attacking the Armada. Man O’War slides out of the ring, while Karrg shoves Beetle at the mystery man. The mystery man locked Beetle into an armbar while Karrg escapes. With Beetle laid out, the mystery man takes off his sheet to reveal that he’s… Boo Smithson!

Unfortunately, Smithson was somehow set to have a 0 overness in New Zealand before this. I’ll have to edit that in the database.

Rating: 32

The main event is Pumpkin Jack vs. ZERO for the ZEN Master championship. This is a great back and forth match, that really emphasizes the story of Jack challenging ZERO after years of being separated from him. Late in the match, the referee is hit by an errant Jack elbow, knocking him down. ZERO takes the opportunity to hit Jack with his title belt. This knocks out Jack, allowing ZERO to lock in his patented Holding Out for a Zero submission. The referee comes to and sees Jack is unconscious while in the holding, leading to him ringing the bell and awarding ZERO the win.

The individual performance ratings were: Jack 54, ZERO 50.

Rating: 52

The show’s overall rating is 45. We did get dinged for the fact that at least one of our rivals has better music production, broadcast quality (even though we aren’t broadcast anywhere???), live event experience, and production values. Despite all of that, we did gain popularity in New Zealand.

I was given the opportunity after the show to give a speech to our talent. I decided to be nice and praise a handful of our workers. I pointed out Devilfish as a good example. I praised Pumpkin Jack’s great performance. Finally, I gave Rekhka encouragement – I didn’t put her in the best spot to feature her skills. All three were pleased.

After the show, we got an email from ZERO.

“Booster Boy wore some bargain basement gear that totally robs him of his presence – and there was a time that Booster Boy had more heel presence than any guy on our roster! Also, he doesn’t get it when working a crowd. Fire the kid and find someone who does know how to work.

ZERO”

Weirdly aggressive! Booster was far from the best worker on our show, but he also wasn’t the worst.

There’s also talk on our forums, https://www.themeditativestateofprofessionalwrestling.net about how the Way of the Dreamer show has gained prestige. After a poll, our fans came up with an oddly exact determination that its importance is now “above average.” Forums are weird!

Assorted news for the rest of January:

ZERO did an interview where he declared that he’s carrying the company on his back and that no one in the company is on his level.

Kalliope Woodchuck and Urban Fox have started dating! Aw, young, wholesome love.

Pink Spider is changing his working style from luchador to high flyer. I’m not really sure what the significance of this is!

USPW launched a new TV show, “USPW Wrestling Entertainment.”

APW held their OzFest show. It got an overall rating of 48 and drew a sold out crowd of 1,000 fans.

DIW held To The Extreme. It got an overall rating of 46 with a crowd of 207.

There was an independent show in Brisbane that was main evented by Dazzler defeating Lloyd Banks in a match rating 23. The show was a 18 overall. No one really impressed me enough off of this to hire them.

Not directly important to us, Lady Lotus of 5SSW has been spoken to by police after leaving several threatening voice mails for the 5SSW booker, DEVIL Karube.

There’s only one news item before our next show, February’s Way of the Scholar: Manfred Marx, who founded Aussie Rules Wrestling (which was bought by Australian Pro Wrestling), has left the wrestling business.

Backstage at the show, Devilfish drew doodles of people on the roster, which brightened the mood among the roster.

Our questions are mainly going to focus on the future of our promotion. It’s February; the season ending show (Way of the Warrior) is in July. Including the show we’re prepping for, that’s five shows before the season finale, when we should blow off our biggest feuds.

I’m confident that the storylines centering on Alien Armada and the potential romance between Snark & Kalliope can run until July.

Our other three big storylines right now are:
Cyanide vs. Vertigo – heat 34. This hasn’t had a match yet in our playthrough. I’m sure it’ll get above 35 when we do. This started in October of last year, but I’m not sure how much of an effect that has on our heat rating.
Damian Dastardly vs. Killer B – heat 38. Again, no match yet in this playthrough. It started last September.
ZERO vs. Pumpkin Jack – heat 50. This started in December. Having that match last month really boosted this up.

Remember that our goal heat for a storyline to be hot is 35.

My plans for Way of the Scholar’s main event is a trios match between Cyanide, Damian Dastardly, and ZERO against Vertigo, Killer B, & Pumpkin Jack, with Jack getting a clean win against ZERO to continue that storyline and set up Jack’s next title match.

Which, if any, of these three storylines do you want to extend until July? We should be able to blow any off on the next show if we want to.

