More pictures of the Rangers' ballpark

video:

It got roasted by wise guys on Twitter:

Anyway here's some more pics. I like the brick pillars, and the roof is cool from an engineering perspective. Would look a lot better covered in anything but sheet metal. Also soooo many girders or w/e, I wonder if popups will be hard to see with the roof closed?

Somebody talk me into being excited for baseball.

I don’t want to be a wet blanket here but I just can’t get enthused given the public health situation. Just seems really far fetched to me that it’s gonna happen at all or feel at all real without fans, and with the shortened season.

I feel the same way. I think there will be outbreaks in camp and the season will be cancelled before it starts.

And it didn't have to be this way. MLB could've cancelled in May. Instead, the players and owners spent months arguing over money in a time when millions of people are unemployed. Great optics there. Both sides claimed to really want to play ball, while accusing the other side of preventing that from happening, which is a great negotiating tactic, but really irresponsible in a pandemic. The message to the public was, it's safe to play. I mean, gently caress the owners, but the players are to blame here too. They were 100% right to insist on full pro-rated salaries , but that's not what really matters right now, is it? And now they've painted themselves into a corner with the "tell us when and where" stuff, and it won't be easy to stop the season even if a lot of people get sick.

When you have to transform a MLB stadium into a spring training complex:

https://twitter.com/PavlovicNBCS/status/1278924538286391296

More details here: https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/giants/giants-make-big-changes-oracle-park-july-1-training-begins

quote:

Essentially, the plan is to use the main field for training and then have a new facility, so to speak, extend from Triples Alley to the player's parking lot, which sits beyond the left-field wall. In addition to the four new bullpen mounds, the Giants will have two cages set up in tunnels that will be used as extra bullpen mounds. They also will have three hitting tunnels, two of which can also hold full-length pitching mounds. The plan is to be flexible within those nets, allowing for BP sessions but also bullpen sessions.

The coolest addition may come in a space usually reserved for Audis and oversized trucks. The Giants plan to turn the player garage into a turfed area for drills, with the added benefit that the massive doors there can be opened and provide ventilation.

Although I wonder if a few owners will be forced to sell when the season is cancelled.

Still don't think the season happens, but I just wanna say that the Giants schedule is pretty brutal

https://twitter.com/ktvusports/status/1280276335345102849

Seven games against the Dodgers in LA and only three in SF. Six games (1/10th of the season) in Coors Field. And the only under .500 teams I see on there are Texas and Seattle (the Rockies don't count because, again, Coors). If the whole team doesn't die maybe they can get the #1 pick in next years draft at least.

I'm watching an intrasquad game in an empty stadium with players in t-shirts sitting behind home plate and piped-in crowd noise and the home plate umpire is a minor league skills coach. You know, normal stuff.

What, your amp doesn't go to 11?

I know the White Sox start off against the Twins and Indians, are most of the teams going against intradivision rivals to start the season? There's potential to build a big lead (or dig a deep hole) right off the bat.

The schedule is heavy on division games, period. Each team plays 40 division games and 20 interleague games in the same geographic area. So the White Sox play the Twins, Tigers, Indians and Royals 10 times each, and 4 or 5 games against every NL Central team, and that's it. Which makes sense, you want to limit travel during a pandemic, but it makes this years schedule really unbalanced. According to Fangraphs, the teams with the hardest strength of schedule are the O's, Marlins, Mariners, Giants and Rockies - bad teams in the East and West who don't get to play the weaker Central divisions (hey, Fangraphs said it, not me OK)

IMO it's not really fair to blame the Marlins players here. This was inevitable. You can absolutely blame baseball players collectively, they pushed very hard to start the season. Their "tell us when and where" PR campaign was insanely stupid. But let's not blame individual players for getting sick.

I wonder what would've happened if the players had just refused to report to camp. Wonder if Manfred would've imposed a season anyway, and gone to court to compel them to play, or what.
