it will never cease to amaze me how all the original designs for that franchise from the main works are... pretty reasonable, to the point where the most ridiculous outfit is basically just a minidress, despite it technically starting out as actual porn

and then the spinoffs, especially the mobile game, are just wall-to-wall TITS TITS rear end rear end TITS despite being nominally SFW

(no, seriously, though, when the gently caress did Kirei resurrect a dead guy just to laugh at how much he sucked rear end? because I feel like I'd remember that and I don't at all)

to try and bring this back around to things that are good about anime and not things that are bad about anime (which you will find both of in spades in the Fate franchise depending on where you look), here's why this weirdo priest is probably one of my favorite villains in all of fiction, and very definitely my favorite anime villain

(i'm spoiler-tagging anything in this that actually happens on-screen, and leaving backstory untagged)

so, essentially, Kirei is the son of this guy named Risei, who is, in general, a certified Decent Dude. Kirei was a smart kid, everyone thinks he's great, etc etc. however, there's one problem: he is incapable of feeling love for his father. more than that, he finds his father's ideas of beauty and goodness completely incomprehensible and unfulfilling.

he starts developing a complex about this pretty fast, because he realizes that this means he's waaaay the gently caress out of sync with everyone else in the world. he spends his teenage years trying desperately to correct this problem with himself; one particular thing he tries is punishing himself in the manner he believes sinners like himself should be punished, from fasting, to trying to mentally torture himself, to flaying himself and deliberately dislocating his own bones.

eventually he's basically tried everything and is out of ideas, so he decides, "gently caress it, maybe love will make me stop being a giant rear end in a top hat." so he marries this terminally ill woman named Claudia and has a kid named Caren with her. this... doesn't really work. after a couple years of this, she's dying in the hospital and Kirei comes to say goodbye, with the full intent of topping himself after. he vents his spleen to her about how hosed up he is, and how he could never really love her even though he wanted to...

which she responds to by, I poo poo you not, stabbing herself in the goddamn heart in front of him in one last-ditch effort to make him feel love and emotion, saying "no, you do love me." she dies happy, seeing tears stream down his face, indicating that this, somehow, actually worked.

except uh, not really. Kirei wasn't crying because he loved his wife and wanted her to live; Kirei was crying because he was pissed that she killed herself instead of letting him kill her. realizing this, Kirei basically just throws his hands up and says "gently caress it, gently caress trying to be better, I am apparently impossible to fix," and sends his daughter away to live with his dead wife's family, because he pretty much knows he's going to either kill or horrifically abuse her otherwise. he decides not to top himself after all and instead just kind of keeps drifting through his church Executor duties, deciding that joy of any kind is a sin and that he needs to just keep his head down and do his job.

and then a weird insignia pops up on his left hand, indicating that he got picked for this "Holy Grail War" thing that's going on, in which a whole bunch of wizards try to gently caress each other's poo poo up using summoned mythological heroes, with a wish from the Holy Grail as the prize for the winner. he kinda goes at this because he has no sense of purpose and no wish that the Grail could give him, but just rolls with it, and ends up being placed by his father as an ally to a guy named Tokiomi.

long story short, Tokiomi is the master of Gilgamesh. as in, "The Epic of." Tokiomi, however, is a little bitch baby, whereas Gilgamesh is as much of an rear end in a top hat as Kirei is and has a roughly planet-sized ego on top of that. they do not get along. Gilgamesh, however, ends up deciding that Kirei actually kind of whips rear end, because they are a very similar breed of rear end in a top hat. Gilgamesh has Kirei literally stab Tokiomi in the back and the two of them start doing hosed Up poo poo for the rest of the war while laughing about it and drinking hella loving wine.

then it's down to just him and a mercenary named Kiritsugu as the last two master-servant pairs, and they have a badass fight where Kiritsugu uses bullet-time magic to get around Kirei being able to punch him so hard his organs explode. their duel gets cockblocked because it turns out the Holy Grail is actually Zoroastrian Satan and made up mostly of people-eating acid mud, and both Kiritsugu and Kirei get sucked into it.

it then promptly spits Kirei and Gilgamesh back out, completely healed and renewed, except Kirei's heart is now literally made of Zoroastrian Satan. they go back to the church and Kirei keeps Gil alive by basically using a bunch of burnt, nearly-dead orphans as living batteries, and Gil repays Kirei by drinking all of his wine. (this is not a joke. Gil is a dick.)

ten years later, there's another Holy Grail War going on... and wouldn't you know it, Kirei's the appointed supervisor and Kiritsugu's adopted kid is in it. Kirei goes and engages Fuckery Mode.

now, depending on the route, it can go a few different ways from this point. he's not very interesting in the Fate route, and he's only marginally moreso in Unlimited Blade Works. Heaven's Feel, however, is what really seals it for me.

see, in Heaven's Feel, Fate throws yet another clusterfuck onto the insane pile of clusterfucks it's got going. very very long story short, it's about a background character from the previous routes being revealed to be basically a ticking time bomb who will give birth to a Holy Grail (and the resulting people-eating mud) and cause the apocalypse when that timer goes off. and for as much as an rear end in a top hat as Kirei is, he doesn't particularly like this.

fast-forward to the end of the route. Shirou, the actual protagonist and Kiritsugu's son from earlier, is about to sacrifice himself to blow the almost-born Holy Grail to poo poo with a projection of Excalibur (yes, that Excalibur). except this is the very next thing he sees:

yep, you guessed it, Kotomine motherfucking Kirei in the house.

