Fight Phase, START!

Week 1, South-West Libeccio Qualifiers, The Ziggurat of the Endless

Deep in the desert sands around Copher since they started writing down it’s history, the Ziggurat of the Endless has stood as a silent monument to a civilization long dead, lost to the sands of time without so much of a name to call them by this gargantuan structure has been the sole remnant of this mysterious people ever since then. And currently it is surrounded on all sides by a temporary campground put up by the House for this week’s event.

Or rather it’s set up in a circle staying a respectable distance away from the Ziggurat itself because of the; extra security that the Nameless Immortal had provided to the event itself. They were very respectable, very poised, and also all entirely made up of the risen dead; amenable enough to allow this event to take place on his ground afterall, he still wished to remind all those present that it was still by all accounts his ground. As a happy side effect, the normal rough and raucous crowd that follows such events were very well behaved at the venue.
The Judges presiding over this event are, :mil101:Chrola, :ironicat:Endless Reflection of the Musing Glades, and :chef:Ander Cherrycheeks.

Within one of the tents placed closer to the structure itself, Clan Teeny Kobolds were getting read for their bout. It mostly consisted of Oshyn Kingfisher in an ice bath whilst the support team respectfully stayed outside the tent.
“Not that I question your wisdom, but is a bracing ice bath really the thing she should be doing before the match?” Queried Winston as they shuffled through the documentation about their opponent.
“Oh no we did that earlier, this is more for the fact that we're in a desert, and she’s like a fish person.” He saw the raised eyebrows he got from Winston and Grugtik at this and quickly clarified. “Tritons get dehydrated very quickly in hot and dry climates, why else do you think so many of them work along the coastline here?”
“Eeeeh, fair, now back to business, show us this goon then Winston.” Grugtik waved towards his accountant, Winston nodded and laid the files out on the table.

Biography: Laslow spent a very large amount of time at the Archmage Prospero's Exclusive Academy as a porter for many years before coming to Copher. When exposed to the sheer concentrated snobbery squared of both classically trained mages and also old money aristocracy, you too would be filled with the urge to become a mageslayer.
“Can’t really say I blame him, wizards are pretty nobby as a rule. Now we got to- AH!” Grugtik exclaimed as he turned around and saw one of the gold and obsidian decorated skeletons that made up the Nameless Immortal’s honour guard. It stared at him, and then pointed to the distant arena on top of the Ziggurat.
“Nearly time to go?” Grugtik squeaked, the skeleton nodded. “Okay, get Oshyn a towel and lets get ready”

Match 3

Laslow Dudz of Clan Thunder Hawk Vs Oshyn Kingfisher of Clan Teeny Kobolds

The crowd was pretty restless at this point in the day, both fights of the Heavyweight Qualifier so far ended extremely quickly, which to a point can be a good thing but doesn’t make for an engaging match when it feels like only one side of the fight is doing any actual fighting. But this time the match up was a grappler versus grappler fare, perhaps this would be the one that goes the distance?

The bell rang, and both fighters dashed forward, arms outstretched and clashing in the middle. Laslow who had a slight height advantage over Oshyn managed to bear her to the floor and attempted to get the anaconda choke onto her, arms wrapping around under her neck but she pulled herself back suddenly destabilising his footing, and flipped him over onto his side for her own Kimura attempt. Her attempts to advance the hold fell short, so she opted to grab around his hips and throw him into the ground. Her attempts to transition into a different grapple however were halted when whilst on the ground, Laslow used the opportunity to grab hold of her foot and attempt the Toe hold.

“Shake ‘em off Oshyn!” Called Grugtik from the red corner, Oshyn obliged by kicking Laslow from the hold but she couldn’t get him off of her. He started throwing Elbows onto her as she protected her vitals, until she saw the opening to start her own grappling attempt. She manages to get the start of a North/South choke but can’t complete it in the face of the strikes from Laslow, he rises from the floor quickly when he has an opening, Oshyn tries to bring him down but he fends off the attempt. Laslow attempts to swing down on her head but is stopped in his tracks by a quick stomp on the foot from Kingfisher.
Laslow wouldn’t be deterred as he launches forward and grasps hold of Oshyn, with the two fighters grappling in the centre of the ring Laslow keeps trying to slip his arms under her neck for the North/South Choke, but not before Oshyn with a grip on his thigh pulls his leg back and throws him down on the floor with a thud, bringing them both down together. The fight was starting to heat up as the round neared the end and so close in points that when Laslow was first up off the floor first, before he could engage his brain with his body, he ran up and booted Oshyn right in the face before she got off the floor.

The fight ground to an immediate halt, Grugtik has his fist in his mouth, Laslow’s coach has both his hands on his head with distinct grimace, and the Guide looks over to Poppy. She raised her hand, she was not happy, the Guide looked at her signal and turned back to the match.

“Disqualification!” Shouted the Guide
“What!?” Exclaimed Laslow, he looked back at his own coach but he knew that Poppy and the Guide were entirely right on this.
“Kicking a downed opponent in the head is strictly against the rules, disqualification!”
And at that moment the crowd erupted.

Round 1 – DQ for Laslow Dudz (Kicking Downed Head) (36 – 31)

Oshyn Kingfisher wins over Laslow Dudz via Disqualification due to Kicking a Downed Opponent’s Head after 3 minutes and 48 seconds in the first round.
Laslow Dudz: -2 Career, +1 Experience
Oshyn Kingfisher: +3 Experience

As the crowd seemed to get raucous from the result, Clan Teeny Kobold and Oshyn Kingfisher made their efforts quietly out of the arena.
“Not my best performance.” Oshyn lamented, nursing her jaw where the foot had connected.
“Win’s a win” Grugtik reassured, patting her on her back (Or at least as high up her back as he could get without touching something he shouldn’t.) “Whether because you got the other sod to tap or because he got his dumb rear end disqualified, take your free wins and run to the bank with ‘em.”

’Three out of four of our fighters have made it through to the second round though’ Grugtik pondered, flanked on either side by Winston and Skaugran as they made their way down the obsidian steps. ’Not bad, not bad at all… Let’s hope we can keep it up.’

Week 2, West Ponente Qualifier, Mount Arriat

Blessed Mount Arriat, roof of the world, home of the first footstep taken by all of mankind, first and last point in all of creation. Whether or not hosting a commercial event at the foot of what is essentially a sacred monument could be considered blasphemy was something that had to be debated for a while, but eventually it came down to the idea that there are no scriptures against healthy combat sports, so long as the proper ordinances were observed by the people running the event.

Still as it stood being that there were a concentrated mass of devout pilgrims here there had to be some compromises made regarding gambling or certain other activities. The ring itself had been set up in a lowered area normally used for religious gatherings in any case and as such had areas set aside for seating around it, and as always various small tents had their own orbs of projection for those who couldn’t get front seat tickets.

The Judges presiding over this event are :smaug:Gurgorrhim, :geno:Wuni, and :ironicat:Endless Reflection of the Musing Glades.

Round 2 – TO for Komos Saltmarsh (0 – 15)
In a rather bizarre turn of events, Komos Saltmarsh became the first fighter in the history of the House of Spirits to make his opponent tap out, whilst having never actually laid so much as a single finger on them. It is reported that when Crisbis strode forward to throw a punch he put his foot down at a bad angle and badly sprained his ankle.

Within a large tent rented for a VIP showing, Skaugran and Grugtik had taken time out of it’s schedule of training, scouting and coaching to take some time for themselves, and at the same time, check out a few matches that the management were interested in.

At this moment in time Skaugran had brought in a huge tray of Kebab’s bought from a store and as the gang were chowing down he brought to Grugtik’s attention a clump of folders he got from Winston.
“It was a bit of an effort and a lot of this was last second but, I got the files on everyone taking part in the last few matches today boss, who dya wanna see first?”

Grugtik chewed this over, both figuratively and literally as he finished his mouthful, and then picked one at random, Skaugran obligingly laid it out in front of him.

Grugtik nodded affirmatively as he took another mouthful of grilled meats, and flipped through the other file with his free hand.

Grugtik considered both of those sheets side by side for a moment before turning to Skaugran “Bit of a difference in speed there I think, I think it might come down to who’s blows hit first.”
“Isn’t it always how matches go though?” Skaugran pondered out loud, before helping himself to a stick of meat.
“Well… Yes, but that’s beside the point, look they’re heading in how let’s see how they do.”

Match 3

Ile of Clan King Cobra Vs Zhuzod Pridesaber of Clan Flame Tiger

The moment the bell sounded the two fighters launched into their offenses without any regard for defence as they both came out swinging with big haymakers that struck simultaneously. Ile recovered first and lashed out with a hammer fist that knocked Zhuzod for six but got a boot in the head from the Orc before she could push her advantage further. This back and forth continued for another minute until Ile threw another wild haymaker that passed a ducking uppercut from Zhuzod. The hit connected for both sides but Zhuzod slipping under Ile’s guard mitigated some of her blow on impact.
Both sides staggered back from the impact until they could get stuck back in, but Zhuzod this time is the one who recovers first and immediately aimed for the KO with his Signature Inside Uppercut that caught the Aasimar unawares. It hit right on target but it wasn’t quite enough to get that clean knockout, he followed in after with a Superman punch but as the blow connects Ile uses the opportunity to swing in with her elbow and strikes back versus Zhuzod. As the round slowly ticks to a close, she feels that she is losing a little ground versus Zhuzod and comes in with a few more big strikes but Zhuzod plays it cagey and stalls the Aasimar just long enough for the bell to signal the end of the round. The judges score the round 33 - 40, judging the round in favour of Zhuzod.

