Agree but also disagree, in that the genre is mostly used an aesthetic today based on current beliefs of what was cool in the 80s. They'll have megacorps but not to make any kind of statement on current trends of, say, media corporations growing increasingly big or ways antitrust legislation is bypassed, but instead simply because it's "part of the setting" along with neon lights and whatnot. So modern cyberpunk could be relevant, but usually isn't and on the contrary often seem to suggest the retro future hellworld is/was gonna be cool as hell.