I’ll add that of these three, the only one that I have a very strong opinion on who should win is Dastardly. Killer B is about as good of a worker as Dastardly, but Dastardly is much more charismatic and a better talker. I think he should get the benefit of a storyline win here.

ZERO/Jack could go either way; the benefit of ZERO winning would be it solidifies his heel character. The benefit of Jack winning would be that he would be a top face and could face either the Alien Armada or Skullduggery heel stables as the ZEN Master champ.

For Cyanide vs. Vertigo, it feels like Cyanide should go over as the leader of Skullduggery. But if we want to position Skullduggery as a lesser heel stable than Alien Armada, or if we want to set up Dastardly overthrowing Cyanide as the leader of Skullduggery, a Vertigo win could help.

As a recap, here’s the questions I need you to answer.

1) Which feuds of these do you want to extend until July? Cyanide vs. Vertigo, Damian Dastardly vs. Killer B, Zero vs. Pumpkin Jack. You can choose as many as you want; I’ll go on a simple majority in each case.

2) One option you have when talking to wrestlers is that you can ask them to either increase their body size or become more muscular. This will take a month or two, during which time it can negatively affect their in-ring performances a bit, but can increase their star quality and other minor ratings. It doesn’t appear to negatively impact morale, but workers can opt to not do whatever you ask them to. Do you want to ask everyone on the roster to increase their body size, become more muscular, or neither?

2) I think that Damien Dastardly could do with putting on a little more size. He's got bucketloads of charisma and star quality so it might not end up mattering but he's the type that you'd want to make your figurehead anyways.

ZERO vs Jack shouldn't keep going until July. Have ZERO beat him again, either cheaply or clean, then they can both move on to other challengers. If there's still plenty of heat after a second match, do one more and have Jack get screwed by whoever he feuds with next, and move on to that.

Have ZERO do an occasional promo about how he squashed that Pumpkin (and work in how a Pumpkin is a squash, and have ZERO refer to him as Squash Jack as an insult. This could be a good heel promo to do against Jack after their last match) as he continues to retain the title. Pumpkin Jack goes through a rough patch and we run a storyline about him not being sure if he's able to win when it counts (not a Jack losing streak, but with him losing some matches to people he's beaten in the past, or who it seems like he should be beating). We make sure to give Jack enough T.V. time to keep a good amount of heat on him, and we keep him from losing all the time and cooling off that way. Then Pumpkin Jack can win a battle royale main event to get a title shot in October, debut a Jack o"Lantern persona complete with a big pumpkin mask (that breaks dramatically when ZERO hits a finisher or even better lands a cheap title belt shot, exposing one of Jack's eyes through what looks like a vertical slash in the mask). This mask debut happens when Jack beats ZERO for the title at a Halloween themed show.

Jack winning the title in October solidifies him as a top face and gives him two personas/gimmicks to work with (possibly three, see below), and ZERO is firmly solidified as a top heel who also picks up some clean wins along the way, to show that he doesn't have to cheat to win but will still do it when he has to.

Hopefully ZERO's rematch vs. Jack after the October match will let us break 70+ in heat, if all goes to plan, which is pretty impressive when our top guys are making below $300 a night and we're presumably putting on shows in gyms. I want to set up to a big payoff that will let us hit double the expected amount of heat, I'd see that as a major success.

I'd also be fine with going a full three faces of Foley with this and having regular Pumpkin Jack, Pumpkin Jacked as he gets in great shape (could do some workout vignettes) and nears his Royal Rumble win (this also has makes his worse in-ring performance during his time gaining body size or muscle part of our storyline, and has it happen when he's not in the main event spotlight), and Jack o'Lantern who can only appear on a show during the month of October or on a day with a full moon. TEW probably won't like these gimmick changes, but it should gives us plenty of room to keep Jack's character interesting for years to come, and if one of these gimmick/personas is a huge hit with the crowd we can change plans and just keep him in that hot gimmick for a long time, and only change to a new one when he needs a fresh story direction or they stop responding to his character. If Pumpkin Jacked is a big hit, we can make Jack o'Lantern a comedy persona down the line, instead of something more in line with Finn Balor's Demon or Wyatt's Fiend.

Anyway, that's the madness I've been repressing as I've been observing the "WWE blew up" TEW thread and discord.

It’s time for our February show, Way of the Scholar!

In the pre-show, we had Ferdy and the Flea against Devilfish and C-W-A. Devilfish and C-W-A didn’t particularly have great chemistry. This means we’ll be pairing Devilfish with the Aukland Raider.