Round two began with Zhuzod stealing the initiative right out of the gate with a back fisted swing across her temple, catching her off guard and allowing Zhuzod the opening to grab the clinch and start kneeing for all he’s worth. Ile takes a few knees before she wiggles her way out just enough to swing back hard and smash the Orc across the jaw with the back of her fist! He flinches but from the clinch Ile couldn’t put her entire back into it leaving Zhuzod upright, she comes in running to follow up with a flying kick with the intention bring him down to the floor, but Zhuzod takes the shot dead and deliberately leans into it hard, unbalancing Ile and causing her to fall to the floor instead!
Suddenly having to defend from the floor Zhuzod uses the opportunity to grab and attempt to choke her into submission with the Omoplata, and when she wouldn’t play ball using it as a position to hammer elbows into her back whilst the Orc had a firm grip on her dominant arm. Eventually the Guide broke it up, returning to their original positions they began to trade blows, Zhuzod shooting for the KO with his Inside Uppercut but catching a knee from the Aasimar coming the other way. But Ile came off worse from the trade, no sooner did she have both feet on the ground did a straight from Zhuzod catch her across the face, and overhead punch across the head made her stagger and from that position Zhuzod got his arms in and began to choke her out once again. Ile tries to fight her way out, first by trying to get her own choke on the Orc which doesn’t reach, then by trying to punch from her position at his head but is fended off by a knee to the head that drops her to one knee. And right as that happened, with the Guide telling her to defend herself and she being unable to do so, the Guide called an immediate end to the match with a TKO in Zhuzod’s favour.

Round 1 – 9 – 10 (33 – 40)
Round 2 – TKO for Zhuzod Pridesaber (Strikes) (27 – 57)

Zhuzod Pridesaber wins over Ile via Technical Knockout due to Strikes after 4 minutes and 42 seconds in the second round.

As they watched the end of that fight, Winston who had been sent out to get drinks returned with just as Zhuzod’s TKO was announced to the cheers of the tent.

“Good show, good show” Grugtik applauded. ”After a performance like that I’m kinda looking forward to seeing the last match of today, what have we got Skaugran?”
“A few odd bods, that’s for certain, check this out, got someone from the Grey Company, I think.” Skaugran had been looking at the file in question for a few minutes before handing it to Grugtik
“You think?” He took a look to see what all the fuss was about.

Match 4

Weaken of Clan Thunder Hawk Vs Van The Impaler of Clan Grizzly

After the back and forth match that was Ile versus Zhuzod the crowd were looking for a similar showing from Weaken and Van. The two fighters traded shots back and forth with neither side finding much purpose until a ducking hook slipped under Weaken’s guard and pounded him right in the jaw. Van The Impaler raced forward as the Aasimar staggered, with both arms hooking around his body he threw his weight to one side, lifting Weaken up and slamming to Aasimar into the mat, but before he could use that position to leverage anything a lighting fast jab flickered out from Weaken and caught him across the jaw, staggering him back.

Weaken hesitated before he dived in to try and land some more shots, but that momentary flicker in offense was enough for Van The Impaler to regain his footing and plant a hard foot into the Aasimar’s side before he even got close, and took a few steps back as he stumbled. Weaken went in for the Clinch, but before he could even get so much as halfway there Van The Impaler was there first with a leaping kick and hit him dead centre in the side of the head. Weaken drops like a sack of potatoes as the momentum carries Van over, and before he can start the ground and pound the Guide runs over quickly waves him off, because Weaken is out like a light.

Week 3, North-West Mistral Qualifier, Brokekeel Coast

When asked how you could consider something both beautiful and ugly, the Scholar Adman had once referred to the Brokekeel Coast as the perfect example of this seemingly contradictory dichotomy. You have the redstone cliffs and the beautiful azure waves of the ocean, a perfect view as far as the eye can see but alongside it, the ancient battle scarred wreckage of countless ships lost to the waves that due to a quirk of the currents wash up here over time, a veritable boneyard of ships sometimes with sailors included. ‘Ruinously beautiful’ was how he had described it.

And today this solemn nautical graveyard plays host to the very last qualifier of the Maelstrom Tournament. The beaches had been cleared up for the tourists, the stands had been set up, and the local pirates that normally haunt the waves around these parts had agreed to ease off on their activities until the day’s events were over and packed up. After all they got free tickets from the arrangement, and although the House’s version of pit fighting had a few more rules than theirs did seeing another man get slugged in the face was always good for a laugh.

As the waves lapped on the shore of the beach, Clan Teeny Kobolds were getting ready for the fourth and final bout of Round 1. Or at least, they were supposed to be getting ready for it, they were however seemingly short one Dragonborn in the arrangement.

“We’re 10 minutes to kicking off time and Mardor’s not in his bloody tent!” Grugtik snapped, having progressed past a tizzy and entered mild panic at this point. “Are you sure you know where he is Skaugran?”

“Well Broski told me he was expecting some deliveries today so he might have popped out to-” Skaugran started before stopping from the look in Grugtik’s face. “He’ll~ be back soon. Look there he is now.”

Grugtik opened his mouth to maybe say a few pointed things before, recoiling slightly at the incredibly tight, dark red swimming trunks the Dragonborn was wearing that didn’t seem to leave a lot to the imagination. Some things you just couldn’t avoid looking at if it just happened to be there at eye level.

“Bro!” Called Skaugran as he pitter-pattered up to the Dragonborn, two hands extended in the air.
“Bro-seph!” Responded Mardor, dropping to one knee, high fiving both hands one after the other, then bumping consecutive elbows, punctuating each touch with “Yo, Bro, Scales, Up!”
“Sorry boss I got like this custom order fighting trunks for my arena debut, dya like it?” At this he turned around and pointed with two thumbs to the back of his shorts. In bronze thread was inscribed MARDOR DANXIC in bold capitals.
Grugtik looked at the shorts, then at the Dragonborn and simply urged. “Yeah great-sound-good can you please just put your cup in now? I don’t need to see the outline of your junk this late in the evening.”
Mardor gave him the thumbs up and as he made himself slightly more presentable, turned to see Winston running up to him with a file. “Got the files on the Bronzall Grugtik, and the Guides are looking to get started, are we ready?”
“Yeah just about, hand that over.”

Match 3

Mardor Danxic of Clan Teeny Kobolds Vs Bronzall Crookedpeak of Clan Flame Tiger

The match kicked off with Mardor taking the initiative and tackling Bronzall to the ground before he could even get a single foot in. Initiative in hand, Mardor grabbed hold of the Orc’s leg and began to wrench it back and forth with his hips, but as he twisted and turned Bronzall rolled with one of his turns and used that to break himself out. Reaching over he grabbed Mardor by the shoulders and began trying to get the North/South Choke onto the Dragonborn, and from that position started shoving towards the wall of the cage as he tried to break out. When he was just close enough to the wall however, Mardor broke the hold and with his feet firmly planted into grabbed a hold of Bronzall and in one wrenching moment slammed him hard into the mat, he attempted to break his fall somewhat by grabbing onto something but ended up pulling one of Mardor’s tendrils instead. The fall opened up a very bad cut into the Orc but the referee did not stop the match.

Bronzall would not be removed that easily however, no sooner did Mardor break that grapple was his back on him again with Peruvian Necktie around Mardor. Mardor couldn’t quite get himself out of it at first, he tried pushing him up against the cage but Bronzall managed to plant his feet firmly enough to resist it, but whilst he was pushing hard enough to make Bronzall have to push back to maintain his grip, he suddenly pulled back and with Bronzall’s unintentional assistance, rolled him onto the floor with a firm grip on his hand and clinched for the armbar whilst they were both prone on the mat.
But he couldn’t quite get the full hold onto him before Bronzall managed to land enough kicks on to him to make him break the grapple, but as they both rolled upwards Mardor tackled him into the wall of the cage head on and began his offense in earnest. Bronzall reached underneath and tried to grapple around Mardor’s neck but being pushed so close to the cage allowed the Dragonborn to grip Bronzall’s Leg and drag him to the floor for the toe hold, when the Orc tried kicking his way out Mardor moved further up and started to choke him with the Americana instead, and when Bronzall managed to get his third Peruvian necktie, he could only hold it for a few seconds before Mardor’s fist caught him right on the nose and put him to the mat. The bell rang at that moment for the end of the round, the judges scored it 52 - 47 in favour of Mardor, that last lunging hook seemed to have made the difference.

The second round began with Mardor, seemingly letting Bronzall get that early grapple onto him, Bronzall took the opportunity and went straight for the Triangle Choke, but Mardor fended him off, he went next for the kneebar but Mardor’s firm grip preventing him from being able to lever his legs into the right position, and he was forced to break it off.
“Mardor!” Grugtik shouted from the corner. “Stop jerking him around, you're losing points here!” Mardor looked back at his manager and just nodded with a grin. Bronzall came at him but stopped short when Mardor took a firm step forward and stomped down on his foot, then as he fell towards him he grabbed the orc, swung him around his body using the power in his hips and slammed him into the mat. Bronzall used that position to try and grapple onto Mardor’s arm before he could get any mounts going, but Mardor yanked him to his feet, kicked out his legs from under him and slammed him hard against the mat a second time, causing him to lose his grip. Bronzall swung his legs and wrapped them around Mardor’s throat to once again prevent the mount, Mardor quickly broke out of that before he could tighten the grip but in doing so it allowed Bronzall to get back to his feet.

Bronzall knew he was quickly losing ground at this point and needed to act fast, he charged in low, aiming for his opponent’s legs to try and trip him up but before he could even get there Mardor shot one leg up and hammered it right down onto his back knocking him to the floor; before he could even think to dodge the Dragonborn had grabbed him bodily lifted him up off of the floor and slammed him back down onto the mat face first, knocking all the wind out of him. Finally able to get the mount, Mardor started throwing punches for all he was worth, trashing Bronzall against the mat but the Orc was able to keep himself protected until he could see an opportunity out. When he thought he had it he tried to grip around Mardor’s midsection and throw him off, but as soon as he put one arm out Mardor had grabbed it, and wrenched it back into an arm bar. Bronzall tried to fight his way out, Mardor wouldn’t let go and as he threw a few errant kicks into the side of the Orc’s head, the bell rang and the Guide broke up the grapple. 56 - 36 in favour of Mardor, with one round to do Mardor would win if Bronzall couldn’t force the tap in the next round.