Shirou goes " dude, what are you doing, go away." Kirei answers "WE GONNA BE BIRTHING SOME PEOPLE-EATING MUD TONIGHT BOI"

Shirou goes " why the ever loving gently caress, you're not going to be able to control the people-eating mud you stupid rear end, let me just blow this thing up so my girl doesn't have to give birth to this poo poo"

Kirei goes "lmao no, I'm a priest, my job is to bless everything that gets born and that includes people-eating apocalypse mud, no abortions here fucko"

Shirou calls him a nutcase, Kirei goes "right back at ya, we're both gonna die either way so who cares "

for, you see, Kirei is running out of heart-Satan to fuel himself, and Shirou has a whole list of current problems that starts somewhere around "horrific brain damage from using his future self's left arm, which has been grafted onto his shoulder, to do stronk magic" and ends somewhere around "his body is literally patching itself together with swords every time he gets injured, making him look somewhat like a human porcupine covered in blood"

after a little back and forth, Kirei ends up for-real explaining himself, and, tl;dr, he doesn't see the apocalypse mud as much different from himself, and he sees the question of whether it should exist as roughly the same as the question of whether he should. because they're both created to do evil and have no capacity for anything else.

so, as a result of his hosed up complex about his own morality in relation to his religious beliefs, Kirei ends up, and I swear this is not a joke or misrepresentation, fistfighting a brain-damaged 16-year-old who keeps popping spikes out of every new wound on his body, who just will not go down no matter what he does, over the issue of whether the latter can abort his girlfriend's Zoroastrian Satan pregnancy using King Arthur's sword. because Fate is an exercise in figuring out "okay, what's the most absolutely ridiculous and insane thing we could possibly have happen for a climax," and then working backwards so that it not only makes perfect sense, but is some loving Shakespearean poo poo.

tl;dr: that priest from earlier, where the poster went on at length about how badass he is and just vaguely called him a "sadist"? yeah, that doesn't really cover it, he's basically one of the worst people in the entire cast (the only people who can definitively be called "worse" are a horrific child abuser, a rapist, and an actual serial killer). however, he's also an incredibly entertaining horrible person, and the specifics of how and why he is horrible lead to one of the most absolutely batshit bonkers fight scenes I have ever witnessed in my life, a scene that frankly justifies Fate's existence as a franchise in and of itself.

(also, if you haven't noticed, this franchise is lowkey metal as all gently caress. it's not exactly an accident that is with a chef hat and knife, because the two defining elements of it are "delicious food" and "people doing poo poo that would make Manowar's album cover artist go 'okay that's a little much.'")

It definitely had harem anime tropes and it did suffer for them but I don't think i'd describe it as a 'harem anime'. Important female characters desiring the main character is not confined to harem anime or even anime in general. The 'gender neutral' character was always supposed to pick a gender at some point and her relationship with the main character influenced the choice.

It's still pretty badly handled and doesn't make sense with how grimdark the setting is. These people might be the last remnant of humanity and they just piss around having dates because anime.

i can't think of much along those lines, but Coyote Ragtime Show would probably qualify

when Pirate King Bruce dies, his old pirate buddy Mister busts out of prison to go find Bruce's daughter - the only person who has the clues to find his secret treasure hoard - and they go on a quest to find the treasure, racing against government pursuers seeking to apprehend Mister, a galactic crime syndicate seeking to get their hands on the treasure, and the fact that the treasure happens to be on a planet the military is about to blow up for unrelated reasons

fair warning, i honestly don't remember much about it beyond the premise. i'm guessing that means it's probably not super good but not super bad either, but i think it'd probably kinda fit what you're looking for

I mean, I think Western Scifi Animation has a pretty tremendous pedigree, especially if you also include things that blur the lines between scifi and fantasy. Most of the Transformers franchise comes to mind immediately. Samurai Jack. The Iron Giant. I always thought 9 was underrated. Atlantis the Lost Empire is fun even if its not groundbreaking. Futurama. Invader Zim. The Voltron remake. The She-Ra remake. I could go on but this is just top of my head stuff.

Narzack
Sep 15, 2008

I thought about stuff like Transformers, but I don't know if I'd consider that western animation, since it was originally a Japanese property. Iron Giant, I totally forgot about, and I have no excuse for that, since it's amazzzzzing. Atlantis is really good, too. It's a shame it didn't get the respect it deserves, because there is a lot to like in it. Invader Zim, I've never seen before, but isn't Voltron originally an anime, too? Futurama, sure.

So, I guess I'm talking about sci fi, and not sci fi/fantasy.

STOP BEING EVIL.

I think it just falls into the issue with a lot of western animation being geared towards children so adults are less comfortable with going over it.

Wander Over Yonder is a really nice show with really nice friendly themes and some pretty weird space stuff. There was an episode with a living planet that got jealous, a giant dog that played with planets like a ball, and a whole episode following a little black cube of darkness.

Recently, Craig McCracken also made a new series for netflix called Kid Cosmic where an alien crashlands near a truck stop in the middle of nowhwere and a kid finds some alien rocks and glues them to rings to get superpowers.

Narzack posted:

Transformers I think is on balance more American than Japanese, but it really has its feet on both sides. A lot of the original figures (but not all of them) came from Diaclone, which was Japanese, but not all of them, and it was the American company Hasbro that created the whole brand and forged a story for them and commissioned a comic and cartoon, but the cartoon was animated in Japan (like most 80s cartoons), and then after it ended, both America and Japan made separate sequel series with no relation to eachother.