Again, Devilfish stood out as the biggest star, and he got a bosot from his hot new move. Our individual ratings are: Devilfish 60, C-W-A 42, Ferdy Lloyd 26, Blue Flea 26.

Rating: 43

We open the show proper with a promo by WarpJump, HalloWarped and Toady. They didn’t really say much, but both HalloWarped & Toady improvised well, and their manager Guru Vishnu helped as well.

Rating: 46

We then cut to a promo where the unlikely trio of Cyanide, Damian Dastardly, and ZERO hyped their main event match. ZERO didn’t improvise well, but the other two did.

Rating: 40

Our first match is Kalliope Woodchuck defending her ZEN Conceptual title against Azazel. Kalliope won in 10:06 with the Wood Chipper. Unfortunately, they didn’t have good chemistry – they just didn’t work well together.

The individual ratings were: Kalliope 34, Azazel 23

Rating: 31

We now cut to a backstage promo, where Bruce Strange and Mister Hyde hyped themselves. They both really struggled with improvising.

Rating: 34

Our second match is Aukland Raider against HalloWarped, which HalloWarped won in 10:16 with a Warp Speed. This got something of a weird reaction since both are currently heels.

Individual ratings were: HalloWarped 48, Aukland 30

Rating: 42

We now have a promo where the Alien Armada talk trash about the alliance facing them: Boo, Halloween Knight, Devilfish, and (for the night) Urban Fox. Fox is teaming with Knight against Laguna and Deathwatch tonight.

Man O’War improvised really well, but Deathwatch & Laguna really struggled with improvising.

Rating: 28

Our next match is Buckminster Snark vs. Lerone Slim, which Snark won in 11:49 with a Snark Bite. This was fine, but nothing special.

Individual ratings: Snark 42, Lerone 37

Rating: 39

However, after the match, Rekha enters the ring and Lerone teamed with her to beat Snark down. This hurt the storyline that’s going on between these all.

Rating: 32

Vertigo, Pumpkin Jack, and Killer B teamed up to cut a promo to hype the trios main event. They all improvised really well.

Rating: 38

This was followed by a match where Halloween Knight teamed with the young Urban Fox against the Alien Armada team of Deathwatch Beetle and Laguna the Loyal. Knight got the submission win over Laguna at 8:31 using his Pumpkin Patch hold.

Individual ratings: Knight 55, Deathwatch 27, Laguna 18, Urban 17

Rating: 38

Finally, in our main event, Vertigo, Pumpkin Jack, and Killer B teamed up to defeat Cyanide, Damian Dastardly, and ZERO. Jack won the fall at 24:17 after pinning ZERO with an Orange Bowl.

ZERO was really off in this match. This put more heat on the Cyanide-Vertigo & Dastardly Deeds storylines.

Individual ratings: Dastardly 56, ZERO 51, Jack 51, Cyanide 50, Killer B 47, Vertigo 45.

Rating: 48

Overall rating: 41

This show did not help or hurt our popularity.

After the show, I gave a speech where I pointed out Devilfish as a good example, praised Damian Dastardly for having a great performance, and told Laguna that they could do better. Dastardly and Devilfish were pleased. Laguna wasn’t “too concerned with your speech… for now.”

I also asked Pumpkin Jack to get more JACKED. He said no as he's not interested in changing his body at this point in his career. :smith:

And Way of the Scholar now has above average importance.

A few more notes as we wrap February up:

5SSW – the top (and only meaningful) joshi promotion in Japan - has grown to small size, and we’ve now convinced them to let us accept their workers on excursion. The same exact thing happened with EX2010, a smaller Japanese promotion that focuses on junior heavyweight wrestlers. This makes three companies that we accept workers on excursion from, joining the much larger WLW.

Deep Impact tried to make a video making fun of Australian Pro, but the video was so bad that everyone – even APW die-hards – turned on it.

APW had a show with a sell out crowd of 1,000 people and an overall rating of 57. DIW’s monthly show had a crowd of 205 and an overall rating of 44.

RAW just does weekly TV shows, and their last four bounced between 72 and 74.

Puro super junior legend Super Joshuya announced he was leaving the business. He had retired from the ring in 2017.

The subscription service WrestleWorld launched in the U.S. and Canada. It’s an online streaming service that will help independent promotions reach a larger audience.

SWF, which was the biggest promotion in the world at one point, has fallen to medium size, which hurts their reputation and surely the owning Eisen family’s egos. They are still the second most popular company in the world and the second richest.