As Mardor returned to his corner, Grugtik hopped up to his side. “Okay listen, Mardor, can we have a little less showboating?”
“Showboating? I mean I will admit I wasn’t quite putting in the full effort.” Mardor rolled his shoulders, cracked his knuckles and leant towards Grugtik. “I’ve got what I came for anyway that round, now I’m gonna just go right on ahead and make a statement”

The third round began, Bronzall knew that the only way he would win at this point is if he tried for the technical knockout. It wouldn’t be likely he could get Mardor to tap out of any holds he tries, and he wasn’t about believe he would get himself disqualified by doing something dumb, so TKO it is. Mardor took his charge head on as they both ended up in the mat and started to grapple in earnest, Bronzall grabbed an arm, pulling it back for an arm bar but as he did Mardor simply pulled back, rotated his wrist out of the grip and suddenly he was the one with the grip, he sneaked his other arm in under Bronzall’s and with the figure of eight lock attained a solid Kimura grip. He tried rolling out but Mardor grabbed his arms around his neck and squeezed hard, only breaking the lock when he took a desperate backhanded swing to the jaw that loosened it long enough for Bronzall to break free.
He reaches up from his prone position and grabs back on to Mardor, he’s trying to pull him into the same Peruvian Necktie he’s used on him a lot this match but Mardor won’t let him, he drops his guard and pulls him onto the floor and now he’s the one controlling this grapple again. He tries to reach the foot but Mardor lifts them both up and boots him in the stomach, he tries again to get the lock for the Necktie, but Mardor shifts around with his entire bodyweight and throws him hard into the mat. He’s nowhere near done, before Bronzall can recover he’s bodily lifted and thrown again with another hip toss back into the mat, and again he’s trying to grab Mardor but his attempts get answered with a hard strike to the face before finally Mardor grabs out from under him and wrenches up. His own Peruvian Necktie, and he’s refusing to let go! Bronzall tries to throw him off but he rolls with it, he tries to grab his arm to lever himself out but Mardor just leans in heavily and traps it between his thigh and body. When it’s looking like he might just tap the bell rings out. It’s over, but it was clear to the crowd from the onset even when Bronzall tried to fight back, Mardor had control of the situation the entire time and never let go.

The judges give their final scores and ratings. Bronzall managed to score an incredible 54 points considering his situation, maybe he can come out of this with at least the knowledge that he got some good hits in. And then the Judges gave Mardor’s score.
Seventy three points, the highest rated round for a fighter in the entire tournament so far. A decisively crushing victory right there and then for Mardor Danxic and the crowd goes wild.

"Today I will cause problems on purpose"
At the beginning of week 4, Poppy Merribuck made an announcement in advance of the second round of the North Tramontane qualifier in the Temple of the Eight Winds. “First of all, I would like to express my utmost approval for the competitors of the past three weeks for listening to the House on the matter of fighting fairly - most of you anyway - and that I hope this state of fair play continues going forward.”
“The second point is that from this round onwards things will be working a little differently, you may have noticed an extra bracket of fights in round two of the qualifiers titled Loser’s Bracket, sooner than have all the fighters eliminated in round one wait until we begin opening any side tournaments, we’ve decided to offer a second chance to all involved to prove themselves before the grand tournament held later this year. As such we have split the next round into the Winner’s Bracket and the Loser’s Bracket across all qualifiers.”
“The Winner’s Bracket is made up of those who won their matches in round one, from this point onwards the winner of this bracket will get an automatic spot in the Grand Tournament. Those who lose their matches however will not be eliminated from the running entirely, they will face off against the winners of the Loser’s Bracket in the next round, a double elimination bracket as it were. Of course, if you lose in the Loser’s Bracket you will be unfortunately eliminated from the tournament entirely, so fight like your shot depends on it!
“Then before the tournament itself we shall be capping off these qualifiers with one last set of matches, in which the winners of the Loser’s Bracket, will face off against the fighters who lost in the Winner’s Bracket final, to determine the last 8 fighters of the 16 fighter tournament planned this next month.”

“With that in mind, here are the locations of Round 2 qualifiers.”

Week 4, North Tramontane Qualifier Round Two, The Temple of the Eight Winds

High on a mountain top along the Skyshield Mountains hidden in an extinct volcano lies a curious temple that normally only sees a few visitors each year, The Temple of the Eight Winds. Many thousands of years ago legends say, the eight winds had been bound to the mountain’s peak by a terrible demon, or perhaps an evil god until a great warrior who had climbed to the top carved the entire tip of the mountain off in one clean sweep and freed the winds, which scattered into eight directions to escape their captor. This is offered as the explanation as to why this place through the meddling of gods or a geographical quirk the location became the place where the winds of Copher come to rest.

Sheltered from the gale force winds above in the hollowed bowl of the mountain itself, a lot of time and effort had been spent in making what used to be a perilous trek undertaken by only the most hardy - or foolish - of pilgrims into one that could be easily made by spectators of the House. The solution came down to a lot of carefully crafted tunnels, and a lot of stone shaping that happened over the course of many months. The tickets by themselves are very cheap but, come with the asterisk that you have to trek up the mountain yourself. A small but thriving trade has sprung up as a result of this, offering spectators a ‘fast pass’ to the mountain top via flying mounts, teleportation or other such methods, a little more pricey than just walking up but a lot quicker and a lot less tiring.

Week 5, North-Earth Gregale Qualifier Round Two, Goldust Caverns

Of all the venues used for the House of Spirits in Copher, the Goldust Caverns were at the same time the easiest to find agreement to use and the most difficult. The Shah when brought the idea for using the caverns as a venue had simply responded, “Yes, but good luck, I’m not the one you have to convince here.” Of all the various races of Genie that make up the elemental planes the Dao can be considered some of the most unpleasant to deal with, and this was their cavern since the breach that opened it up to the Elemental Plane of Earth, and they have occasionally demanded blood sacrifices to not cause problems. Efforts to close the hole before had been both costly in money and lives and mostly failed, so it had been cheaper to leave them well alone and throw the occasional condemned prisoner in, but the House offered a solution that required no lives to be spent.

Blood spilled in the course of fights that take place in the Goldust Caverns was apparently enough to appease the Dao they had found, so as such rather than one occasional death a large selection of fights allowed them to meet the terms of the pact, and provided a very natural environment for rear end whooping to take place. The security detail at the event has of course made it extra certain that spectators don’t wander off the beaten path and have an ‘accident’, the last thing the House needs is an insurrection of angry earth elementals in the middle of their sporting event after all.

Gathered together in the shade of a small cavity in the wall carved out as their changing room, the Teeny Kobolds war council prepared themselves for the fight ahead.

“The fact that we got all four of our guys past round one and into round two of this new winner’s bracket is a drat good step for us as a company, but let’s not get complacent.” Grugtik started, addressing the assembled management team and Traubon. “First of all, Winston, who is Traubon up against?”
Winston had gotten used to the routine by now, he reached to the bag to his side, pulled out a nice folder and then layed it onto the carved rock they were using as a table. “Bhuv Fangbreaker and orc trained in Alhion and Sjir Darastrix representing his clan in this competition.” He finished and looked to Skaugran and Traubon for their input, Skaugran answered first.
“Eeee, it’s another grappler innit?” Skaugran murmured, on the one hand for rookie grapplers they didn’t have the chin to avoid getting knocked out by a good swing yet, but on the other against strikers they often could make them tap a lot easier. “You know what to do right Traubon?”
“Don’t get grabbed?” Traubon parroted, there had been a lot of training from the other grapplers in the Clan to practice how not to get grabbed, or how to break out of holds.
“Don’t get grabbed.” Grugtik confirmed. “If we can keep on the whole winning and not losing thing we’ll be in the clear. If you don’t mind going over the warmups for the fight we’ll meet you in the ring, sound? Sound. Let’s mosey.”

Match 1

Traubon Steelfist of Clan Teeny Kobolds Vs Bhuv Fangbreaker of Clan Invincibles

The fight kicked off the second the bell rang with Traubon taking the first move, as he lashed out with a hard kick into Bhuv’s mid section. He began to throw left and right hooks into the Orc but couldn't seem to find the purpose. Skaugran nibbled on a talon, a habit of his when he was nervous. “I think he’s trying to bait the straight and go for the grapple, he’s making Traubon extend further out with his body on every swing.” He confided with Grugtik. And sure enough it happened very suddenly, Traubon lashed out with a hard kick to the leg that seemed to send Bhuv buckling, but with one hand gripped on the foot he slipped around behind the dwarf and wrapped a quick arm around his throat. Before they could get the full lock behind Traubon’s head he quickly threw his weight forward to unbalance the Orc, and twist out of the grapple. The few seconds of the choke that did happen however didn’t give him the chance to get his breath back, he could do nothing but defend as Bhuv jabbed at his guard and tried to clinch with him again.

He went in for the trip but Bhuv fended off the leg with his own, and when he went in for another kick Bhuv pushed into his personal space and with both arms grappled onto him lifted him up, over and slammed him hard into the mat. As they fought for dominance on the floor, Bhuv eventually managed to get a solid toe hold which if it had continued on for long may have ended the match right there and then, but Traubon found himself being quite literally saved by the bell before it could have gone on longer with a score of 22 - 38 in favour of Bhuv Fangbreaker.

The Teeny Kobold corner was looking pretty nervous when Traubon returned to the corner, whilst Winston saw to Traubon’s injuries and provided him with water Grugtik and Skaugran started throwing down the game plan.
“He’s been deliberately trying to push into Traubon’s space so he doesn’t have enough room to throw any punches, have you noticed that?” Skaugran recounted, Grugtik who had his eyes fixed on his opponent simply nodded.
“That I have, and he’s been going for holds that are very deliberately either behind, to the side or away from Traubon’s torso, he’s trying to avoid giving Traubon a clear shot to his head.”
“Sooo, what do I tell him, how do we deal with it?”
Grugtik considered this for a moment and then replied. “Well if it was me, I’d maybe just lamp him one when he tries going for a grapple, rather than trying to force it?”
“As good a plan as any, I’ll relay the orders then.”

