Sorry but Episode 2 was wack. That stepfather obviously did it. Changing all the locks and throwing out the son the day after a disappearance only makes sense if you are 100% certain the missing person ain't coming back. Also, having a timestamped receipt for a gas station at the other side of town sounds like what a perp would do on a crime show. Although I do agree that there might be more to Pistol that isn't being shared - the guy had a giant rifle tattoo on one arm. And Episode 3 is kind of a lame mystery. Either they missed a body in the mountains or he's in a village somewhere and they don't want to spend resources looking for him. Yeah, the new series is clearly taking more inspiration from all the true crime series on streaming services the last several years than it is the original program. Which is too bad because I would love to watch corny dramatizations with modern production values.
