Planetes above all others.

Some anime are about heroes, towering characters who punch evil in the balls. Some are about outlaws, righting wrongs while down on their luck and fighting for a chance.

Planetes is about astronaut-janitors. They came to space with a dream to explore and push boundaries and be the first and greatest, and it turns out that somebody needs to clean up the poo poo made by the first and greatest. Sure, somebody's out there doing crazy poo poo, but what about the schmucks at the bottom of the corporate ladder trading their dream in for a lovely paycheck?

There's an entire episode about life insurance.

I know this is the animation thread but I thought the original manga for Planetes was 1000% better. It has a much tighter story focusing solely on the crew of the Toybox and doesn't completely put off the Tanabe/Hachi romance until the very end.

Isn't Megas XLR impossible to find due to some weird tax thing?

It doesn't preclude the series becoming available but it requires someone actually willing to spend the money on it. The same thing happened with Sym-bionic Titan and that eventually got added to Netflix.

i want to hear more about the "weird tax thing"

Cartoon Network wrote it off as a tax loss which means they can't really do much of anything with it anymore.

They just released a Pacific Rim anime Im not going to watch

Its... okay. It takes place after the second movie and can be kind of dark. The premise is that kaiju start showing up in Australia and so the entire continent just gets abandoned by the military. The show proper takes place five years after that with everything in ruins.

The biggest problem it has is near the end because the movie tried to keep things fairly realistic with their stuff but the show just throws it all away by having a kaiju that can look like a normal human but also transform into a giant monster.