Round two kicked off in much the same way with the two sides trading blows back and forth, until seeing an Opportunity Bhuv leapt forward with the grab and picking Traubon up bodily slammed him into the mat. But this time Traubon was ready, before the Orc could move himself away he had slipped his leg under his throat and pulled him back with his other hand, locking him against his shin in the traditional Gogoplata maneuver. With the Orc’s head locked in place he wound his arm back for the punch but as he threw it Bhuv threw his body weight to the right and as the hand sailed past his head, grabbed it and with his other free hand pushed Traubon away and forced him to the floor. Now with himself on top he forced his arms around and once again made for the Rear Neck Choke. But Traubon had been practicing for this and his opponent had to kneel to be around the same height as he was, so before the elbow pressed in around his throat, he reached back for Bhuv’s leg and when he got a grip on it, wrenched it forward, knocking the Orc off balance and allowing Traubon room to breath.

Bhuv realises he’s trying to open just enough of a gap to get the punch in and when the RNC was broken, he tried to lever down on Traubon’s dominant hand instead, weighing it down attempting to Americana him into submission or at the very least prevent him from once again being able to strike him. Traubon made some thrusting motions to wiggle himself under Bhuv’s core and with his entire body behind it, lifted himself up to break the Orc’s posture on the clinch, one final thrust rolled him onto his side as the hold was loosened and WHAM.

Traubon threw his entire weight from the floor into one point, one straight punch into the side of Bhuv’s temple, he leant to one side from the impact before very ungracefully slumping down onto the mat. The Guide runs over to check the two fighters as Traubon was trapped under Bhuv, and immediately calls it there and then.

Events Phase: Talent Scouting

It was evening time in the house of Clan Teeny Kobold, the day’s training had wrapped up, with the fighters heading to their rooms to cool off whilst lunch was prepared and the management team of Clan Teeny Kobold’s meeting in the master bedroom turned office for their monthly meeting. This time however was important.

“So, I got some good news, and no bad news this time.” Grugtik started, in front of him was a signed piece of parchment on which bore both the House of Spirit’s official seal, and the signature of Poppy Merribuck and the Shepherd of the House himself. “They’ve finally got the training colleges set up in Copher, and they’re started inviting back the guys who were doing their boot camp there but had to stop due to the stuff that happened.”

Skaugran looked surprised at this, Winston mainly looked confused. “Hi hello.” Winston spoke up, raising a small finger after a few awkward moments. “I’m the only person here who wasn’t ‘part of the industry’, what does that mean exactly for us?”

“It means now the new blood is gonna start trickling into competition.” Skaugran remarked helpfully. “And that means a, we can start hiring new guys for less than it would cost to hire from the other Clans, and b, the House is gonna start opening up side tournaments for the guys who washed out of the current tournament.”

“Mostly we care more about the A part, because although as has been proven that our rostered fighters are kicking several kinds of arse right now, we are still the smallest stable by far.” Grugtik added, tapping his fingers on the statement in front of him. “More fighters means more money, more money means we expand faster, and faster expanding means we can maybe buy this place rather than rent and even - if we are especially fortunate - expand into the other weight divisions

He clapped his hands together looking at the others for approval., Skaugran nodded in agreement, Winston didn’t entirely understand the hype but shrugged semi-committedly. “So we should consider signing on new fighters yeah? I’ll leave the talent scouting to you Skaugran, and the Contract drafting to you Winston.”

“We’ve got a busy month in front of us gentlemen, let’s ride this wave of good fortune to the big time!”

Recruitment has been unlocked! You may now spend your cash on recruiting new fighters, or attempting to buy fighters from the other Clans in the league.

Ginsung Duskmoon and Oshyn Kingfisher - Saving for Improved Defence/Countering, 13/15 XP
“Biggest concern I’ve had with these two are the same ones I had last last month, their styles are great but they let too many shots slip through the net and in an active match the points from those blows can add up real fast, we’re working towards that slowly at this point.”

Mardor Danxic - Improved Chin, -15 XP
”We’ve seen a lot of matches over these two months where in a Grappler versus Striker match, one side lands their signature on the other and the match is just over right there and then. Week 1, East Levante Qualifier Round 2, The House of Serenity

There are three rules all supplicants must know before they enter the grounds of the House of Serenity. One; shoes are taken off at the door, two; please respect the silence inside the temple and three; do not trespass into the inner temple without express permission. Unruly pedestrians that break rules one and two may quickly find themselves in the company of the very large and very scary blacked robed figures that make up the temple guard and asked to leave politely, and they do not accept no for an answer. No one knows what happens to the ones that break rule three, but sometimes they find themselves in one piece in an alleyway with no memory with how they got there, and they may even still have all their fingers and toes.

The courtyard outside the foreboding black basalt temple itself however is a little more relaxed with the rules, and is often the site of a lot of festivals both religious and non-religious and what is a scheduled round of MMA fights but a one night festival that happens on a weekly basis? The peddlers there know the score, the staff brought in by the house to set the arena up were told the score and just to be a little on the safe side a few extra members of the city guard were brought in alongside the House’s own security just in case some of the more out of town spectators with maybe a skinful too many decide that the rules don’t have to apply to them. Disappearing spectators during a sporting event tend to cause comment after all.

In the Clan Teeny Kobolds tent sectioned off a little way in the shade of the temple itself, as Ginsung and Skaugran went over their final warmups together outside, the air inside was tense with stringent calculation. The management team went over the details of their upcoming fight once, twice, three times even, looking over their opponent whilst considering the skills of their own fighter and… The results weren’t ideal.

Biography: Roc the Aged is an old mercenary and adventurer who has come back from 'just one last job' before his retirement a quite a few times in his life. The fact he is still whole and mostly sane is a testament to just how good he is at surviving, a state of affairs he wishes to continue in the league.

Winston who had been looking at the sheet in front of him merely turned to Grugtik and reassured “Well… Ginsung pulled herself back from a bad round one in her first match, and Roc has only won a single match just like she has.”
“But her defence work though.” Grugtik replied morosely, looking at the Hobgoblin’s file alongside Ginsung’s. “We know it’s not great.”
“It could be better, I agree.”
“And Francine Ang in round one was arguably stronger, but her ability to fend blows off wasn’t great. This guy is way better at it than she is and the rating is just barely below her. It’s very likely if Ginsung tries to uses the first round to feel her opponent out she’s gonna be in a real bad time.”
“So then… What’s the plan just tell her to do her best?”
“Telling her to do her best is all we can do, let’s head out we should be making our way to the arena in a few minutes.”

Match 2

Ginsung Duskmoon of Clan Teeny Kobolds Vs Roc The Aged of Clan Thunder Hawk

The match began and both fighters with their arms out began to circle, hands swiped back and forth but no one pushed in quite yet. Ginsung makes the move suddenly, springing up she clasped two arms around the back of Roc’s neck and with her entire body weight pulled him down, trying to start gripping around his throat with her forearms. But Roc had tucked his chin into his throat and crouched as soon as he saw what she was doing, so when she had almost got the hold he sprung up to his full height, lifting her up off the floor, slipping out of her hold and dropping them both back, with Roc hitting the ground first on the ground and his hands gripping Ginsung’s arm. On the way down Ginsung’s head took a glancing blow against Roc’s elbow and opened up a tiny cut over her eye, as she tried to pry herself out the blood obscured her vision. She suddenly was put on the defensive against an opponent she couldn’t quite see properly and she was losing, badly.

She attempted to roll out whilst her arm was in the Kimura grip, but he rolled with her and quickly tucked in his legs to keep on wrenching, she levered herself into a position where she could try and pull herself up but he hooked his one of his free legs around her and pulled it out from under her dropping her back down. The second time however she stood, and he tried to sweep her leg out again, but she had a grip on the Hobgoblin and as she started to fall heaved up with core and waist and threw him off of her back to the back, he slammed into it with a thud that made him spit out his mouthguard and suddenly they had been separated. She used that time to clear her vision, she lost a lot of points in those first few minutes of the match and was at risk of a technical knockout, she went for the takedown taking a hammer fist to the side of her head in the process getting Roc to the ground.

But even from that position she couldn't make that headway. She tried trapping his throat against her leg for the Gogolplata, but he held down the arm she needed to complete the hold. She rolled back and forth with him he tried to clamp around her throat, using the grips she could grab to throw him back and slammed him down with the suplex but he wouldn’t let go, he kept trying to shift the grip and get the arm around her throat as she kept trying make him drop his grip by slamming him against the wall of the cage and the floor of the mat where she could but he wouldn’t, let, go. And it was only during his attempt on a rear neck choke that he finally got a hold of a foot and tried to twist for all it’s worth that he broke it off, landing on her one last hook just as the round ended. The judges scored 47 - 75 in Roc The Aged’s favour, that the match didn’t end with TKO against Ginsung was a small miracle but she needed more than hopes and prayers at this point.

But she wouldn’t get one, the second round began and she went once again for the choke, a Guillotine hold, but Roc was there first and that’s where that fight stayed for the rest of that round almost. They had started trading kicks as they had locked themselves in that right angle grip against each other, before Roc pulled her back and to the ground once again. Ginsung threw punches for all it was worth from that position but with one hand trying to guard her throat and the other being held away by Roc’s spare arm she couldn’t find the space to land more than hard taps. And there she was trapped spending that energy fighting off the choke attempt but without any space to get her own offence going there was no place to get that grip, no space to throw those punches, the clock was ticking Roc decided this put this fight to rest.

He locked hard around that throat with his right forearm and pulled straight up forcing her to stand on her toes, then yanked her back, unbalancing her as she tried to stay upright and then with both arms tucked in tight around her neck and body as she threw punches for all she was worth, threw her around and slammed into the side of the cage. She bounced off the floor, and couldn’t get back to her feet. The Guide stepped in and called it quits there and then.

Week 2, South-East Sirocco Qualifier Round 2, Hazrad’s Folly

Shah Hazrad The Black was at the same time the greatest ruler Copher had even seen in its history, and also its worst tyrant. Hazrad expanded the trade empire of Copher to the entirety of sea and the surrounding coast lines, but acquired that dominance through brutal military campaigns against his trade rivals. Hazrad enriched the citizenry of Copher and funded many of its public works out of his own pockets, but acquired a lot of that money through carefully having his political rivals assassinated and their assets seized whilst he was in power. Hazrad became the richest man in the entire world for the duration of his life time but ended up using a lot of that money on the artificial small chain of islets that to this day bear his name, Hazrad’s Folly.

