So for a long time Bob Marley and the Wailers would transport me to a place sober that beat being on drugs while listening to anything else. (Not that I didn't also listen to them while high as gently caress. Because that was even better.)

Then one day I noticed that it didn't have that same effect. Not just the albums I had been playing so far, but even material I hadn't heard yet. I started experiencing GAD and MDD not too long afterwards. But in this case I think the two were only linked by the coincidence that it happened around the same time as those things tend to start. I am much better now but still just can't rock out the same way. Is that what people mean about the magic of childhood that goes away and never returns? But then, Oasis and Wilco (and admittedly old Coldplay when high) made me feel the same way afterwards. Although they don't now and maybe nothing does.

idk but as a reggae fan i've never understood the hullabaloo behind bob marley. i guess u had to be alive at the time to understand. to me thievery corporation is top of the line and the rest are just old reggae roots fellers

wanting to like bob marley is like wanting to like ac/dc. it's just too common to enjoy

I think Bob Marley is a bit like Prince where, to me I never really got the whole Prince hype. Like, yeah he's a good pop songwriter and musician but when doves cry and raspberry beret and little red corvette? Really? And then you hear some deep cuts and it's like ohhhh wow. Why do they never play these on the radio? Why is it always just Jammin' and no woman no cry (only ever the live version)?

Yes! Some discussion below this post about B-sides and deep cuts but honestly just listening to a whole album that has the regular radio cuts plus more is enough.

I guess some of it might sound cheesy in the way that playing Sublime on repeat or writing a songs about love that use the word "love" might seem. But all of what it deals with was and is important and if it might seem simplistically dealt with that's part of the style and the people it was written for seemed to think it resonates so there is that.

My advice is to go early, extremely early. I am the same I wore out home dubbed cassettes of like Legend and Exodus (all the radio/mall songs) at like age 11 and never need to hear another "hit" from dude again. But Mr. Brown (posted upthread) still makes me want to empty my bowels due to the insane bass production and harmonies.

That said, if you're delving into early Wailers you should just be checking out other reggae acts from the same era. I said earlier, Toots and the Maytals were bigger in JA than Bob for many years, and there's a reason, Toots is the greatest. I'll fight anybody. Listen to Time Tough. Listen to Fever. Pressure Drop. 54-46 Was My Number. All better than any Bob Marley song and I don't even think Bob Marley is bad. The In The Dark album will make you drop a enchirito out of your crackass.

In fact, just listen to soundtrack to The Harder They Come, which pretty much introduced the US to reggae and is probably the greatest album ever made of any genre, any time. Toots, Jimmy Cliff, Desmond Dekker, The Ethiopians... And watch the movie which is dope, I think a hi-res rip is on youtube at the moment.

Sorry for not dropping links but it's more a rule of thumb re: big name reggae.

Here's a more obscure one - another '77 calypso banger. I can't get this out of my head. My mother sung it to me when I was a kid and I had to, in my thirties, track it down and play it for my kid.

He's talking poo poo on the judges of the Calypso Monarch because he was pissed off he had the biggest audience hits and wasn't winning the judges' comp. He finally won in like 2000.

I ought to big up my local radio here, CIUT FM (ciut.fm), university of Toronto radio, has a great reggae show Monday mornings called The Morning Ride, from 6am-9am EST. Sometimes it can get a bit ehhh, but there's always quality in there. And The Drill Squad on Tuesday mornings 6-9 which is an awesome hip hop/old school/reggae/house/breaks show, often has some solid reggae sets in it. You kind of have to get into the whole airhorns and klaxons and shouting over the tracks craziness thing with that show though which is part of the experience but can be annoying if you just want to listen to some tunes. There's other great shows too that you can get some good reggae on but those are the main ones.

someone a while back asked for some darker reggae/dub. Prince Far I is pretty amazing and some of the deepest dub i've ever heard. Cry Tuff Dub Encounter Chapter III is probably my favorite Dub Album of all time:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKF86zv1QF0

and now for something (sorta) different.

Built to Spill actually did a dub song, and it rips pretty hard

I really like this mix of william s burroughs's spoken word and dub

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNG8TfBk3ho

last one, probably my favorite upsetters/lee perry dub (dub starts at ~3:52 or so, but the original is a great listen as well)

bonus another chill reggae track i like, liquidator by harry j all-stars
