Definitely check out zero mission. It adds some lore to Super Metroid in some of the late parts of the game too.

Interesting, I mean it is linear in that you have to do things in a certain order to get the right power ups, but most of that is via going back to other areas to get to doors you couldn't get in to before. Unsure of linear is the best word for that but I see your point.