The Folly is not so much that the process didn’t work but was more that he sunk a vast majority of his massive wealth to achieve this, almost emptying the city’s coffers and leading to some the other members of the council to try and rein in his extravagences before he beggared them all, which didn’t end well. Today the large chain of boats from the various harbours around Copher bring the spectators to this little slice of paradise, the peddlers shipped out earlier in the week to get set up on the main islands as the House makes ready to put on their show of the week.

Week 3, South Ostro Qualifier Round 2, Brokekeel Coast

One of the largest wrecks on the Brokekeel Coast that was used as the location of the ring in this venue is The Tidehunter. Before The Sirocco, it was the premier flagship of Copher’s navy, a three tiered war galleon, containing three hundred and sixty guns and weighing in at around one thousand tonnes, the ship was so infamous that the mere sight of its silhouette drifting through the fog was enough to strike fear into even the most hardened corsairs. But like many great titans of antiquity it came undone through very humble means.

A low tide around the Brokekeel Coast combined with the Tidehunter’s considerable weight during a chase of a routed pirate fleet, caused the ship’s keel to ram into the sharp jagged rocks that were often deceptively hidden beneath the waves and almost ripped half of the Galleon’s underside off as is scraped past. The ship sank quickly as a result, most of the crew were able to be saved when they made it ashore, but as soon as the various ne’er do wells of the coast found out what happened they descended on the ship, stripping it for parts and burning what remained before the Navy could retrieve it and rebuild it. To this day the great bones of that ship diminished through salt water, fire and time make for a suitably impressive backdrop for the ring itself.

Week 4, South-West Libeccio Qualifiers Round 2, Royal Ampitheatre

The Royal Amphitheatre was originally built as an extension of the nearby Copher University as an open air auditorium to only be used by students and staff studying at the university. However after the reign of Hazrad the Black and the messy way it came to an end, the university suddenly found itself somewhat bereft of money. It was then found that by opening up the Amphitheatre to the public and putting on the occasional stage performance there it helped supplement their funding and proved to be very popular as a result.

As a side benefit and as a part of the agreement to make use of the Ampitheatre, students studying at the university get reduced ticket prices on all House of Spirit events that take place in Copher, and in this venue especially almost an entire section of the stands is made up just of students and staff from the University itself. They tend to be the ones that get the most rowdy during the course of the matches, especially the professors.

Away from the wild cheering of the crowd after the best fight of the night so far, the mood in the room of Clan Teeny Kobold’s was by comparison rather subdued. The Teeny Trio that made up the management team were still feeling the shock of Ginsung’s utter defeat last week, it had been an unpleasant wake up call after the four out of four clean sweep last month that this competition was still a lot closer than they were pretending it was. Even if Ginsung still has a shot within the Loser’s Bracket the defeat still stung ever so slightly.

And a lot of their concerns they had about this match were the same that they had about the last one too.

Biography: Name any conflict in recent memory, and Asan was probably there at some point. Underdark raids? Yes, anti-pirate actions? Obviously, that punch up outside the local kebab shop which resulted in a couple of people needing medical attention? He didn't actually start that one but he certainly ended it. He runs into conflict so often it's often thought to be on purpose.

“We’re having a lot of trouble with aasimar fighters it feels like.” Noted Grugtik checking out the sheet up close. “I’m confident in our girl’s abilities but after last week…”
“Do not sweat it big man.” Skaugran cooed reassuringly, passing a flask of something over to his friend. “The stats don’t tell the whole story, if you trust me with anything then trust me when I say I’ve given her the best training for this I can give.”
The combination of liquor and encouragement did seem to perk up Grugtik, Winston interjected to help. “We’ve done all that we can do as a team, the best we can do now is hope for the best and prepare for the worst if it comes to it. It should be about time we made our appearance yes?”

Match 2

Oshyn Kingfisher of Clan Teeny Kobolds Vs Asan of Clan Black Sabor

The round started with both fighters taking their time and feeling out the situation slowly. They knew how this kind of match would play out for them both, it was going to come down to for the most part on who got the first good grab. Asan moved first, when Oshyn got a little too close her threw out a quick hook to her side and dived in for the takedown. The fight continued on the ground with Oshyn on her back as they fought for dominance, both sides tried their respective holds to choke their opponent’s out. At least that is what it looked like but Oshyn had other plans, with one of her free legs she pushed it against Asan giving her the leverage she needed to slide out the right side with her hips. Suddenly she had her legs sandwiched around Asan, she forced his face into the ground, grabbed for his right foot and held onto it hard as she tried to twist and torque it back towards his thigh. But with his other spare foot before she could, Asan took his toe and jabbed it right into her eye, breaking the lock but costing him a point from the Guide.

The situation was reset once again as the guide separated them and brought them back to the middle. Once again, Asan is the first to move, and once again they end up back into the grapple, arms under Oshyn’s throat he tries to lock her into a guillotine choke but Oshyn will not have it, he resorts to from that position when he drops the hold from her neck to around her midsection to throw her to the mat but as she falls she grabs onto Asan’s leg and takes him back to the floor with her, now she has his leg in between hers and she rolls over for the kneebar. Asan immediately hooks the leg being held into his free leg to prevent the kneebar, but he still has to get off the floor, he tries slipping his way out multiple times but Oshyn won’t let him go that easily kicking his leg out and keeping him down, he tries to pry and kick his leg out but when she loses the kneebar she takes a hold of his foot once again and curls it back in for the toe hold. Asan stalled for just enough time however, one last shot to the head that she couldn't fend away and the round stopped. The judges deliberate the result and it is close, endless reflection scores it as a 9-9 round in Asan’s favour but with a point lost for his earlier foul. Aramil and Gurgorrhim however, they score the round in Oshyn’s favour, a 10 - 8 lead has been established.

Round two began with both sides immediately swinging in with their finishers, Asan’s Hook caught a blow across Oshyn’s cheek but as he threw it Oshyn dived forward and pushed him over onto his back. Suddenly with his legs in the air, Oshyn put her legs around the right leg she had been working all match, and in one smooth motion dropped to the ground and tried to kneebar her opponent into her submission. He was quick enough on the uptake to lock his legs into position before she could complete the submission hold, but she was not letting go even when he managed to lever his leg after 2 minutes of this she was back on top of him before he could get off and locking in around his arm instead. Swinging his arm back and forth to prevent the Americana from being locked in he managed to kick himself out, not hard enough to do damage but enough to get distance.

From there the fight got physical, Oshyn lashed out with a spinning back first that caught Asan across the jaw but he swing back with his own Hook, she leaned away enough to avoid the KO but as he stepped in swinging around and back with his fist extended smashing her across the jaw with a hit that sent her sprawling. He got the mount and began to throw punches for all he was worth but Oshyn was experienced with fighting from the guard position, fending his blows and pressing him away from getting any grapple attempts. It wasn’t until just very near the end of the world that he finally got a hammer blow on the nose right before the bell rang. The judges deliberated, this time there was a clear favourite in this round as all three judges voted 10 - 9 in favour of Oshyn Kingfisher.

The match from this point was secure for Oshyn if she could make it to the end of the third round, if being the key word. The bell rang Oshyn took a step back as Asan rushed forward and stomped down on his foot, but he followed through with his ducking uppercut and smashed her across the jaw, knocking loose her mouthguard in the process, and an elbow to the body that doubled her over. Asan closed in trying to get a hold of a leg but as he came close Oshyn grabbed a hold of his arm and pulled them both to the ground into the guard position, and hooked her arms in around his throat for the Peruvian Necktie attempt.

Asan however rolling and shifting his way around them, broke the posture of the Necktie just enough to grab hold of her arm and with a lot of effort pry himself out. The two fighters rolled back up and around when suddenly Oshyn went for the Kneebar, and only got so far until Asan finally after fighting in the backfoot for the past few minutes landed a heavy hook to Oshyn’s head that sent her reeling. He got the mount on her and starting pummeling like the match depended on it, a backfist to her jaw opened her guard but when he went for the second big hook she blocked it, when she tried to fight her way out with a few guarded blows of her own he slammed in with a heavy haymaker and then, in the midst of that scuffle Oshyn reached up and grabbed his hair inadvertently while trying to improve her position and, without entirely thinking Asan mashed his head into her face. A headbutt, an illegal headbutt, right as the round ended in his favour. And that is what cost him.

The judges came to their decision very quickly, the round was heavily in favour of Asanit was very obvious, but that last second foul sealed the deal, 9-9 a round that was in no one's favour. Meaning that at the end of the match.

Round 1 - 10 - 8 (40 – 41, Judges 1 and 2 in favour of Oshyn, -1 point from Asan due to a foul)
Round 2 – 10 – 9 (44 – 38)
Round 3 – 9 – 9 (41 – 57, -1 point from Asan due to a foul)

Week 5, West Ponente Qualifier Round 2, Zaid Botanical Gardens

The botanical gardens were originally nothing more than a small few plots tended by the mildly eccentric nobleman Emir Zaid, they had some beautiful flowers yes, very nicely arranged of course but it was just a nobleman’s garden for the most part. It wasn’t until said Zaid, who at this point hadn’t earned his moniker of ‘The Greenthumb’, started experimenting with ways to preserve a local mountain flower that wilted at low altitudes that he really began his lifelong work into the study of Botany and built the gardens that stand to this day.

A great abundance of those mountain flowers were planted alongside other specimens of flowers that grow at high altitude, the dome that houses them is next to the enclosure that houses the natural ‘cage’ for the event itself, aside from the ‘predatory plant’ enclosure that is only opened to the public at specific times and only with a guide present, the mountain enclosure if one of the most popular attractions of the gardens. Indeed some of those mountain creepers have found themselves woven around the cage itself this evening as the last fights of the month commence.

Month 4 Week 1, North-West Mistral Qualifier Round 2, The Spice Market

‘Why the Spice Market in particular?’ Some locals have asked. The cattle market is arguably larger, the fish market is more easily accessible, there’s a lot of locations that may have provided more space and access to the event but the House chose what is essentially the most densely packed and busy market of them all for their big fight event. And therein lies the answer, it’s packed at all hours, it’s very likely many of the people there have a lot of money, and it’s right in the heart of the city where a lot of people frequent on a day to day basis. As an unspoken aside to that answer, the spice market has a more pleasant ‘fragrance’ than the cattle or fish markets.

