It does look a little like a Google logo for a goatse-themed app. Maybe it's the divided ring that makes it look like something you could pull, uh, open.

A) Sikkim, before India took it over in 1975;
B) South Yemen - wouldn't have known that if I hadn't fallen down a wikihole looking at Yemeni flags yesterday;
C) One is the United Arab Republic, but I think is currently the Syrian flag too; the tricolor I don't know.

Bolivia in the top left above Chile. That one is probably Ethiopia.

The one that is throwing me is the one just to the left of Mexico. The first three colors make me think Armenia, but it's sitting on a fourth green bar.

Thanks both. Never occurred to me that Yemen was split in East and South :bang:
I, too, was thinking UAR, but it doesn't fit alphabetically (I would've expected it to be Forenede Arabiske Republik anyway). Ethiopia makes sense, though; I understand Danish well enough to figure out most of this, just not enough to instinctively think "Ætiopien".

As for the one before Mexico, that's Mauritius.

Same as the one that's mixed Cyrillic/Latin. I'd guess it's referencing the ethnicity and place separately for some reason? Or else the Kazakhs don't call their country Kazakhstan.

It's Kazakh SSR in kazakh and Kazakhskaya SSR in russian.

The latin is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ya%C3%B1alif which replaced arabic (which few people were literate in) and was replaced to russify differentiate the language from turkish. The one they're currently switching to is new and I think supposed to be one letter/letter with diacritic one sound.

The SSR construction is already russification. In (modern latin) kazakh it should be Qazaq Keñestik Sotşialistik Respublikasy. The USSR at various points made people say "sovet" instead of the kazakh word that literally translates to the same concept as a soviet, as in a workers' council. Last year they settled on some diacritics including the spanish n with the thing, pronounced the same way and everything. Used to be gn like french. :eng101:

(all this is iirc)

So in another thread, someone posted a fun story that had a flag to go with it.

Cessna posted:

Submarine USS Bowfin destroyed a Japanese bus and heavy crane with a torpedo. Citation.

The bus was parked on a pier at the time. The Bowfin claimed the victory and put it on their battle flag:

And since it's bound to come up, the French flag represents a Vichy freighter off the coast of then-Saigon.

So I went down a whole thing looking up some other submarine battle flags. For various reasons, I often like to try to find pictures of the physical flags if I can for these obscure flags.

"angry fish ready to gently caress you up" seems to be a fairly common theme for a lot of these flags, but I thought the one in a sweater was funniest.

Trying to stuff so many symbols into a flag breaks the rules of flag design, but in this case all the extra symbols are mainly there to brag to others about all your accomplishments, so if they can't make it out because it's too busy, then they at least know that the ship with that flag has more under its belt than they can keep track of (and maybe being around the US flag so much teaches bad habits). These flags are made by "amateurs", not by symbology fans, but by relatively young enlisted dorks. They do what they think looks cool, and sometimes don't even really have the technical skills to render the images like they want to.

The place I found the most of these flags was an old website last updated in 2008. Godspeed wherever you are old independent website maker. :911:

He's still around, and if the site hasn't been updated it's probably because he'd been managing websites for like half the West coast's US submarine veteran group chapters.

nice, that's definitely one of the more distinctive and cool looking ones in the kind of snooze top batch. Glad to see Pocatello finally changed their tragic Graphic Design Is My Passion flag to something a little more normal. Maybe Provo will catch on.

My favorites are the ones that look like other types of signs/packaging. So many of the bad ones look like they're signs for hospice cares, funeral homes, or nonprofits. Odessa meanwhile looks like a sour cream label and Richfield looks like a hotdog brand.

Really love the label across the river on the Springfield township flag, too.

SlothfulCobra
Mar 27, 2011

I love the mIami township flag that has to clarify that it's in Ohio, unlike the most well-known Miami, but then it also has to further clarify its county because there's 5 other Miami Townships in Ohio.

I do wonder what people will think of all these fancy aesthetically pleasing vexillologist-compliant flags in a decade or so, whether they will encourage people to take more pride in their locality and give them more of an identity. Or it could go the other way and maybe if these places put more emphasis in these minimalist flags to be their symbol everywhere, then that could lead to the place having less recognition since the flag won't really be recognized by anyone who doesn't already know (and in that sense, Flags might not be good replacements for other symbology like seals). Nobody's recognizing this thing waving on a pole unless they've been told multiple times.

And often the world outside of acceptable flag rules can turn out some interesting things.

I believe it was public submissions in addition to public voting, hence the clumping at the top and bottom of the distribution; the people who were most motivated to submit were the folks with flags they were proud of, or folks who had something to mock.
