I like MLB's approach of just pretending the Astros don't exist in all of their marketing. Unfortunately, that's about the upper limit on how far MLB is willing to go to punish cheaters.

This is a perfect time to make out a deal. They're going to get a ton of TV money this year from political advertisements and everything should be back to normal by next April. The TV money will still be there and if there's a work stoppage, they're not paying Mookie his money.

Meanwhile, free agency is going to be artificially suppressed because every ownership group will be crying poor for the next 5+ years because of "losses sustained by the pandemic." There's no other time they'd be able to get Mookie, a generational talent, for this cheap.

Teams, especially ones like the Dodgers, already have the money to spend. It's not like revenue from the political season convinced Friedman that now, 4 months before the election, he can finally spend.

Mookie is phenomenal and was already looking at a 30MM+ AAV if not 35 because that's what superstars are being paid now. 10/350 is only cheap in the sense that stars almost never get paid what they're worth or else Trout would be earning over 50 a year right now easily but no team would pay that. If I recall correctly, Boston offered him a 10/300 extension and he countered with 12/420; 10/350 seems about right, not cheap.

Anyways, I still think the timing is odd with everything else going on. I don't see how anyone is confident things will be back to normal by next April, whether it relates to baseball or America in general.

Moustakas was scratched from the lineup and placed on the IL for undisclosed reasons after not feeling well.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/07/reds-place-mike-moustakas-on-injured-list.html

It's wild to me that this is something that the players and coaches are even allowed to have any input on. You'd think it would be league doctors or some kind of central authority that actually knows what is medically safe or unsafe making the call to play or not.

It kind of seems like that is by design. Any responsibility that MLB can lay at the feet of players/coaches for not wearing masks, not distancing, deciding to play anyways when your starting pitcher and two players just tested positive, they will.

Any team being forced to go to Florida should straight up tell the league to gently caress off.

So if the Marlins decide to play, it's not MLB's decision but if the Nationals decide to not play, it is MLB's decision. Is that right?