Before the events of the evening got started, a small official announcement had to be made concerning the results of the last match of the previous month, Crisbis Pralkac vs Weaken. As both of these fighters were of the same clan, and it was the actions of Crisbis that caused the draw in the first place it was to be decided by that most tried and true method of conflict resolution, a coin flip. Ankath Raivys, the Master of Clan Thunder Hawk did the honours, she flipped the coin high into the air, caught it on the back of her hand and waited a few moments before announcing the result to Poppy and the crowd.

Crisbis Pralkac advances to the next round.

And with that matter decided the fights of the night commenced in earnest.

Meanwhile in the war room the mood was even more tense than it usually was in light of the first match of the Heavyweight division.

“I cannot express enough how important it is that we do not lose here.” Grugtik declared, both hands planted on the table as he spoke to the assembled group of Winston, Skaugran and Mardor, the former two staying very silent as to not get in the way of their friend’s rant. “Losing to other clans, that’s one thing, close matches that’s another thing too, but I am not getting shown up by my bloody rival tonight, not here not now, and not ever, am I clear?

This last word was projected at Mardor, who sort of blinked whilst tilting his head and asked. “Did ya make some sorta money bet with him?”
“No I-”
“Does he even know you’re competing with him? And I don’t mean like in your name is in the cards opposite him sense, I mean in like the actively pursuing a competition versus him sense.”

Grugtik opened his mouth, then closed his mouth, and then opened his mouth before closing it again and rather sinking back into his chair, slightly embarrassed. “No, I’ve been rather taking every chance to avoid the bugger, not gonna lie. We didn’t exactly part on good terms, being that one of us lost their job in the arrangement.”

But he sprang back to his feet suddenly and continued “That’s beside the point however! He’s got at least two of his lads in this Winner’s Bracket and if we take one of them out now and hopefully the other one gets knocked out too, then he’s only gonna have one guy in the Winner’s Bracket. So Mardor, I need you to whoop Mr Lutgher’s arse six ways to sunday and back again.”

Mardor leaned back in his seat and grinned a toothy grin and chortled. “Brah you didn’t even need to ask, that’s what you pay me for right?”

Match 1

Mardor Danxic of Clan Teeny Kobolds Vs Fayyaad Lutgher of Clan Dread Wyrm

Before the fight had even begun the crowd was expecting something special from these two fighters known for their high intensity fighting styles, and they delivered. The bell rang, and before the tone had even faded they were across the ring throwing their first attacks, Mardor mashed a fist into Fayyaad’s side but caught a heavy blow across the jaw in turn, but grabbed on tight before he the Human could pull back and yanked them both to the floor. Rolling back and forth for position Fayyaad manages to break the hold before kicking out Mardor’s leg when he tries to break away and pulls him back down to the ground. Mardor catches him across the mouth with the back of his fist splitting his lip open, but the fight continues with them grappling on the floor and jockeying for position.

Eventually it’s Mardor that finds it as he slips his legs around Fayyaad’s torso and attempt to wrench his arm back in the armbar, Mardor manages to break his attempt to lock his arms back but it allows him to run his way across the floor and out of the hold. Loosened from the hold Fayyaad tries to reclaim his position of dominance but catches an uppercut to the jaw from the grounded Mardor and uses it to get himself off the floor. The fighters didn’t stay upright for long however, a slight misjudgement from Mardor caused him to take a flying knee to the chest that opened him right up to a massive whalloping uppercut from Fayyaad. Mardor zoned out for a moment, but the training he had spent the week doing with Skaugran and Traubon let him remain conscious, grabbing hold of Fayyaad as he fell back pulling him in and bringing the fight to the floor. Fayyaad levers himself way enough to get a little wiggle room as Mardor locks his arms in place around his head angling for the Triangle Choke, the human starts to drop knees into Mardor’s stomach to try and get him to break the grip but Mardor’s core let's take a lot of those shots, before he finally during an attempt to Fayyaad to break free rolls him around and shoves him right up against the cage, holding him hard against it until the end of the round. The round is extremely close with merely one point in difference for both fighters, but there’s some debate on who has that edge. Aramil Horinenth and Myria Underfoot in the end score it as Mardor’s advantage over Ander Cherrycheeks deciding in Fayyaad’s favour, scoring it 10-9 for the Dragonborn.

Round two, Mardor can’t take a step before catched a heel to the bridge of his snout from a devastating Axe Kick from Fayyaad, before kicking out his legs and bringing him down to the ground again. But fighting a mer-wrestler on the mount is risky business, no sooner does he get into position than a sudden knee to the side from Mardor turns the table, locking his legs around the arm and slipping out the mount. Fayyaad lands a heavy jab to Mardor’s face, who responds by picking him up bodily and shoving him up against the cage to try and limit his blows. The two fighters trade blows from that position hooks and uppercuts coming out and finding their marks but neither side can get ahead over their opponent, and it takes a hard knee to the stomach before Mardor decides to try another tact, hooking Fayyaad’s remaining standing leg and bringing back down to the mat near the edge of the cage.

But Fayyaad rolled on contact with the ground before Mardor could land on top of him and before he could get up and guard, Fayyaad came back and kicked him square in the jaw. Mardor got up grabbing onto Fayyaad and pulling himself up, but the human hooked his arms around Mardor’s knees and pulled him back down, he’s not getting the mount on this one. The two fighters position, transition and reposition for dominance next the the cage, Mardor holds Fayyaad to try and get hooks in for a kneebar, but Fayyaad is holding him down and throwing the left and right hooks for all he’s worth, with Mardor only being able to land a few strikes back in response with Fayyaad working to get his arms in and around his neck until he was saved by the bell moments before he completed the Necktie. The judges this time scored the round entirely in Fayyaad Lutgher’s favour making them neck and neck in the match.

Round three started with a bang, it was the sound of Fayyaad striking first with another uppercut to Mardor’s jaw, but Mardor held him down to prevent him from getting away and took him down to the floor. On the way down Fayyaad’s head hit against one of the supporting posts, unintentionally by Mardor’s hand but suddenly being stunned on the floor versus a grappler that was on top of you was a bad place to be. One arm slid in under the back of Fayyaad’s neck and grasped Fayyaad’s left arm pushing it up against his own neck and Mardor swung himself off and squeeze. Fayyaad quickly stuck his free arm under his other to try and keep his air passage free, his beard helped cushion the choke but he couldn’t get off the floor. He kicked out at Mardor’s side but he held on tight, moving with Fayyaad’s attempt to break the hold. He slid his spare arm out to smash the Dragonborn across the jowls but he continued to hold on, he even threw another one of his signature uppercuts but the angle was wrong, he couldn’t get it to hit hard whilst he was being held down by the Mardor.

Mardor transitioned to behind him at this point, sliding his arm from behind Fayyaad’s neck to in front of it and attempting to still put pressure on that airway, but then Fayyaad somehow found the leverage he needed to break that hold just enough to give him space, and get the hell away from Mardor. The fight reset, but Fayyaad was gasping and Mardor was coming in hot. Fayyaad lashed out a foot and caught Mardor across the face but he just kept going in, scooping up the helpfully provided leg and bodily carrying the human all the way to the opposite side of the cage and with a shoulder in place slamming him hard into the fence. He started to wrench the leg up, Fayyaad threw another blow it hammered into Mardor, he was taking a lot of these blows head on but he refused to let go of Fayyaad now that he was in control. He kicked out his remaining standing leg so he had no leverage on the floor and with that just ramming him hard against the fence. Fayyaad couldn’t break the hold, all he could do was cushion the impacts as Mardor just kept ramming him against the fence, throwing hits at everything he could reach until suddenly the bell rang, and wordlessly Mardor just let Fayyaad drop to the mat and walked away. The judges didn’t take long to decide the winner of that bout, because it seemed pretty obvious who had the advantage from minute one of the round.

All three judges scored the match 10-9 for Mardor Danxic.

Round 1 – 10 – 9 (49 – 50, Judges 1 and 2 in favour of Mardor)

Events Phase: A Few Notable Revivals

An official announcement was released by Poppy Merribuck before the commencement of final stage of the Maelstrom Qualifiers

“Once again I cannot thank everyone enough for the progress of this flagship tournament so far, for the upsets, knockouts, submissions and high intensity bouts that we have witnessed, for the assistance from the Guides and Staff under our roster and the clan managers who made this all possible. I have two matters that I wish to discuss.”

“Firstly, The Grand Copher Arena is nearing the end of its restoration. The additional assistance from interested parties that had been generated as a result of the House of Spirit’s revival has allowed us to accelerate the timetable for when we can reopen it, and it will be ready for use just in time for the Loser’s Bracket Finals this month. One hundred and ninety-two fighters had entered this tournament and by the time we are through we will have half of that amount left, which brings me to the second item I wish to announce.

Starting from the next month we have finished the applications for and organising of additional events, to accommodate for those fighters who have either been eliminated now or will be eliminated in the following matches this month. For the Heavyweight division these are as follows.

Ghassen’s Gauntlet funded by Commander Durga in cooperation with the Royal Copher Marine Corps. A Round Robin style tournament accepting at least 6 fighters to take part, the winner of the most bouts after the 6 weeks of matches will receive a cash prize and by my blessing the right to challenge the current holder of the Heavyweight Title belt. Whoever that may be by the time this tournament ends.

The Summer Shield Strike, yes it’s back! For those who are new to the House of Spirits, the Shield Strike was a special bi-annual event held by the house to foister fair play and cooperation between the various clans under our banner, by having them face off in a five on five team elimination tournament. For the clans that cannot field 5 fighters by themselves do not worry, it is perfectly acceptable to form teams with other clans to compete in this competition. The Shield Strike will be our largest open registration with 20 slots available.

Finally with the approval of the various sponsors under our banner we are moving to restart the monthly One-Night Slam tournaments. Traditionally these are small one night single elimination tournaments held by the House and funded by the various sponsors under our banner for the less experienced fighters on the roster which right now is most of you. The sponsor of this Slam will be the Enhance Ability gym equipment company, who in addition to the cash prize will be providing state of the art training equipment for the winner if they succeed.

