If your parking brake doesn't work, get your high school football team's O-line to sit on the trunk. I can't do burnouts in my Leaf, there's two levels of traction control, and one is undisablable.

He didn't ask "is it a good idea to do a burnout in a fed car. I used to do neutral drops in my V6 auto Mustang, never broke the tranny but I did poo poo spider gears a couple times.

You should be able to do a burnout with brake torquing rather than a neutral drop to initiate it.

My neighbour spotted me being a sweaty gently caress riding around on my mountain bike I got 20 years ago and took pity on a giant riding a tiny bike. Threw me the keys to one of his cars to use until I get the Commodore unfucked (it's a simple alternator change, received replacement today), but organising the auto sparky to borrow his Tech2 for the ECU firmware upgrade and remove the battery saver mode. EDIT: Man, tooling around in a little Mazda 323 like a clown car is quite fun around town. I have to drive it with the window down so I have elbow room. Whoa we're half way there. Jesus gently caress this year has been hard. It's loving terrifying how seriously nobody is taking the pandemic over here. We're all doomed. Pretty sure my wife is going to want to continue with the August holiday we booked in Jan, I kind of don't blame her because she's going stir crazy having no time to herself, no excuse to leave the house and having to school the kids while I'm swanning off to work every day. The idea terrifies me though.

Keep the fact that this is aberrant, strange, uncharted in mind. Make sure you take care of yourself, your own mental well being. And then do the same for your loved ones. This is hard, and it's going to be hard for a while. I'm looking at my wife WFH, my kids largely, if not completely, schooling from home in the fall, I'll be teaching "asynchronously." That means we're all in the same house almost all the time. I love my family, but none of us are used to this. Random July rambling, but keep your mental state in mind. It's okay to feel all the negative feelings, but don't let them overwhelm you.

BigPaddy posted:Can’t die until I do burnouts in the Grand Prix, guess I should pull my finger out and get the drive line in it this weekend. That reminds me I have done, but haven't filmed, a burnout in my Cutlass. I only have first gear, but that's plenty. With the open diff and old, dry-rotted tires, it'll do monster one-tire fires, even with the highway gears. I should do that next time I move it around. Mind you, a burnout was what started the transmission loving up. Still no idea what happened there. Just freewheels if it shifts past first. Got the new garage door opener mostly installed before I ran out of steam from the heat and humidity. Just need to install the new safety sensors, really. In other news, we're hosting a former schoolmate of my daughter's whose mother kicked out of the house because she's... I don't know, nuts. He's a good kid, as far as I can tell. Decent grades, didn't get into trouble (not that she let him do anything ever - very strict and relatively sheltered from the universe.) Like, he says that they removed his bedroom door, for some reason. Every time I've interacted with her, she seemed like a controlling bitch towards him. At any rate, they kicked him out at 18, shortly before he finished high school. They did put him up in a hotel until recently, and he did graduate. He's looking for a job and into college, has some savings, but has no car. Once his hotel was up, we agreed to let him sleep on the couch for a few days until he could find a group home or roommate situation. That was going fine - he was supposed to move in today. Except the owner of the room he was going to rent, who of course also lives in the house where the room is located, came up as exposed to COVID-19 on Monday, and is now in quarantine for 2 weeks. So, the reason I have one kid is because I didn't want two, and I *definitely* didn't want two 18-year-olds. Wouldn't be so bad if a) I didn't have to work from home, and b) my wife is now home this week with a severely sore throat this week. Jesus Christ those two, like most kids, loving heterodyne when together and just get louder and louder, ignoring any requests to quiet down. I finally blew up at them yesterday and literally told them they were loud as hell and to shut the gently caress up. Feel kinda bad about that, but they finally got the point. I know I've had it lucky through this COVID crap so far - it's just me and my daughter at home, usually. Guess I'm getting the full shelter-in-place experience now, plus a little. On the plus side, he has a positive effect on my daughter's Asperger's. He has a knack for getting her to do stuff she "don' wanna". Just... teens. Oy. I'm 50. I like it quiet-ish. Not sure what to do, now. I didn't really want a house guest for another two weeks. We don't have a spare room, and he sure ain't sharing my daughter's room, not that she would let him. Don't want to kick him out on the street. He's... not terribly motivated, but not a bad kid. Definitely has some growing up to do with respect to being on time, and, uh, not sleeping through alarms. Kid sleeps HARD.

Hello July. June was good. May has been good. Summer is here; our state caught on fire Saturday night and even though there were 30MPH winds with gusts up to 40-50mph the heavens were merciful and there was an absolute deluge of rain for like two days - super weird for July and everything got under control. Closed out June at the office and we outsold last year June by a very large margin which was welcomed. Be safe and stuff, wear your masks. This is not a big ask and I don't get why some are having such a challenge with this.

Darchangel, I know it's rough, but good for you for letting him stay until he can get something lined up. Meanwhile in Austin, we've seen a doubling in positive COVID cases in .... 10 loving days. I'm following the mayor's FB page, he's been posting regular livestreams about this stuff. I think we're still the #1 COVID hotspot in the US right now. Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio are also on the top 5 list, but Austin is #1. This isn't something I want my city to be #1 at. Paper products are already becoming scarce, FWIW. We got plenty of store brand toilet paper (not a lot of name brand, but some), and absolutely zero paper towels. The only paper towels we have on hand are the low end store brand (we have multiple tiers of store brands) that are heavily scented. Left side is the paper towel side. Nothing at all except for the low end lavender scented ones (why the hell would you add fragrance to paper towels? we can't get rid of the drat things). Right side is TP. Well stocked on TP for now if you don't mind store brand or an off brand (the name brand stuff is nearly gone before open, thanks to the personal shoppers coming in at 3am to fulfill online pickup/delivery orders). I dropped by the store closest to the house on my way home, and the only paper towels they had were the "good" store brand ones, but only in 12 and 24 packs. Did I mention the personal shoppers are coming in at 3 am now? We're already seeing a huge spike in online orders, and the number of orders per day is already making the panic buying look like a joke. One of them told me we already had over 400 orders for the day; hopefully they put a cap on orders per day again. randomidiot fucked around with this message at 17:25 on Jul 1, 2020 |

I too prefer quiet over cacophony, but as my children have gotten older and now spend significant time out of the house, I often find the lack of noise to be a touch sad. Pre-covid it was getting very common for me to come home from work to an empty house every Friday evening. Just me and the dogs and boding sense of irrelevance.

Folks have done me solid favors in the past, and I've been very fortunate in my life (I'm not wealthy or anything, but I'm not hurting, and have everything I *need*, if not want), so I'm just paying it forward. Besides, if my daughter likes him, despite social anxiety and Asperger's, he can't be a terrible dude. FWIW, my daughter never left the house *before* C-19... but she's usually pretty quiet. The plus side of them being noisy is that she's actually interacting with a human being and *enjoying* it. Normally wouldn't have been too much of an issue, but that particular day, it was grating.
