I'm just going to say it

I don't get hands on mechs they make no sense. Giant robots that punch each other are dumb.

Battletech seems to mostly understand this but I occasionally see some with giant robot hands? I dont get it.

I finally found it. At long last here it is: The Wrongest Post

Holding back in the name of 'realism' with mecha is always a losing battle, because the concept is inherently ridiculous.

Now, you can have realism as an aesthetic; treating your mechs like military hardware, which a lot of mech stuff does, even ridiculous anime and stuff like Zoids. Like the Gustav above, which is basically just a giant robot truck, but has personality, a distinctive design and a clear purpose. Zoids New Century even does something similar with the Hovercargo as the mobile base, which vaguely resembles a giant snail.

Ghost Leviathan has the right of it, and in that spirit here is to me the peek of realism as an aesthetic:

There's only one robot in Eva and it was a piece of poo poo.

Pretty rude thing to say about Rei tbh

It was lame as hell though when the Gypsy Danger had a rocket in its elbow but it didn't lead to a rocket punch.

some friends of mine used to play this fighting game that was like Mortal Kombat but it was with gundams instead

I always picked ball gundam because it triggered them because they all insisted that ball gundam wasn't an actual gundam

my argument was they called it ball gundam in the game which makes it a gundam and the game's producers clearly were the authority on what is or is not a gundam

gundam nerds are the worst

that's why ball gundam belongs at the apex of the pantheon of gundams

Was it this game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AflEnp0Mu30 ?

Definitely always preferred mechwarrior-style mechs to anime ones

Many of the first mechwarriors were anime designs that were used under questionable legal circumstances. Though most of those designs have now been phased out their influence on the general aesthetic remains. Mechwarrior-style mechs are anime ones.

My recollection is that Battletech attempted to license the designs in good faith, they just got shafted by the person selling them the license, or something like that.

This is my understanding as well. It's worth noting though that the Atlas, which is not part of the Unseen, has art that is pretty obviously traced from the Scopedog. Not my image but:

How has this thread gotten this far without someone mentioning GETTER ROBO.

Shin Getter is one of my favorite mech designs, if not my absolute favorite. Specifically the manga version though, all the adaptions mess with the design in ways I don't like.

The sound effect of the high pitched mechanical whine when they are scooting around also is part of what endears me to it

The Votoms director made another mecha show, Panzer World Galient, and the main robot in that also has foot wheels and makes the exact same sound.