She would go on to list the events available for the Middleweight and Featherweight divisions but for the purposes of this game they don’t need to exist, yet.

Events Phase:Scouting Report!

S: “Got a couple of candidates for you here boss as requested, which one would you like to go for?”

1. Recruit a new fighter

A. Bonndora Broadchin
Manager: Shepherd of the House
Heavyweight (Mountain Dwarf)
Striker: Aehamar/Laikat
Record: 0-0-0, 0 DQ
Workrate: Low
Health: Good
Offense: 144
Defense: 85
Finishing: Bronze
Chin: Silver
Heart: Bronze
Tenure: 0 years
Career Strength: 10
Signature: Ducking Hook to Body (0)
Experience: 25 (25 available)
Biography: Bonndora was sent away to a convent of Moradin by her parents at an early age due to her unruly and fiery temperament in the hopes that she would learn some restraint and discipline, instead she learned how to channel her anger into a fine point, specifically her opponent's jaw at the tip of her elbow. She at least became an ordained cleric of Moradin however.

B. Ssahshu
Manager: Shepherd of the House
Heavyweight (Yuanti)
Grappling: Akor-rin/Jarghalaur
Record: 0-0-0, 0 DQ
Workrate: High
Health: Poor
Offense: 141
Defense: 120
Finishing: Bronze
Chin: Bronze
Heart: Silver
Tenure: 0 years
Career Strength: 10
Signature: Americana (0)
Experience: 13 (13 available)
Biography: Nicknamed 'The Tsuchinoko' somewhat derogatorily due to his slightly squat and pudgy stature for a yuanti, Ssahshu decided to lean into it and has made it part of his brand. This makes the feeling of getting run rings around them by a pudgy snake-man and getting choked out even worse for his opponents.

C. Ave
Manager: Shepherd of the House
Heavyweight (Aasimar)
Striker: Khaanukh/Laikat
Record: 0-0-0, 0 DQ
Workrate: Low
Health: Average
Offense: 142
Defense: 115
Finishing: Bronze
Chin: Silver
Heart: Bronze
Tenure: 0 years
Career Strength: 10
Signature: Kick to Body (0)
Experience: 10 (10 available)
Biography: Rumoured to be the daughter of Tempus the Lord of Battles, Ave seems to be the polar opposite of her thunderous father with her calm and serene attitude. Even when she is viciously thrashing her opponents her calm expression never changes one iota, which somehow is even more unnerving.

S: “We have one free fighter right now (And potentially two later depending on how Ginsung’s match shakes out), the tournaments start next month but it doesn’t hurt to register early”

2) “With that in mind, any of these you want to enter us into?”

A. Ghassen’s Gauntlet - Min 6+ (1 fighter only per clan), Round Robin Tournament, 6 Weeks

A small competition sponsored by an affluent general, the fighters in the Gauntlet will face every other opponent at least once in a Round Robin format with the final winner being the fighter who wins the most bouts. A very involved event time wise, but the House has also added the promise of a title bout challenge to the winner.

B. House of Spirits: Summer Shield Strike - Limit 20, Team Elimination Tournament, 3 Weeks

A revival of a popular bi-yearly event, in which four teams of five fighters each face off against each other in a single elimination tournament. One fighter of each team will enter the arena and fight, the winning team’s fighter stays in the ring and the losing team sends in their next fighter, until all the fighters of one team have been eliminated. A fairly prestigious event that could improve your relationship with another clan.

C. ‘Enhance Ability’ One-Night Slam - Limit 8 (1 fighter only per clan), Single Elimination, 1 Week

A small monthly tournament held by the house sponsored by one of the various companies that advertise in the matches. This tournament’s sponsor is the ‘Enhance Ability’ exercise equipment company, for all your fitness and wellbeing needs. In addition to the cash prize the winner will also receive some free training equipment for their Clan.

"Today I will cause problems on purpose"
Hey this thread isn’t dead! First of all I would like to sincerely apologise for taking far too long on this, I had time slip away from me, and then I slipped away a bit more, and then I ended up with being busy on the days I was prepared to write due to things we planned on doing on this end falling on that time, and unmotivated to write on the days I was free because I wanted that rest and now the update was over two weeks late as a result.

So for the sake of keeping things moving, regrettably, I have had to cut the fight description out as they tend to take up the most time and there were over five fights this update. I would have preferred not to, especially because this month had some primo bangers in the works but the game has stalled and I want it to keep going. Next update will be business as usual now that things have quieted down and I promise it will be better.

On that note, on with this month.

Fight Phase, START!

Week 2, North Tramontane and North-East Gregale Winner's Finals, Azure Plaza

Of all parts of the city of Copher, one of the oldest segments of the great trade city (At least if you don’t count ones that were burnt down and had to be rebuilt) that is mostly still in tact is the Noble Quarter, where as per the namesake, most of the aristocracy and merchant princes reside in their old stately homes right at the seat of power. One of the most frequented areas in this place is the Azure Plaza, a marbled and bedecked stage speckled with lapis lazuli and thin streaks of silver made in commemoration of an old Shah’s first wife for their 50th anniversary.

Today the area has been prepared for a performance put on for the amusement of the nobles, but perhaps none quite like they are going to witness here, not since a good few centuries ago at least. The gilded cage raised above the stadium on winches had been checked, rechecked and double checked, the stands properly set up and pillowed and the (relatively) cheap seats prepared for those who didn’t live in the area and their tickets. As the first exclusive events to take place in this arena Poppy wanted exactly zero problems from tonight.

The Judges presiding over this event are :niggly:Orryn Silverthread, :mil101:Chrola, and :jebstare:Shulali

--

A lone carriage trundled down the sunlit boulevard of the Noble Quarter heading towards the Azure Plaza and within it was the Clan Teeny Kobold management team, dressed in the closest approximation of finery they could get for an event held amongst the upper classes. Compared to the luggage cart that had brought them to Copher in the first place it was a much nicer method of transport, it actually had seats for one and they were cushioned! And they had actual windows instead of second hand tarp that let the wind in.

“It was very generous of the Emir to provide us his carriage for this event.” Winston commented, adjusting the collar on his outfit, a traditional Copher Thawb. “Though I don’t know where he got some of these Goblin sized Thawbs from.

“Well~ I asked nicely and managed to get a good deal on them.” Lied Grugtik, who had in fact asked if they had any hand-me-downs in about human child size, and they just so happened to have two that were just about the right size and shape. “Have you heard back from Skaugran yet?”

“I received the missive just before we left Grugtik, Traubon Steelfist is as ready as he can possibly be for his big bout, he’s done everything he said he can do so it’s all in Traubon’s hands now. I also got the stuff back from him in the meantime.” From behind him in his carrying case he produced three simple folders, picking one at random he opened it up.

Biography: Lordorim was the blue blooded layabout son of a powerful noble, who prefered trawling the ale houses with his gang of cronies than putting effort into his studies, and was prone to extended bouts of langour. Engaging in the House of Spirits as a professional fighter was just the latest thing he decided to try out on a whim.

Biography: Dhamor Scalesplitter comes from a long line of famous dragon hunters, a proud lineage that stretches back for generations of great warriors. What he doesn't mention is that no actual dragon slaying has taken place for at least 3 of those previous generations, attempts have been made but not have succeeded. He's not too bothered about the slaying business in any case.

“Is dragon-slaying even a thing people do these days?”

“Not necessarily. I think a lot of the stereotypical ‘evil’ dragons that you used to see died out through changes in their natural environment and the great excess of adventuring parties that came to slay them. To my knowledge, they are either smart enough to avoid attention or engage in less overt forms of evil, like market manipulation. And last folder here, it’s mildly important for sure.”

“A complete and utter blowhard then. What do you reckon Winston? 3 Months of fights should be enough for an educated guess right?” Grugtik queried.

Winston had admittedly been picking a few things up during his stay in Copher as the Teeny Kobold Accountant, but guessing the outcome of a fight wasn’t one of them. “I mean… He got to the winners final of his qualifiers yes? He must be doing something right, surely?”

“Well only one way to find out, our bout is the last match of the night, so we have plenty of time to just chill and watch the other bouts happen.”

Week 3, East Levante and South-East Sirocco Winner's Finals, The Sirocco

Sitting within the Copher Merchant Navy Docks, in a drydock reserved for this ship and this ship alone, a ship that has no equal amongst the seven seas stands The Sirocco, pride of the Copher Navy. It’s construction was the collaborative effort of the best shipwrights, dwarven craftsmen and gnomish artificers the world had ever known built as the fancy of Grand Admiral to make a ship that could replace the Tidebreaker as the flagship of Copher after that ship had been wrecked along the Brokekeel Coast.

The deck of the ship of course had space enough for the ring and several stands, cordoned off areas for the various clans that had a stake in today’s events and of course, the many, many guards present beyond the norm for an event like this is still taking place on military property. In bars around the docks off-duty sailors and marines cluster in smoke filled rooms, eyes fixed on the projection screens provided by the House to those around the venue itself, betting books are already being brought out in bars across the city as the second batch of Winners Finals begins.

Week 4, South Ostro and South-West Libeccio Winner's Finals, Azure Plaza

When the nobility first arrived at the Azure Plaza to witness the first Winners Finals it was more out of idle interest more than anything, after all events get held at the Plaza all the time some of them rather quaint, some of them forgettable, and on a otherwise fairly uneventful saturday evening what is a bored noble to do but make his way down to the Plaza and see what event is happening this week. Not this week though, because whatever they took away from that first showing they wanted more.

The stands are even more packed this week with the nobility and their entourages, so much so that the house has had to build additional seating to accommodate them. Words of potential additional sponsorships from powerful merchants have been coming in thick and fast to the House as they see the house itself as a great mercantile opportunity to advertise their business (And very maybe possibly, see any fighters sponsored by rival houses get humiliated in front of their peers). Whether this would be for good or for ill no one can say for sure but what it is right now is lucrative.

Week 5, West Ponente and North-West Mistral Winner's Finals, The Sirocco

Before The Sirocco was built a lot of the development process was spent figuring out two matters, how much weight could a ship made from steel support, and what could be used to propel it across the water. The second one is a state secret closely guarded by Copher and the craftsmen who built it, but the first one was the subject of a great deal of scholarly experiment and discussion amongst the engineers that built it, building incrementally bigger and bigger test models until finally they managed to float a larger scale version out on the water for the first time. And it immediately sank. This was just one of the many hurdles that happened during the construction of the Sirocco.

The air is electric on the boat itself today, and we don’t just mean because of the recent thunderstorms in the area, as the last week of qualifiers approaches everyone was abuzz in discussions about who the top 8 would be, who are the big names, the big shouts, Who is the most likely candidate to win? And at this stage everyone seems to have a fair chuck at it, it’s all down, with the Maelstrom tournament approaching in a month’s time it may just come down to the margins

Hell yeah Mardor. Hang ten, bruh

Let Skaugrim Handle it

I think we should get one more fighter to round us out a bit. That should be a good stopping point until we save up to buy the mansion. As such, lets watch Bonndora & Ave as the one-night slam and try to hire the better of the two.

Fight Phase, START!

Week 1, Maelstrom Loser’s Bracket Semi-Finals, Grand Copher Arena

When the Grand Copher arena was last filled it was still a work in progress in a lot of places, where behind the fanfare, awnings and pomp was a lot of scaffolding, cordoned off areas and little bits of the arena that had to be built from scratch rather than restored for the modern environment. It looked pretty enough for an event that wouldn’t see the stadium rammed but wasn’t prepared for the massive crowds that would be expected from the larger events. These times have since passed.

The buzz surrounding the sport in these past four months has ballooned the fanbase within Copher from a niche group of hobbyists who were following the sport in Goresbergh, to a steadily rising fanbase as the sport slowly got back to its feet and started running again. For this first night of operation tickets were cut in price to fill those stands, Poppy wanted those stadiums packed for the penultimate week of fights in the Maelstrom Qualifier, the last few remaining holdouts in the tournament after the dust from the Winner’s Finals had cleared to decide to further narrow down who the best 16 fighters of this new generation could be. And for some in this competition, they had a lot more stake than others.

The Judges presiding over this event are, :jebstare:Shulali, :mil101:Chrola, and :banjo:Myria Underfoot.

In almost every underdog sports story on the market there always comes a point where the underdog team suffers a big loss, whether it’s a literal loss in whatever game is being played or some other big loss, the dramatic tension shoots up, the stakes get raised and it all hangs in the balance before triumph resumes.

But last minute miracles don’t tend to happen for a lot of underdogs in the real world and that is where Clan Teeny Kobolds has found themselves, an unfortunate position borne out of all but one of their own losing their winner’s finals matches, and now needing to climb their way back out. The one loss allowable by the Winner’s Bracket had been spent and from this point it was do or die.

“You’ve gone over what Ginsung needs to do in this match Skaugran?” Fretted Grugtik, he had been nervous about this particular match up for a while, after all of all the fighters under his stable that were in this situation, Ginsung had the furthest to climb.

“Yes, every time you told me to, ya gotta just chill out just a little about this.” Reassured Skaugran, patting his friend on the back. “Your fighters are good, the fact that they all got this far should be evidence enough that they’re good, but you seem to be the only one who isn’t convinced?”

Skaugran slid his canteen across to his friend and pointed out to the arena, where far below Winston was walking Ginsung out of the Blue Corner towards the arena. “Just sit back and watch.”

Week 2, Ghassen’s Gauntlet Round 1, Ghassen’s Fist

The sun rose over the towering edifice of the Ghassen’s Fist, the last fort before the wildlands beyond Copher and today was a slightly less than ordinary day for it’s garrison. An arena had been set up in the training yard and it had already gathered a small crowd, those soldiers who weren’t otherwise on patrol duty or any of the small maintenance chores had a front row seat to the event that was about to take place. This was not a regular event after all, the only way to view this match was through House sponsored projection channels because for the next 6 months the fighters in this fort would be going through a grueling training regime and a match every single month to prove once and for all who would be worthy for the new House of Spirit’s first ever title bout.

20 fighters had been assembled in the mustering yard, 7 from the middleweight and featherweight divisions, 6 from the heavyweight division, the tournament organiser was giving them the rundown of exactly what was going to be happening here. “From now until the end of the year, this is your home. You will eat here, you will sleep here, you will train here, and you will fight here, you will fight until one of you comes out on top. Only then will you have passed the Gauntlets, you may be rough around the edges at best, but we here at the Fist will forge you into the hardest flint. Prepare yourself for the long haul combatants, we’ll make you or we’ll break you one way or the other.”

Week 3, Enhance Ability’s One-Night Slam, The Undercity Pitstop

In the complete polar opposite of the boot camp happening miles away from the Undercity of Copher, the activity in the Undercity was building for their own little side tournament. Around the Undercity the various clocks, whistles and chimes had sounded to signal the end of the working day as the employees and employers both filed out of work, locked up tightly and headed over to the Pitstop for the evening’s entertainment, promising to be a quick series of bouts for developing Heavyweight talent, in a popular drinking spot on an otherwise uneventful afternoon.

Due to the nature of the event, the crowds aren’t as packed as they were the last time an event was held in the Undercity from people outside it, this was a place for first ever crop of new talent to come from the House Academy prospects alongside a lot of the fighters who had for one reason or another were struggling with their career prospects, and whilst that was of interest to some others preferred seeing big names on the cards. But the crowds are still there, the card is still packed and this one night tournament promised to be a good money maker for the Sponsor.

Week 4, House of Spirit Summer Shield Strike Round 1, The House of Serenity

It was early evening at the House of Serenity and the buzz of entertainment had reached even those secretive and solemn halls as the day began to wind down for its shadowy occupants. How and why the House of Serenity was picked as a location for MMA fights had been the subject for a lot of people in Copher, did Poppy approach the House or did the House approach Poppy? The common theory that gets a lot of grounds is that the House (of Serenity, not the House of Spirit), agreed to let the fights take place on these grounds on the condition that they are allowed to observe and install their own security at the venue. Hand to hand combat is part of the curriculum after all, and what better place to see it in action than an event all about it?

And this event promised to be an especially informative display of martial ability. The Shield Strike outside of the grand tournament or title bouts is one of the more popular events run by the house twice every year and the premise was very simple. Four teams of five fighters, sometimes all of one Clan but it was encouraged to form teams of two or even three or four clans together, would face off in a single elimination tournament over three weeks in a series of one on one fights that run for one night. Both sides pitch one fighter against the other in a single 3 round match, the loser is eliminated and the winner stays with the losing team sending in the next fighter until one team runs out of combatants. It isn’t run very often as an event because by it’s very design it is a grueling competition, a single MMA fight is an ordeal enough but for an experienced fighter it can run for multiple back to back matches at a time and that is where the true test of their stamina comes into play.

The Judges presiding over this event are, :wooper:Caspian, :geno:Wuni and :reject:Arnold Alder.

Week 5, Maelstrom Loser’s Bracket Finals, Grand Copher Arena

Five months ago, the Grand Copher arena threw its doors open for the first time in decades to host the largest display of martial prowess this side of Valhalla and from that arena 192 fighters stepped forth to answer that challenge. And now on the eve of the Maelstrom to decide the title belt holders for the first year of the new House of Spirits, those numbers have been shaved down to just a small chosen few. The decision to increase the number of participants in the final tournament from 8 to 16 had come down to a last minute decision admittedly, all to make it so the last 16 were truly the best of the best the tournament had to offer.

A lot of big names and favourites had been eliminated at one point or another in the winner’s bracket but now with just one more match in their way to victory, they have been given the last chance to qualify for the tournament. The stands are packed, fans for every fighter present were crowding the stadium, the traders outside the stadium and within are doing a roaring trade and Poppy Merribuck has made every precaution to ensure the night goes exactly as planned. Now it’s down to the fighters themselves.

The Judges presiding over this event are, :ironicat:Endless Reflection of the Musing Glades, :clint:Torbera Lutgher, and :zombie:Quarethon of Pyraxtallinost

"Today I will cause problems on purpose"
Hi everyone, you may have noticed from the large amount of time it took for this post to happen and the fact that it has not a lot of fight descriptions in it that this game is very possibly winding down.

Let's just say a lot of things on this end haven't been, great, to say the least. I ran into a lot of things that distracted, took time away or otherwise outright sapped my will to do much of anything, and I can't in good conscience keep this one going when I know my heart isn't in it to keep the updates consistent and the fights moving.

But more to the point, I kind of felt like people weren't overly interested? I greatly appreciate the posters who voted in the thread for their input, I am happy they liked what I was doing enough to keep coming back to it every time I dropped another update, but I couldn't help but feel like there were only a small handful of people who were posting when I updated, I didn't know if it was just maybe that the subject matter wasn't interesting to most or maybe they didn't care much for a mostly made up as I went along management sim? I know from my experience with Broken Gods CYOA Interlude people didn't care much for a "Choose A B C" style thing with no other input aside from it so I tried to avoid making that same kind of mistake with this one but still felt like I ran into the same issues.

So, I'd like to do a little better next.

What could have been better?
What did you like?
How might I make the experience better for people to participate in?

Thank you for your time everyone.

KAVODEL! KAVODEL!

I'm personally enjoying it, I'm not familiar with the background or mechanics so I'm all for letting others pick things mostly. Letting the NPC who specializes in something pick because idk what I'm doing.

I think doing the fights not in our stable really quick like this last one and only going in depth for our guys fights was my preference.

Its just a lot of crunchy numbers that we're not invested in as much as our guys.

I felt a lot more invested when I was running a stable in the previous game, the switch from individual to collective autonomy added significant distance.

The feedback I am getting is telling me collective autonomy for one stable was not as engaging as controlling your own guys so how about this.

Instead of controlling one stable, would you be interested in controlling one fighter each under one stable?

Answering all three of these at once I guess:

The big problem for me is that there were three different elements - the story, the managerial aspect of the game, and mechanically running the thing. I liked the mechanical and story aspects but these are sort of naturally the ones that take forever to do as opposed to the managerial stuff, which always felt the weakest. Giving the players more control gives more engagement and agency threadside, but if just running the thing is a herculean effort i'm not sure how much better that would be in the long run.
